First I wanted to say how amazingly helpful and inspiring the trip reports on this site have been. Especially Adguy's..I take photos of menus and food on trips too! Love it.

We are leaving Feb 12 and have booked 2 places to stay. We are staying at Las Conchitas for 4 nights and Nueva Vida for 4 nights. We have our teenage son w/us so we needed to book cabanas w/room for 3. We are staying at the 2 floor cabana at LC and the cabana w/a loft at Nueva Vida. Both of thes places have gotten good reviews as far as I can tell but i wanted to see what those of you who have been to Tulum lately think. Anyone stay there or visit to check them out? I may be stuck w/Nueva Vida because we gave a deposit but maybe not. Curious about Hamaca Loca..Adguy you mentioned it was your new favorite in your trip report but I didn't see any other comments yet..anything to add?

Thanks!

We are paying $220/night at Nueva Vida in cabana ola which is a junior suite. It's right on the beach w/a bedroom and sleeping loft. Does this seem like alot? We were a little limited by the fact that we needed a place that had a cabana w/2 bedrooms or at least 2 different sleeping areas. Sorry to reply to my own post but just wanted to add this info..

I have not stayed at either property, but here is a web site I used to compare properties - do you want privacy between your son & yourselves?? I don't know of too many "bad" properties in Tulum - it all depends on your wants -

Also - welcome to the board:) :D :)

Mariposa,

I loved the two cabanas at Hamaca Loca. During your vacation, they're running $75 USD (Bungalow El Caracol) or $95 USD (Bungalow La Tortuga). Either have a King bed and a sofa bed, with private bathroom. Not sure if they are available but you can check them out at www.hamacaloca.com (http://www.hamacaloca.com) and see. They have an amazing beach right outside their door...

We may have to save Hamaca loca for next time..While it does seem like
Nueva Vida is a little on the high side we already gave them %50 deposit
which is non refundable during president's day.

Yes, our son is 17 and while we don't want him too far away we would like a little privacy as I'm sure he would too..so we thought the sleeping loft seemed like a good compromise. We are paying $160 for a 2 story cabana
at La Conchita. This place seems like it's a little bit more in the thick of things (if there is such a thing in Tulum!) so we thought we'd try that and then Nueva Vida because it's a little more isolated and the beach there looks beautiful.

I'm getting really excited! We've been to Tulum a couple times before but not for 10 years. It looks like it's changed a bit since then..We stayed at Ana y Jose's both times before.

Minnie mex, we're from minnesota too!

I think you have chosen two excellent choices, albeit a bit on the expensive side. I have heard nothing but good things about both of them in the years since I first visited Tulum.

Hamaca Loca has only recently become noticed..It caught my eye a year ago, but looks like they have made some great improvements in that time, judging from the website. I am one of those people who doesn't mind the bare basics, a year ago, Hamaca Loca provided those but not much else except very nice people who owned and ran the place. It appears now, they have spruced it up beautifully! I just bet this will be one of those places you have a hard time finding availablity with before long.

It doesn't take much to please me..I could pitch a tent on the beach and be happy..lol...but I would very much enjoy a stay at either place you have chosen.

Enjoy!!!

We stayed at Nueva Vida in June of 05. It is very nice with a beautiful beach that goes for miles. It is somewhat rustic as are alot of the resorts near Tulum and very quiet. We stayed in the top floor of the white cabana right on the beach with a beautiful view. Last year we stayed at another quiet place that everyone talks about on this forum. I hate to mention the name (TT), because it will be hard to book a room there in the future. We felt it was a better value. If I wasn't so inept, I would post some pictures here. Enjoy your trip!

I have to keep reminding myself that I made the right decision for our situation. I did inquire w/Tita's but it seemed to be sort of tight quarters in most of the rooms for 3. I think the price is ok for what we're getting -a very large private cabana right on the beach. I love these forums but I am such a second guesser..It's hard not to drop everything and go"hamaca loca it is!" (geez, could that photo adman posted be any more perfect looking?)

Yes, I e-mailed them to see if they have availibility so at least I can put it to
rest.

Ok, now that I'm registered on to the food research...!

I know exactly what you mean - I second guess myself also - but believe me, there really isn't a "bad" choice for Tulum - every single place has its assets - no liabilities! You make your own memories - so you made the right decision, now start enjoying the wait -

P.S.
Since I am not leaving for Tulum like others - I DO NOT WANT SNOW OR ICE OR SLEET OR ANYTHING ELSE COLD!!:D

Better yet...y'all need to come here. There's a small private beach near St. Augustine (Vilano Beach) that's just perfect for sipping your favorite adult beverage. It's suppose to be sunny and 80 this weekend...you get the airline tickets and I'll bring the tequilla! :D

We have stayed at Nueva Vida a few times, we prefer Tita's instead, the cost is about 1/2, the rooms are brighter, and its the same beach with excellent host and employees. Nueva's prices have been steadily increasing, it is a very nice place also with very nice ownwers and staff, but as I said having done both we prefer tita's, I think rooms 6,7,8 would afford you plenty of space. Or try Cabanas Tulum, I do not know the age of your son but you could get two units side by side for about $150 for both, same beach as Nueva Vida.

well, I may have blown it by jumping the gun and reserving nueva vida ahead becuase now we've sent a deposit and I think they won't return it
becuase we're going during a peak time (president's day) oh well, at the time it seemed like the best choice. I did e-mail nueva vida to see if it would even be possible to cancel..they haven't responded so we'll see.

Mariposa,
I would not worry about it, you will have a great time, Gia and Oscar the owners at Nueva Vida are terrific people and their grounds and units are kept perfect, their little restaurant La Banana has some very good food, I particulary enjoyed the breakfast there. This trip you can check out some other locations for return trips, as I really do not know anyone who has not always wanted to return to Tulum. Tita has a very good restaurant also, stop by for a meal and check the place out, we loved eating on the outside deck. You did not make a wrong decision on the resort you chose as far as quality goes, I just try to get the better price for my dollar so I can than make more frequent trips!
During your stay be sure to have dinner at Posada Margherita, you do need a reservation, Tita's, La Nave, Charlies, Don cafeto (two locations one in town one on the beach road) El Mariachi, La Vita E Bella.

Go enjoy, relax, unwind, you will come back addicted

Ditto what Pete said!;) I usually go for the short trips, 5-6 days, and stay at the cheap places...that way I can go back more frequently..but that doesn't mean I would hesitate to stay at either place you have selected..in fact, I think it's time to treat myself! If you enjoy your visit as much as I know you will, and come under the spell of Tulum..the magic that draws us back time and time again..believe me, it is money well spent and you won't regret a penny of it!!:D Don't sweat it, once you are there, you won't care how much it cost..you will know you are in paradise and it is worth it!

If I wasn't heading to Tulum in 23 days I would try and butt in on your Florida trip. Besides I aint afraid of lizard poop and as for mosquitos...HA try growing up in Northern Manitoba!! I am already trying to brace myself for the humidity which will turn my straight hair into soft curls (just terrible ;) ) and I am sure that I will get sand in places where no sand should be...but these are the sacrifices that me being a hearty Canadian am prepared to make. :D

After all the talk about Hamoca I am putting it on our short list for places to stay for our last 4 nites there. Because our time in Tulum is broken up with a week in Cozumel we can check it out along with a few others our first 3 nites there. Will have to see if we want to stay that far south as were not planning on renting a car. But hey who knows...that could change.

We have been there in February and it was very nice, about 85, the breeze is a little stronger at that time but as long as you have the sea breeze blowing nicely there is no problems with mosquitoes. They become an issue in areas that are calm and warm, never had a problem with them in Pueblo Tulum eExtended Weather Forecast for Tulum, Mexico

This year has seen more rain than some previous years, but it is rare to have an all day rainstorm. There have been a couple of Nortes that bring in unseasonably cool weather recently too, but again, it's rare.
One of the locals told me they live all year for the months of Jan. and Feb. I guess to those of us who live outside sub tropical climates, it may seem very humid..but in my mind, it is perfect beach weather, perfect jungle exploration weather. It may be a bit chilly for cenote swims if you are like me and seem to get cold anywhere once the sun goes down  but it will feel hot away from the beach and just wonderful when you are on it! Rain showers may show up, they may not..but they go as quickly as they come as a rule, leaving behind a bit lower humidity and refreshing sunshine!

Sometimes I just think you can't make some people happy - we are coming from cold temperatures, so enjoy the heat, humidity, & rain. I know when I was down there, one of those Norte's came through & our taxi driver was saying "frio, frio, frio" and holding his hands across his chest & shivering - we went back to our room & went swimming - my point is, its all in how you see it.

I must confess to being cold in Tulum...lol..It was around 80 degrees..I took a dip in the sea..then sat down in the shade..next thing I knew my teeth were chattering..and I was moving into the sun to get warm. That was in the middle of the day though..I never felt even chilly at night.

Hello everyone, We are planning to stay at Nueva Vida De Ramiro for 7 nights but can't decide which beachfront cabana to ask for. It's a tie between the cement one "Alma del Mar" and a wooden one -"Amor Eterno". Does anyone know if the concrete one is hotter/cooler/stuffier than a wooden cabana? Are there window screens in either of them? Is there more foot traffic beside one of them than the other? Hoping someone on the forum has some advice.

Tulumreservations@gmail.com) and asking these questions, she's very nice and will answer fairly quickly We haven't stayed there yet (but will be next week) so I don't have the answers. When are you going? I can check it out but we won't be back til the 21st.

Christine,

As to which is better? The classic "it depends" answer applies. Cement is more secure, provides greater protection from bugs, and is more watertight. Wooden cabanas fluctuate better with the temperatures (cool down or heat up faster) and offer a better breeze (so they're less stuffy).

Thank you, Mariposa & AdGuy for your replies. Perhaps my husband & I should reserve half and half and experience both cabanas! I will be very interested in reading about your experience there, Mariposa. I would appreciate it if you could check out Alma del Mar & Amor Eterna. Buen viaje!

We have stayed in both, if you are in the upper unit in the cement building you get one hell of a breeze and no bugs, leave the sliding doors open at night with the screen closed and it is very cool and comfortable, also great view up and down the beach.

If you stay in the wooden one you get more of the eco feeling and excellent privacy on your terrace, there are no problems with bugs here either and you still get a nice breeze, I really do not think you can go wrong with either we just prefer the wooden one as it gives you the more jungle eco feeling which we love so much about Tulum, its rustic but very nice and comfortable.

Hi, i'm going to tulum in October and am planning on staying at the exact same two hotels you stayed at (Las Conchitas and Nueva Vida)!

Could you tell me any info about the two places, including the distance between the two, and their location

Enjoying reading from last winter but at first I thought Gayle had her PC fixed! Not so, I guess as this was old but still refreshing!! Makes me miss when we all gather in the winter to talk "beach talk" for consolation for the nasty weather!

Mariposa, it sounds like I am booked in the same cabana at Las Conchitas for January. At this point I have just let it go. I am in the same boat as you, I had to find a place for three, but even worse, a place for three singles. But one is my daughter so I can always shack up with her. I love the fact that we will have one upper balcony, and one lower deck. Two views. Love it.

Mariposa, how did you reserve your room at Nueva Vida? I am planning on staying there in October, but just received a vague email from the hotel management asking to wire money to a random bank account in order to reserve a room...
