Sadly I've waited almost a month to the day to work on this trip report and details already seem fuzzy, so I'm not sure how worthwhile my trip report is going to be to for anyone to read but I wanted to at least to get a some pictures up. Very few food pictures because my iPhone crashed during an update and I didn't back it up (DOH!), but I will be presenting you with a picture of what we consider to be the MOST AWESOME BEACH CHEESEBURGER EVER so stay tuned for that gem.
We arrived at noon in Cancun on October 12th and arrived to find no lines at immigration or customs. Traveling on a Wednesday is pretty great by the way. In standing with tradition our first move is to hit the duty free right by customs to purchase beverages for our stay and - miracle of miracles - they now carry my husbands favorite spirit Maker's Mark Bourbon. Joy cannot describe his reaction. I grabbed vodka for my bloody mary's and we were out the door.
This was our first Easyway rental having gone with American/Carribean/Cancun in the past but they have received so much good press on this board and LG over the past few months I decided to give them a try this time. I had email Jesus in advance asking for his best price for whatever vehicle he wanted to put us in with the only stipulation being "No Atos". We walk out the door of the airport, turned to the left where the rental car guys hang out, and immediately see the sign with my name on it. Perfection. After a 10 minute wait we are on our way to their offices. Jesus had responded to my request saying he could give me a Dodge Attitude for $366 for 10 days. Upon arrival he was sad to report that he was out of Attitudes but that he could put us in an a Jetta for the same price. No problem! No arrival beers were offered though - boo! Anyway, the car is just like I like them in Mexico ... non-descript, dented on every side, middling in mileage and not red. My only complaint with the car was it had paper tags taped to the window instead of a license plates. There have been reports of the Policia hassling rental cars with paper plates, so I protested a litte, but they insist it is not a problem and ultimately I just want to hit the road so off we go.
Absolutely no cars on the road on our drive down, almost eerie actually. We are heading to Tulum first for the first four days of our ten day trip. We've stayed in Akumal many times but this would be our first overnight visit to Tulum. We are booked for four nights at Nueva Vida de Ramiro in "Deseo" which is one of their "Corazon" suites. I've been reading reviews and trip reports for months, obsessing over this place and I really felt like I splurged on this place pricewise, so I'm excited to get there and see it.
We stop in Akumal on the way down to Tulum and had some cevich mixto and beers at Lol Ha before continuing down. First attempt at a picture:

Success! But oh dear, pretty blurry. Sorry! Akumal was looking lovely as always. So happy to be back here.

We chatted with the bartenders at Lol Ha and were sad to lear that Luis, our favorite Lol Ha bartender of all time, is no longer working there. Apparently he's working in Playa to cut down on his drive time. Big disapointment for my husband - Luis was always the first person he liked to see when we arrive. So we toasted to Luis' good health, finished another beer, and continue down to Tulum.
Arriving at NVR we momentarily roll forwards and backwards in the car trying to decide if we should check in at the main lobby or the Corazon "lobby". We park at the Corazon lobby but no one is there, so we hike through the jungle to their main lobby. Arriving at the main lobby there is someone there to check us in and shortly afterwards a man with a wheelbarrow arrives and loads our luggage (my apologies dude) and we are off to our cabana. It is around 3pm on Wednesday at this point. Sun is shining, beach is gorgeous, view from the cabana is everything I imagined.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/nvrbeach.jpg
I had contacted NVR in advance asking for one of the Tuluminfo coolers but it wasn't in the room. They went to go find it and we unpacked some. Plenty of shelf space in the bathroom for clothes which was nice. Also, looking around the cabana and I shocked to see that we have ... AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET! Wow, wasn't expecting that so I am pleasantly surprised. They returned shortly with a red cooler. Many of the reviews on TA mentioned being offered a welcome drinks upon arrival, but this was not to be the case for us. We are 0 for 2 on welcome drinks I think! So agreeing that an empty cooler wasn't much use, we head off to the San Francisco for a few supplies. Tomato juice and a "clamato" type juice for my bloody mary's, limes, cokes, bottled water (NVR provides you with one small bottle of water so you will want to buy more) white wine and ice ... just the basics. If I hadn't crashed my cell phone pics I would be providing you with a picture of our very awesome room bar set up here, but alas this is not to be. But it was very nice because some lovely Tuluminfo folks before us had left a small cutting board and knife for the limes in there, some glasses, some little battery powered tea lights, so we had quite the nice set up.

As evening approaches we are ready to head back out but first I have been dying to try the indoor/outdoor shower since I first saw it. :o Here comes my first shock of the trip ... no hot water. I don't mean that they are out of hot water at the moment. I mean that NVR does not have hot water. I feel like an idiot for not knowing this. How did I miss this on the gazillion different reviews I read? I knew there was no A/C and that we'd need to sleep with the doors open. I knew we would have limited electricity. I was prepared for the water from the shower to be salty. I just wasn't aware it was going to be cold. And with not much more than a dribble for water pressure. As I stand there watching the cold water trickle down, trying to decide how much I want to shower, my DH magically appears with a glass of white wine. Ah, saved again. And who needs a shower anyway. I'll just shower tomorrow, when the sun is out and it's warm, and I'll go easy on the shampoo ... and soap. All is well.
We head out to first dinner and I've chosen OM based on reviews on this board. We got a nice table and watched the sun finish setting and then a HUGE full moon rises up. It was a great setting. At night this place has a very cool vibe and the staff was very friendly.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/OM1.jpg
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/OM2.jpg
Since the waiter described the pizza as "for one" we both ordered our own. I ordered the Pizza Rustica and my DH ordered the Carne Carne. I also ordered a sangria, which was very good. When the pizzas came out they were bigger than I was expecting. We could have split one and ordered an appetizer mainly because "eco-chic" does not come with a frig for leftovers. We both enjoyed the Carne pizza. Mine was mostly just cheese so we take that one home to finish.
Back at the cabana we have a few cocktails on our deck and listen to the waves. There are two very comfy chairs on the balcony and also a hammock. Great evening but we are exhausted and ready for bed. We momentarily struggle with the mosquito netting over the bed ... apparently if it blocks mosquitos it's going to block the breeze also. So we find a way to tie up all the netting and then leave the French doors open on the patio.

Hooray Playakath!! You have started your trip report! Hip Hip Hooray! And what a great one it is!! I love your flow and especially appreciate all of the helpful information that you are able to weave in!
Do mind if I ask you questions or will it interrupt your rhythm? I will ask a couple here but please do not be timid about asking me to hold my questions until the end :)
You mentioned your regular stop a the duty free at the airport, are the prices and/or selection better then what you find elsewhere? Also have you seen any Cuban rums?
Thank you for mentioning the water pressure and lack of hot water! I was not aware of either. I am glad that I have the chance to get used to the idea before we get there.
It is extra fun for me to read your trip report because it sounds like we will be following in your footsteps (CUN, Easyway, NVR and then OM on the first night!). Thank you for posting your trip report. I can't wait to see what you do next!

Oh I don't mind if you ask questions at all. I can't continue my report or post photos until I get home tonight, so I'm in a holding pattern anyway. And I'm not exactly E. Hemmingway so there isn't much of a rhythm to interrupt. ;)
The duty free we went to is in Terminal 3 and is right by where you pick up your luggage. It is small but they have a good selection and the prices are very good IMO. I can't remember what my husband paid for the Makers' Mark but I remember him saying it was cheaper there than it was back here at home! My bottle of vodka was super cheap too. When we ran out, we did go to the Soriana in Puerto Adventuras and to the two small stores in Akumal later in the trip and we were very sad we didn't buy more at the duty free. Prices were higher and they didn't have what we wanted. And yes the duty free has Cuban rum. I'm no rum expert but I like Havana Club and since we can't buy it in the states I always buy it down there and it is pretty cheap as I recall. Others have suggested trying the Covi in Tulum Pueblo for alcohol but we did not make it over there.

We've been at Nueva plenty of times, and there IS hot water...you sometimes have to let it run a LOOOOOOOOONG time, but rest assured, it does come. They did recently get hit by lightening some possibly that may have played a role?

I'm not sure. There was a sign posted by the sink that said "No hot water". And at first I just assumed they were talking about the sink. Then when I tried the shower, I took it to mean the sign was referring to the whole cabana. I did eventually end up taking a couple of showers during our stay and I know I let the water run for a while first, plus during, and it never did warm up. But after reading that sign in the bathroom I just assumed the place had never had hot water. I apologize for the misinformation!

I thought the same thing too the first time we went, but it is just the sink in the bathroom. The outside shower though is cold water only, but the inside one does get hot, but there may have been an issue with the water heater, since the lightning strike.

Wow that is incredible!! NO hot water? As Tom said, maybe the pump was affected by the lightning strike in September, but you'd think it would be fixed by now. They certainly can't charge those prices without hot water, that's amazing. Did you get a really good deal? I mean, less than the website rates?
Playakath
11th November 2011, 01:44 PM
LOL, no absolutely not. I paid full price website price for our room and even low season rates were a splurge for us. Honestly I don't know what happened and we never talked to anyone at the hotel about it. I haven't gotten to this part of my report yet but we spent the rest of our time at NVR in the absolute driving wind and rain so just stopping by the office seemed like a total ordeal but maybe if we had things would have been different. Probably our own fault. It's kind of funny because I just assumed that not having any hot water was part of Tulum's "rustic charms"!

Sparkle - Duty free is pretty reasonable but so is covi in Tulum. But if you see it at Duty Free pick it up cuz Covi can have odd hours and be OUT of what you want for like the whole time you are there...trust me - been there done that!
Bottle of Absolute at DF was $16 US :p way cheaper than here in Michigan

We are up early the next morning to find that it is very overcast outside. Since the restaurant was under construction, they delivered breakfast to our room every morning. That coffee was always PIPING hot.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/DSCN0860.jpg
We had a routine of bloody mary’s every morning. I packed a bottle of “Demetri's Bloody Mary Seasoning". It's all the worcestershire sauce and spices that you would need to make the drink. All you need to add is tomato juice/vodka. I like bloody mary’s with half low salt V8 and half Clamato and we were able to find both at the San Francisco. Actually it was Clamato “look alike” that I found in the refrigerated section.
After breakfast and bloody mary’s I think I chilled out and read my Kindle in the hammock for a while and then we walked the beach towards La Zebra for lunch. Overcast and windy, but we sat outside.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/DSCN0856.jpg
My husband has proclaimed that he will be judging his own private Best Fish Taco Contest on this trip, so he kicks it off here. I just have their wonderful mojitos and guacamole. He gives the tacos thumbs up - they are grilled fish with a good sauce. Their mojitos have a stick of sugar cane in them and are really something special.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/DSCN0855.jpg
After lunch, my husband decides we need a second ice cooler, which they do not have at the San Francisco, so we drive up to Puerto Adventuras to check out the new Chedraui store there. It’s a pretty fancy Chedraui, ”nicer” than the one in Playa Del Carmen, but not as big. We used the ATM up front and got some pesos and found a Styrofoam cooler right away. This Chedraui seems very targeted to tourists - there were lots of brands from home (geez, they even had Tillamook cheese), lots of processed and frozen foods, and high prices all around, even on the brands we are used to buying in Mexico. They have a large wine selection, but a limited liquor selection. I prefer the San Francisco but we have our 2nd cooler and we head back to Tulum.
I guess because it was cloudy and windy that day, they did not put out the beach beds at NVR, just the chairs. In the late afternoon I used my float that I bought right before our trip and spent some time in the ocean. Waves were a little strong so I had to stay close to shore but the water was really warm. The float was very handy in Akumal. You could sit on it in the pool or for snorkeling you could lay on it. It was more comfortable than a snorkel vest. The rope is to attach to your wrist so it won't get away from you.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/float.jpg
That night we ended up having dinner at Zamas. I can’t even remember why we picked there. I think I just liked the look of it. They have a large covered patio area and lots of tables and you can see it from the road which helps. My husband ordered the fish tacos (again) and I just had some fries and wine. The fish tacos were just ok but the service was very good. Afterwards we stopped at The Sandbar just because the place was so cool looking and we had a few drinks. I would definitely come back to this place and they eagerly invited us to their BBQ beach party the next day but the weather prevented us from returning this trip. Wish I had a picture of it.
We came back to our room for cocktails on the balcony. After a while, the NVR security guard came and got us to tell us that there was going to be a baby turtle release on the beach. I was SO excited!! We went down to the beach and I got a chance to use my red “turtle flashlight” that I bought just for this trip! Someone had posted a link to this company on the LG website and I liked that it was rechargeable so I bought one.
http://www.turtlesafeonline.com/
My DH was skeptical that I would get ANY use out of it on our trip so this was my big chance! When we got out to the beach they showed us a bucket full of baby turtles all wiggling and struggling to get out. They even asked to borrow my red flashlight since I was the ONLY ONE WHO HAD ONE (HA)! There were about a dozen people there and we all lined up and they had us each take a turtle out the bucket and put them on the sand in front of us and we watched them struggle and scoot their way out to sea and swim off. I was so glad we got to do this and thanked the security guard profusely for coming to get us.
We slept again that night with our balcony doors open. I woke in the middle of the night to wind tunnel in our room … a storm had blown in and the wind was blowing the rain into our room. I had to close our balcony doors to keep the rain out.

So we tried to make the best of it. We had a laptop and movies so having that electrical outlet was a blessing. The wind constantly howled outside the cabana and caused the rain to come in sideways, blowing in around the balcony doors and leaving the floors wet. We asked for extra towels to stuff around the doors to keep the water out. Our one stroke of luck was that my husband, being the genius that he is, suggested bringing inside the two chairs on the balcony BEFORE it started raining. So we had comfortable chairs to sit in during our stay.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/Playakath/DSCN0904.jpg
We made bloody mary’s every morning and watched our movies until we had to get out for food. Food establishments were chosen based on their structural ability to keep out the rain. For example - El Bistro and Posada Margherita were not viable options … the rain came in sideways. And we never made it back to Sandbar. They just couldn’t keep the rain out and closed up early. We ate twice at Mateo’s one day. Despite not looking very water proof initially, it actually was quite a nice spot in the rain and being off the beach it was out of the wind which made a big difference. Here I had the beef burrito and my husband had the fish tacos and both were excellent. The fish tacos were battered and won the “Best Fish Tacos” of the trip award. The margaritas were very sour here though, I couldn’t finish mine. The people here were very friendly so we asked about dinner. They encouraged us to come back because they were serving big prawns on shish kabobs with grilled veggies. That sounded great to us and since they were able to keep most of their tables dry we came back for dinner there and it was very good again. We loved Mateo's.
We stopped the next day at El Tabano because I had read such good things about it. I could tell it would be a lovely spot in nice weather but in the driving rain and wind I was overwhelmed by their hard to decipher chalkboard menu and high-ish prices and so we ended up leaving without eating. Instead we back to Zamas because we knew their covered patio was large enough to keep us dry. It was here that I had the world’s best beach cheeseburger. I really don’t eat much meat at home, but for some reason I was craving a cheeseburger and as it turns out Zamas’ cheeseburger was no less than epic. If you like cheeseburgers, do not deny yourself one of these. We ended up coming back again from Akumal the next week because my husband had regretted not ordering the cheeseburgers on our first vist. So three meals at Zamas tied with a spot in Akumal pueblo for most returns visits on this trip.

Our last night we were in Tulum we wanted to have dinner at La Mezzanine. I wasn’t sure how well La Mezz would work in these weather conditions because they are up on a high bluff and I thought I remembered their restaurant being sort of open to the elements. It was raining so hard that it was difficult to see the road and with water all over you couldn’t always tell where the road was! But did any of that slow down the totally insane taxi drivers??? NO of course not!
We make it to La Mezz and I’m still wondering if they would even be open in this mess but before I could even open my door someone from the hotel ran out to our car with a giant umbrella and helped us into the restaurant. They were open of course and had glass doors they had shut to keep out the rain. The restaurant was cozy and comfy with the rain and wind safely outside and the staff is so friendly. It seems like they go out of their way to take care of you. I cannot gush enough about how much we like this place. It’s a Thai restaurant but they do have other items on the menu. I had red wine and my husband had a martini. It was kind of crazy because the bar is a stand alone hut out on the deck. So the waiters had to run out into the storm to get the drinks and then run back in carrying the drinks on trays! I was sure the drinks would be blown away or full of water by the time we got them, but they somehow managed to get them to us just fine. Whew! We split an order of spring rolls and he had pad thai for dinner and I had drunken noodles. The food was very good - our favorite meal of the trip. I wish I had some pictures because they serve the noodles very artfully … sort of in a tower and they had edible flowers on them. We had a few more drinks here and for as nice as it is, I find La Mezzanine prices are very reasonable in the context of Tulum beach restaurants. We left vowing to come back before the end of the trip.

Wow playakath, darn that rain!! How cool and clever that you had movies and brought those chairs into the room! We have never thought of that!
I have to chime in on the hot water thing, its too bad you didnt say something. Yes NVR gets a good penny for their rooms but amazing service does come with that! NVR staff has always been more than accomodating and I am certain they would have tried to remedy that situation for you! My hubby TyT commented that the no hot water was about the sink. And yes that applies to the outdoor shower.... But weird the indoor shower didnt.... I am not sure I buy the lightening strike theory because Chuck n Lainie stayed in that same room just days after that lightening strike and Im pretty sure they had hot water.
We loved Mateos and Zamas and Mezz also! Thanks for that cheeseburger pic... Its 8 am and Im starving now lol!!
I have a funny story in one of my trip reports about learning the spanish word for styrofoam cooler.... We were at san fan and didnt see any either. We tried asking but no one spoke english and now I have my eng/span dictionary out trying to look for styrofoam cooler. Of course it wasnt in there but with some very bad gesturing we finally communicated and they came out with one from the back somewhere. And for the record you can call it a Unicell (oon ee cell) or an hielero ( ee lehr o). :p

We actually bought a nice plastic one at the San Fran (for like $40) last year, but there were styro ones there too. One place to look for them is above the coolers in the refrigerated section on the north side of the store. I think that's where they kept the overstock. Glad to know you got that part solved at least.
I've only ever been to Mezzanine on beautiful days because the view is so amazing, glad to hear it's fun in the rain as well!

That was my biggest regret about the weather!

I upload them onto photobucket.com first and then you paste the link into the trip report. You have to chose the "img" link option ... it will make more sense if you upload one into photobucket. It only took me like 3 years to figure out how to do it!

Great to see you guys made good of the trip despite the rain. A rainy time in Tulum is still better than a cold time up north. We had a similar experience on the Pacific side on a previous trip and decided load up a cooler and spend a day on the beach in spite of all the rain (of course, it helped that the rain was warm and the beach was c/o anyway!)

OK I do have problems too ;)
Geez so frustrating. I did Photobucket...got the link then went here to add in "links" there is no "img" option?? just "url"
It adds the link but no wonderful photo like yours
Am I missing something which could be very possible with me!!!

LOL, I am at work and I can't get to photobucket right now. But once you upload the picture on photobucket, go to your album, go to the picture and on the right hand side there should be four "formats" to choose from. As I recall it was the last one - which I thought was an "img" one. You just click on that and it copies it.
Then come here and just paste that right in the middle of your trip report. Don't use any of the attachment icons at the top. Once you are here you don't need to do anything but just paste and then hit the preview button and the picture should come up.
That's how I got it to work anyway. I'm probably not explaining it well! But those icons up top have never worked for me.
