While I'm hardly a "newbie" to the area - we've vacationed in Playa del Carmen a number of times - I have to admit to being largely unfamiliar with the in's and out's of Tulum. Our favourite "chill out" spot is the Paraiso Beach Club, and we make a point of making a couple of day trips there each visit to Playa. For our next excursion to Quintana Roo, we figure on adding a week or so in Tulum to our usual 4 weeks in Playa, so we'd be looking at moving down there March 13, 2006. For the most part, we anticipate doing pretty much nothing but vegging out. Since El Paraiso is our beach of choice, we wonder if anyone might be able to offer some suggestions for accomodations in that end of the area? We're not looking for luxurious, but we do like our comfort. Minimum requirements would be for a private bath and electricity. Air conditioning would be nice, as would a pool, but not absolutely necessary. Walking distance to dining options would be a bonus. Price range? Would $100 a night be out of line? No objection to paying less, of course. I get the impression we may not have much luck in the North end. Are we more likely looking at something South of where the road from the Pueblo tees? If that's the case, I guess we'll be cabbing it to El Paraiso, which I suspect is a tad far to walk. Of course, if we can find a comparable beach closer to our digs, that would be ideal, though I think it would be hard to beat El Paraiso. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hey Bumper.
We were in Tulum last week at Cabanas Copal. Can you say rustic, no electricity, no A/C, and few bared behinds walking around. We liked it there, it was the right time of year, not hot at night, but our cabana was next to the beach so there was always a good breeze. This may be too rustic for you, but they had a good restaurant you can try.

Azulik is right next door to Copal and seems to be a little more upscale with all the ammenities of Copal that you can use. Still no A.C though. 100 USD might not be enough for Azulik.

Bumper,
I think you would enjoy Los Lirios. You will need a car, because you will not want to eat all your meals there - and there are good restaurants north on the beach road. Huge rooms and bathrooms, lotsa hot water, good airconditioning, beachview from every room, great beach acceptable quality restaurant and bar - it was all good.
We reserved through travel-center.com and got a price that was less than any others we found.
Here are some photos: the buildings - 4 units in each one

Just beware Los Lirios is known for overbooking and bumping those who have lower rates thru travel groups and web bookings, we found this out first hand as did 3 other families. We booked and paid them 6 months ahead of time thru one of Los Lirios own web specials and they still bumped us, they made arrangements for us at a hotel in TOWN 2 miles from the beach, I declined and with a little help from the police down at the T intersection they made Los Lirios give me a refund, well it took them 5 months to post the credit to my account with some assistance by my credit card company. Fortunately we were able to find a room at Nueva Vida as most resorts were full, I do not know what happened to the other families. The staff also is not very friendly and actually very rude at times thats why I contacted the local police to help. We have stayed at Anna Y Jose and went over to Los Lirios next door a few times but the food was not good at all and they were not very friendly during their happy hour either. We have been to Posada Margherita, Nueva Vida, Ana Y Jose, and Zamas and they were all wonderful, personally I would stay away from Los Lirios.

How do you insert a picture in these messages?
I have the photos already online somewhere. I make sure the photo is open in its own window or tab - being a mac user, I control-click on the photo (in the website where it resides) and then click "open in a new tab", since I use a browser that does tabs. Firefox, Netscape and Safari all do this. If I was using Internet Explorer, I guess I would select "open in a new window.
I highlight and then copy the URL. When writing the post right here, like I am doing now, I click the icon with the mountain. If you hold your cursor over it, you will get a little text box that says "Insert image". Click it. A little pop -up box appears in which I paste the URL of the photo - remember the url, I wrote about above :).
I then submit the reply and there it is, just like this:
