The whale sharks like to hang out north of Cancun....If you want to swim with the sharks, those tours operate out of Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox. It's a good four hour drive and ferry ride to Holbox from Tulum, and the tours leave first thing in the morning. I wouldn't think of it as a day trip. Very much worth doing, just not a Tulum excursion.

The typical "day trips" from Tulum include the Tulum ruins (of course), Coba ruins (about 45 minutes away), Muyil Ruins (about 20 minutes). Wildlife excursions include the monkey preserve (maybe an hour away) and various CEsiak biosphere tours. There are "adventure tours" that include cenotes and ziplines etc. or you can just hit one of the cenotes on your own...snorkeling and dive operators run excursions, too. The reef at Tulum is too far out for swimming from the beach, but if you want to snorkel on your own, best bet is to head back up to Akumal, where there are several good options, Akumal bay, Half Moon Bay and Yal ku lagoon. Those are all activities that various board members have reported on...do a forum search on what interests you and you'll likely find a trip report!

We did the whale sharks out of Isla Mujeres, which is more like a 2-2.5 hour drive plus a ferry ride. Also not a day trip, but a bit shorter than Holbox. There was one tour company I came across in my research that would pick you up in Tulum, drive you to Puerto Juarez (the ferry terminal for Isla M) and then the boat would take you from there out to the sharks. It was very expensive, and a long day, but it was possible. Sorry, I can't remember the name of that particular company, but I'm sure I found it through Google.
