I remember when this was Gringo Daves and he had some cabanas for rent..don't think Nacho ever rented them out..or at least he didn't advertise it..but now that it's Mayan Grill...I see on the sign Beachreader has in a pic that cabanas are available once again. I remember them being pretty rustic..I am curious if they have been fancied up any..lol..and if anyone knows how much they rent for a night etc.

If it's the cabanas that are on the left as you enter, we did go inside one of them and they are very rustic. No bathrooms, no fans or lights that I could see, stick walls. Don't remember any clothing storage. But quite large beds (hard-looking, but I didn't sit on one), basically two full singles pushed together. The bathrooms are shared with the restaurant, but they're pretty nice I must say.

I might go for the one right in front, it has little sitting area outside, but I guess maybe that area is really for all of them.

No pics, sorry, and no idea how to book them.

Wait a minute, Nacho's used to be Gringo Dave's? Wow. I don't know why that surprises me, but Gringo Dave's was just sort of a mythical place I heard about many years ago and saw some pics and always wanted to go there. For some reason I thought it was farther north, more feet-in-the sand than Nacho's and with a swing bar? It was a long time ago, so who knows, but it's very cool they're the same place. Scratch Gringo Dave's off my list of life places to visit! :D

We went in one (that's if this is it).
Very rustic but I'd take it for sure!
The one we went in had stick walls with a thin see thru net on it.
Mosquito net too.
Did not get any inside pics though

Yep, those are the ones I'm thinking of. Really wish now I'd taken a pic, but the interior was so dark it wouldn't have come out well. Wonder if the front one is any different from the one we saw?

They look well kept, even if they are rustic. What I was told is that Nacho was Gringo Dave's chef. When Gringo Dave moved, (I am assuming to his now Puerto Aventuras location) that Nacho reopened. That's why the food is so good..it was always excellent at Gringo Dave's. :D

I haven't been to the PA location, it's on my list of things to do..lol!

I too didn't know that Nachos (name when we were there) was the legendary Gringo Daves, but those pictures tell the tale. We watched this kite surfer from our table at Nachos.

We also took a look inside those "huts" when we visited Nachos last May. That's right, we didn't take any pictures either. Perhaps the reason none of us took any pics is because they weren't really anything to look at?;)

We were staying at Copal last year, and Nachos huts made Copal's cabanas look like the Ritz. IMHO - I need an inside toilet, and these huts were too close together, and you'd get a lot of folks walking right past on their way to eat. I'll pass.

But its good to know that I too can scratch "Gringo Daves" off my list.

Now this next trip, I just need to make it up to Oscar y Lalo's.

Very cool, Gale. I didn't know that Mayan Grill aka Nacho's was once Gringo Daves. You learn something new everyday...since I've accomplished this at 8:45AM, I can now go back to bed! :D

By the way, Alfonzo (Nacho's brother) told me they not only have the stick hut places to the left (seemed like three or four units) but also have the second floor room over the restaurant. The places ran from $50 - $80 during low season.

Let me also say we took pictures of these huts but had to delete them because my memory card was full on the digital camera and we wanted a couple of shots of the beach. These were vaporized to make way for other images! Perhaps the Mayan Gods did not want us 'stealing the soul' of this special place?

Just got back and trying to readjust to the real life. I saw this post and had to tell you we had seen this place on our early morning walk. We were looking for Nacho's and walked right past this place. We went on up to Zazil Kin just to see it and walked back to the Mezzanine to have breakfast. As we were walking back to the Azulik we past Nacho's (Mayan Grill) I guess I should have checked both side of the sign. It did look like they had small extension cords stretched to these small cabanas, I don't know if this was used for lights or what..

I had a GREAT time!!! Tulum is all that you all said it would be and more. I wasn't as adventurous as some of you but I did make a big time of it. I will try a trip report later. That place is heaven on earth. Thanks to all for all of the advice.

I think they changed the name to Mayan Grill....and got a more diginifed sign cause of the clientele at Azul..marketing strategy..lol! What do you think Lee..your the resident ad professional..think they left one side as Nacho's so we could still find the place?:D

Y'all are too fun!!...

Anyway, I only ate at Nacho's at night and there were a few folks in the cabanas - with a bare lightbulb on. So yes, lights!! But still...very close together and a shared bath. I never did use the restroom there....maybe I didn't "drink" enough???? Good for a backpacker.
