We returned from Tulum April 8 (what's that now, 12 days ago?)
Last night, the boy developed high fever, aches, nausea and lots of other flu-like symptoms. His mama took him to the ER where they did tests -- and WE THINK HE HAS DENGUE FEVER. (dammit).
He got bitten quite a bit by mosquitos, both on the beach in the evening and probably inland at Coba and Punta Laguna. We weren't as good about mosquito reppellant as we should have been, obviously.
It's still possible that it's just the normal flu virus, but .... the incubation period for dengue is up to 14 days.
Remember, bring and WEAR reppellant!

Is there any sign that is different from the regular flu that other scan look out for?

Wow, I'm so sorry the boy is ill, and am praying he's just got a bad flu. My daughter was ill last month, threw up for days, fever, aches, the wole enchilada, so I know there is a bad bug out there, and she hasn't left the country, nor been bitten by any mosquitoes. Let's hope that is all it is. We too were bitten a few times along the beach and @ Casa Cenote while eating dinner, but we used Repel (a natural blend) while @ Coba. Best wishes, give the boy a big hug for me!

My doc gave me a Rx to take before our trip, for Malaria, but the side effects make me not want to take it. Now I have second thoughts! I figured I would just try to be good about using repellant with DEET.

Oh, scary!
I hope he's okay - we'll be using the heavy "back woods" DEET stuff while we're there. Mosquitos love me and I can't deal with 'em!

I have read about other recent cases of Dengue on other Riviera Maya boards and a report of two malaria cases. I will definitely be more careful about always using the bug spray on the next trip.

Last year after a hard but short duration of rain the Mosquitos came out of the jungle so thick we had to run to the car, when we got in, there were at least 30-40 on us and in the car when we opened the doors. We had 4-5 bites each before we could kill them all. That was the first thing to cross my mind was some disease from these creatures. Forget the Great whites, the Crocs, the Grisslys and the Black Mamba. Mosquito's are still the enemy #1. I wish the boy well and with no long term effects.

GOOD = DEET
I know all the 'save the earth' folks will have a problem with this but rubbing yourself with basil oil, Skin-So-Tasty, or cooking spray will not cut it. Unfortunately, good, old-fashioned chemicals are what's needed to keep the buggers away!!

Hi y'all -- Just popped in quickly to say that the boy is indeed doing better. He actually said he was hungry today, so all's good. (Then again, he's always hungry).
He gave me a nasty scare there, though, and I still haven't heard the results of the blood tests.
I'll let you know when I do.
Thanks for all the good wishes!!

Glad to hear he's doing better. We were fortunate with the winds in Tulum. My hubby got bit the day we left. Even though we had the repellent we only had to use it the day we went went to Coba.

What a scare, patmex!!
I don't know what I'd do if my kids got dengue. I am one of those "I'm not wearing DEET" kinda person - not after THIS!! It's DEET for the whole family all around!!

We had a good stiff sea breeze most of the week, but there were two nights I had a lot of buggers in my room. I sprayed my body, but don't like to spray my face (usually when I'm awake this isn't a problem). Ironically, it was also chilly those nights, so my body was wrapped in the sheet leaving my face unprotected.
I looked like a teenaged boy the next day, little red dots all over my forehead.
Guess next time I'll have to be more complete with my face. Guess I can spray it on my hands and wipe it onto my face and ears.

Happy happy happy news.
It was not dengue. But it was a high fever (high enough to cause a seizure) and awful flu like symptoms -- thus had us thinking dengue.
The boy bounced back within 3 days and is even back in school.
Kids, jeez, they bounce back fast.
Thanks for all the good wishes!!
And wear that repellant!

Patmex,
I'm glad that your boy is doing better, and doesn't have dengue. We were there at the same time and it sure had me thinking.

Phew! So glad he's better now, you must have been so scared! Thanks for giving us the update, as well as the reminder that dengue does exist down there and we need to be careful.

Glad to hear the official confirmation, patmex! As a reminder folks, dengue exists in the United States as well and there is no vaccine (we're probably a decade away from that). Be careful anytime you're out!!
