View Full Version : Its Never Too Late

Hopefully it is never too late for a trip report. This trip was last Oct-Nov and we came back and were immediately hit by winter/snow/work (we work in the ski industry) and never did a trip report. So we were looking at photos tonight and decided better late than never. We had booked a red eye, which we love because it gets into Cancun at 11:00AM. This had to be our fastest trip through immigration, customs and car rental. We were on the road within an hour. Car rental through Continental and then a quick stop at Soriana in Playa for beer, tequila, and some food. Next stop Casa de las Olas. Casa de las Olas is the last place before entering the biosphere, so it is private. Casa Chic (a large villa) which is part of Rancho San Eric is now right next door to the north, so not as private as before. CDLO is owned by Jimmy Greenfield, the owner of Carboncitos in Playa de Carmen. Great guy and a great host, he even cooked dinner for us one night.

Sorry for the double turtle photo.............not sure how to delete. The first afternoon/night we were there the turtle guys were checking the nest and there was one turtle that did not get out of his nest and did not head for the water. He was rescued and we turned him loose when the sun went down. Hopefully he made it. More to come.

I skiied my last day on July 4. Crazy year, Snowbird was open for 202 days. Through all those blizzards and early mornings I would be skiing down and thinking of Tulum. It kept me going through the winter and we can hardly wait to go this fall. We are definitely not going to miss another spring trip like we did this year.

A little about Casa de las Olas....there are three units upstairs (two of them are studios with a kitchen) and then a large main floor with two king size beds, a kitchen, a huge open area that opens on to a beautiful deck. CDLO would be great for a large family or a group of friends to book. Spread out in the upstairs for sleeping and then gather, cook, eat and hang out on the main level. If we ever stayed here again we would come up with the extra money and stay on the main floor. The upstairs rooms are really nice with a small kitchen in two of them.

Hola: Just stepping in here and adding to Todo Biens report. We will both be doing this back and forth until the trip report is finished. Hope you all enjoy!

I believe it is never too late.. We all should not ever give up. SO:.We did not think we would be going to Tulum this year, but due to the amazing amount of snow we got at Snowbird/work along with a big snowfall in May, I had a literal breakdown. I called Todo/Dave at work and said: I cannot take it! I need something to look forward to, and not weeding, and mowing and gardening...GET ME OUT OF HERE! So, the future Tulum trip started at that point with a planned trip in Oct. The story of last fall continues: We went to Ziggys and met Westy and now new hubby, along with Margo, Mindy in Tulum and Claudia de Playa...GREAT GREAT people..and also Guylene, the most amazing jewelry artist. Here are some pics of the food. Sorry, but we didn't get pictures of any of us there, and only a couple of food pics for you foodie's. It was a good time. Mindy's son was there and I have to say..that kid is living the good life.

Here is a pic of the famous coconut shrimp ( should have ordered 2 of these, yummmmmy)

http://i378.photobucket.com/albums/oo226/todobien1/Mexico%20Fall%202010/047.jpg

Not remembering what this is, maybe lamb? Margo might be able to help out on this dish

http://i378.photobucket.com/albums/oo226/todobien1/Mexico%20Fall%202010/048.jpg

We had a great time meeting and hanging out with new people. Lots of interesting life stories were told and new friendships made. We may not meet but a year or two, but will all remember each other.
Stay tuned. More to come from Todo and me. Next project: Changing Todo Biens Ticker... Better looking forward than back. :)

Ski People! June and July were my favorite months to ski during my teen years -- especially since the various countries ski team used to practice on the Palmer Snow Field.;) I grew up in the ski industry as my family owned a ski school. My sister and I were real snow rats. Would have never guessed I would give it up as an adult but paying more for a 1/2 day than I used to pay for a year and "quality" appalachian skiing made it not nearly so enjoyable.

Back to our wonderful regularly scheduled programming...

It was fun to give you guys massages, we've been friends now for what 4 years? Laura always said, maybe next time on the massages because she'd never had one.........but we finally did it and I remember she had a very unusual experience.....!

As always good to see you guys......due to the frequency of their trips, we've been together, what 6 or 7 times in the last years?

Looking forward to the fall trip and seeing you Margo! Always nice to know there will always be a happy and friendly face to greet us on our return. Just over 3 months now. Yipeeee!

I agree, Peaceful. It just really calls up that wonderful feeling of waking up and stepping outside to that beautiful event every day in Tulum. The chill of the sand on your bed-warmed feet, the warm breeze, the calling of the birds, the pelicans out on fishing patrol. Wonderful.

Hello ILW,

Good to see you dug out.

Seems we travel the same path

The fruit is called a Rambutan and native to southeast Asia as far as I know. My first one was in Thailand in 1983. Kind of like an easy peel grape but, don't bite to hard on the big seed:palmtree:

Like I need another reason to head to Tulum! Now I can get Rambutans. Yummy

Thanks for the info dionski! Hope we find them again, in Oct. I recommend these to all of you out there to try. Yummy! Wish we had gotten more. The next white surface I want to plant my feet on is that Tulum Beach...It was a long long long winter and a short, wet and snowy Spring.

I think these are related to the "lychee" too!

Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee)

It cross references both names.

I do know that I can get these fresh in my grocery store (lychee) as well as canned. But Wiki says that the canned version loses taste. Don't know, as I haven't tried either version but will!!

Michael Franti was by far, the BEST concert at Red Butte Gardens. No one sat down the entire time. He didn't play a lot of his older stuff, but what he played was just simply Great...peace lover guy, for sure. THE BEST: He was into the audience, walked amongst us, sang to us, danced with us, and then at some point: A bunch of HUGE beach balls started coming from the stage into where we were. AMAZING...it was so damn fun. Don't think anyone will forget that great time, for sure.
