Finally the moment of our much anticipated return to Mexico has arrived!The 6 hour drive to Toronto and overnight stay is just a normal process for us. The flight on Westjet is smooth. We breeze through Customs but then almost get sidetracked by a slick operator posing as an ADO rep but actually trying to get us on a transfer. Finally find the ADO to the far right end of Terminal 2 (a bit further than at Terminal 3 in ’08) and have some time to kill.

Upon arrival in Playa del Carmen I hit the ATM across the street at Scotiabank, purchase bus tickets for Tulum then off we go to the meet Kitsapkat and Sally at the Mimi del Mar for a couple buckets of Corona. Would have enjoyed hanging out a lot longer!:cool:

Margo joins us for a good dinner and drinks at Maison Tulum's restaurant Xcatik. Several drinks, Conchinita Pibil, lime soup, shrimp panuchos, grouper filet plus forgot what Margo had came to 957 pesos including tip (I figure this out later but we left extra anyway).

After a somewhat restless night we awoke to roosters, dogs and traffic but breakfast was good and cheap. Penny did the wiFi thing while I waited for the Continental guy to pick us up. Finally had to call them...some excuse about a new guy but he showed up shortly thereafter then upgraded us at no extra charge (not sure they had what we reserved anyway). Margo had planned to come to XD with us but had been under the weather so we made plans to hook up later next week. Got gas and picked up the supplies at various locations then finally the moment we have been waiting for....!

Ok so you might notice a theme here....some of you know I am a big KC fan so when planning this TR we thought we could put something together using Kenny to guide us!:cool: For you romantics out there Penny and I had " On the Coast of Somewhere Beautiful" and "Running with My Heart" tattoos done a few years back.

Anyway we are barely past the stop light at the 307/Boca Paila intersection when we spot a couple hitchhikers so what the hell! They turn out to be a nice young couple from France who were going down to the El Encanto/Xbalamque cenote. This proved to be right across the road from Rancho San Eric where we were to meet Northernboy and Dallas for a cold one! So after driving around the maze of driveways (few signs) looking for La Palapa we spy a worker who escorts us to the right location! Had a nice visit, cold cervezas and checked out the beach there! Thanks again Paul for the invite!

We are pretty done so head off for a nap...almost unheard of for me! We freshen up and head down to the restaurant for dinner, drinks and conversation with the other guest Kim and Mitch(from Connecticut) and a family who arrives in the dark...Nicky and Johnny with 2 girls; Brave, 5 yrs. and True(aka Tiny) 2.5 yrs. from Portland. A pleasure meeting and hanging with you all. Oh of course Dan is there as well!!

Well you can really get into the vibe at XD, the next 3 days were just chillin', beachbum kind of days....we had finally come home...On the Coast of Somewhere Beautiful!! So here a bunch pics so I don't bore you with being laidback!

Somehow we missed getting pics of the round of coconut bocce ball. Dan managed to hold us off but not without some unexpected competition. Thanks Dan for your hospitality and your great staff Francisca, Venancio, Javier and Alma(sp?) We had a wonderful stay...being able to really chill, kick off the flipflops....the essence of a beachbum vacation and as in another Kenny song, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems! :cool:

Finally get back into Tulum...re-supply mission for pesos, the San Francisco, and Covi. Grabbed a quick lunch at Pollo Bronco. On the way back to Hamaca Loca, as we drive past NVR this guy (good looking, well tanned) is dragging his female companion (tall, long blond hair, etc.) across the road in front of us without looking so had to lay on the horn!! Kids in love!? Anyway we get checked into La Tortuga. This is a great unit with a super deck out front.

We ate at Dos Ceibas twice. Spaghetti amatriciana, Tikin-Xic, water and beer was 500 pesos tip in.

We also ate twice at Tierras del Sol including our splurge meal. Breakfast of huevos motulenos, juice, coffee was about 250 pesos tip in. Our splurge meal was a 7 course rib-eye dinner. Sorry can't give you much detail other than it was great! 1586 pesos with tip but worth every penny. Alexis does only 1 seating with only about 5-6 tables so it is a nice atmosphere. Best to call for reservations; we were lucky, walked in and got the last table!

Thanks Tb. Well we watched Venancio take the coconut out of the tree, proceed to chop it apart and then disappear into the kitchen...so maybe take a trip down and quiz Francisca! They were awesome. Dan tells us Meow Meow is 17 yrs. old and seems quite spry....vocal when she is hungry or looking for attention!:) Yes, Life is Good!

Oh, Solbound, thanks for the chuckle!! I totally forgot about the NVR crossing the road incident.... you are too kind not mentioning the fact that we were in a haze and practically walked into the front of your car!! What I love is that after you beeped, I saw your face in the mirror with that tale tell hat that can't be missed and I knew we had just (almost literally) bumped into you!!

Your pics of XD make me sorry we didn't get down there.... wowowowow.

Yes steaks were at least 12 oz. maybe more... at least 1" thick after being grilled...Just fabulous! Also found some more stuff on Maison Tulum. We don't many food pics but here are a couple.

Upon leaving HL we set our sights on Playa Mambo....turned in our rental and Margo picked us up then off to her favorite taco stand by the Scotiabank for brunch. After Margo checked up on Casa la Tortugita (she is co-manager) we got settled at Playa Mambo.

Westy mentioned we had some noise issues but that came from a vacant property next door (caretaker had some buddies over) so Christian (manager) was able to give us the Ochre Cabana while the party carried on...Good room and actually very spacious and better water pressure!

Thanks, like I said you sorta get used to making that trek but I gotta ask...what in heck is taken you to Sioux Lookout?? That is truly out there! I have lived and worked all over the north most of my life but never been there!
My daughter will be working in the new hospital in Sioux Lookout and her boyfriend is currently working at Lockheart Air...so like good parents we must make the trek again...it is a pretty town near the water, but oh so so far away..Again loved your trip report

Great trip report. ILW and I love Hamaca Loca and Tortuga. Glad to see that "The No Bad Days" sign is still there. There are definitely no bad days when you are in Tulum.

During this time we also did regular walks on the beach with Polly who on one occasion left us around NVR as continued north. As we returned this good-looking tanned guy (again...sigh) comes walking toward us with Polly, says Ola, upon which Polly hooks up with us again and we head back to Playa Mambo for relaxin', cerveza, etc. This all leads up to the TI'er get together at OM!! Westy already mentioned details on menu and attendees so I won't repeat. Angelo and his staff of course did an incredible job!

Quick question about the Naranja room at Playa Mambo: Great windows, looks like they're all screened, which is great, but do they all have shutters to close them down if it rains in that sideways fashion we all love at the beach (or for folks who want to sleep past sunrise)? Hard to tell from this pictures, looks like maybe only a few close down, just curious.

I would definitely stay at Playa Mambo again, especially in one of these Naranja or Verde rooms.

You are right...been going to update the Ticker but some personal family stuff happening so don't want to jump the gun. Soon to be resolved somewhat so you never know now when we will show up in Tulum!! With Polly, unfortunately we spoiled her terribly....guess cause we toe a harder line with our own dog Kali. It's like spoiling the grandkids and then giving them back to the parents! (Don't have grandkids yet!)

Somehwat saddened to be heading out of Tulum for Playa del Carmen but excited to meet up wth our friends later this afternoon!! Arriving in PDC we again walk the several blocks up 5th ave. to Luna Blue, which is just off 5th on Calle 26. Alejandro checked us in and Tony also poked his head out and said Hello. Upgrade into room 23 on 3rd level, just above room 22 whhich we had in 2008; which suited us just fine!

Quickly freshen up then off to the Fusion to meet up with Redhead and Snorkelman (aka Sandie and Ronnie). Some of you might remeber them from our 2008 trip. After some drinks and snacks/meals we headed down the beach to Bad Boys. Well the margaritas are massive as well as mojitos and Smokin' Joe's Ribs (sorry I don't think we got any pics but very good!)

We then decide to hit PDC beach to see what we can find. After stopping by the Blue Parrot....... it was a lot too much disco for us so after a quick cerveza we forged on.

On a side note we stopped walking on 5th Av. deciding to take parallel streets to avoid the constant hawking by the vendors. Can't blame them but get tired of saying No gracias!

We figured we would find something to suit our taste and when we heard some rockin' Santana it was like we struck gold! Turned out to be a place called Yan Ten. This live band was playing some spanish/classic rock and was half filled with locals so figured this was the place! They have alot of loungers closer to the sea (like most places there) but we put our backs to that, grabbed a table and cheered the band on! We hung out all afternoon with beers (2X1 Sundays) with food cost us about $300 pesos. Apparently this band plays every Sunday but also another guy plays there most of the time.

So our last day was a blast ......couldn't have asked much more out of PDC. Had dinner at los Amigos up around Calle 26 & Av. 30. Good local food and prices but I think we were both still a bit overwhelmed by the afternoon and didn't fully appreciate it!

Last morning was basically prepping for trip home, bus ride, shopping for a couple souvienirs at the airport, etc.

Awesome, thanks so much! You know, every time someone posts about Playa I remember how much fun that town can be. The beach looks great, too, however controversially it may have been created. Last time I was there, the main beach looked like hell, this makes things feel a lot less crowded I'm sure. I think I may have to make some time for Playa sometime in my next two trips. My December trip will be with my friend T again, and she and I had a blast in Playa a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder!

As for Luna Blue in Playa, what a great hotel, the only place I will stay when I am there, 4 or 5 times a year.

Really impressive photos and story. You guys know how to make the most of a trip. amach Dos always looks better and better with each TR. The food served is always well presented and different.
