That's basically my question. I am not renting a car, so what is the cheapest way to get to Tulum from the Cancun airport? Cab? Thank you!

You can take the ADO bus from Cancun airport. I'm not sure how much it costs all the way to Tulum, but it is only about $8 to Playa Del Carmen.

It's supposed to be very nice, they even have a bathroom and show movies.

I'm not sure about the bus route. There is a bus schedule on the Playa site I think. We took a collectivo from Playa to Tulum. It was only about 25 pesos per person. It takes you to town. Then you would need to take a cab to your final destination.....60 pesos.

I posted on the Playa.info site that I was thinking of doing that, but was warned that with luggage, there may not be enough room on the van.

I think you can also take the bus from the airport to the Cancun bus terminal & then catch a bus all the way to Tulum - or take the bus from the airport to Playa & then a bus from Playa to Tulum - I thought about doing one of these, but decided against it, as it would involve to much time. What we did was hire a transportation company to drive us down to Tulum - It was not cheap, cost us $140.00 for transportation direct to our hotel from the airport. We used http://getdita.com/

The bus from the airport to Playa is $80 pesos. From Playa to Tulum the fare is $34 pesos. Total cost is around $10 US. You can save another $2 US if you take the bus from the airport to the bus station in downtown Cancun then to Tulum.

I so wish they would start a bus direct from the airport to Tulum. Surely enough people are going there now! Well, OK, maybe not.

I'm really thinking of trying the bus, but the extra time involved is a deterrent for me.

MinnieMex, was that $140 one way, or round-trip?

Round trip - for two people -

The only problem was (as I said in my trip report) that we had to wait for a vehicle to take us, as we arrived on a Saturday - the busiest day of the week for everyone down there. (Only about 45 minutes, but it seemed forever, as I wanted to get there!)

Was doing alittle snoopying around and found this one that is alittle cheaper. www.affiliate.viator.com (http://www.affiliate.viator.com) It looks to be $125.00 return for 2 people. Still have a few more to check out. Most prices are based on min 2 person so even if you are flying solo you still have to pay the same price:( . Will keep hunting and let you know if I see anything else interesting.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to decide about renting a car. I did it last time and it worked out fine, but everyone's got me sufficiently scared into buying the agency's insurance (my cc co. assured me I'd be covered, but everyone says it's dicey) and that almost doubles the cost of a car. I'd be looking at almost $400 for a week!

On the other hand, it was great to be able to go where I wanted, do what I wanted, like run up to the San Francisco for drinking water when I discovered that Hemingway's didn't provide bottled water (it was OK, just wish I'd know in advance), that sort of thing. And almost every evening I used the car to get to a restaurant.

Yet another reason to hope some of my friends will join me, so we can share the cost, but if I go alone, I might try taking the bus if I can figure out the schedules.

But knowing that the transfer would be $125 RT is still a big savings. I can probably hire a lot of cabs for the $275 I'd save over a rental car.

I don't know what kind of car you are looking at or from whom - but it seems a bit high - here is a site that has all the car rental places listed - check those out - I just don't think I would go back to Tulum without a car again - there is just too much to see -

I highly recommend Buster Car Rental. Depending on when you're going and the type of vehicle you need you can get something for as low as $180USD/week (which includes insurance and unlimited miles). Even during high season, a four-door, automatic with A/C is only $288 for seven days.

You can find them at: http://www.busterrentacar.com/

Ditto what Ad Guy said. Buster was great for me. I will definitely use them again. If you want to explore outside the beach area or the pueblo, a car is really the only way to go.

Thanks for the info, I'll check them out. I had checked Cancunrentalcar and Easyway. Both, for the week I was looking at, were in the high three hundreds, but maybe it's because I was looking for 9 days.

That could change things!

If I go to Tulum alone, I won't be exploring much, just hanging out and reading and swimming. I'd be using the car for getting there and back and going to dinners. Which is why I was thinking maybe I wouldn't need one so much. If I go with friends, though, we'll definitely get a car because we'll be wanting to get out and about.

Does that make sense?

Off to look at Buster right now, thanks!

Looks like a great place, thanks for the tip, Lee.

But yes, if I'm looking for the full 9 day trip it'll be up to $384. However, I might be spending a few days in PDC, so for a $25 drop-off fee I can ditch the car in PDC and take the bus back to the airport when I leave. That'll save some dough.

Thanks!
