Hi everyone!
I joined this forum years ago, but never posted.
I have begun to make plans for a trip to Playa in late March/ early April. I was having a heck of a time trying to decide in which part of town to stay. I realized that it is time to stay elsewhere. I love Playa a lot, but I have been there so many times, that I feel I need to stay elsewhere.
Tulum came to mind immediately. I have visited the ruins and Tulum's gorgeous beach on several occasions, but have never stayed overnight or for a few nights. I have always wanted to stay on the beach or even in town. So this time I am going for it!:):):sun:

T!hank you Minniemex
I am thinking about staying at Coco Tulum cabañas. I want to be on the beach. This property has gotten very good reviews and is inexpensive.
One of the forum members from Playa.info and I are going to be driving from Dallas to Playa. She got a vehicle donated to a charity in Playa, so she needed someone to drive with her so I volunteered. I have always wanted to do a trip like this.

Wow, that sounds like so much fun!!! I had some friends who drove from Minneapolis to Zihuatenejo, took a long time but they really enjoyed the trip. After that, they decided they could handle being married. :D

I think we will have a great time. It's probably going to take us six days to get to Playa. I have been reading a lot about this and the route most people take is Brownsville/Matamoros-Tampico-Veracruz-Villahermosa-Chetumal-Playa.
Some travelers will take a scenic route through a portion of Veracruz instead of taking a toll road. What I am thinking of doing is taking all toll roads, but when we get to Villahermosa what we will do is go to Ciudad del Carmen-Campeche-Mérida-Playa. I don't like the stretch between Villahermosa and Chetumal. I have traveled that section and although there are some ruins and you can go to Palenque, other than that, it's kind of boring. I don't like having to stop in Escárcega. It's an unattractive town. On the alternate route that we might be taking, we will be able to spend the night in Mérida, and travel through some neat villages. It's a few more miles that the direct route, but because of the scenery and there are more places that we can stop. We'll be driving an SUV and it will probably be sucking up gas, so I want to make sure we won't be going through some long stretches and worrying if we will have enough gasoline.

I am sure you have researched the driving part so you know the title to the vehicle has to be in the drivers name.

Steve,
I have been looking at several websites. Some of them say that as long as you have a notarized letter from the owner of the vehicle, you can drive a car into Mexico.
I don't want to take any chances so, I will be looking into this further.
Take care,
Alicia

This is something my husband & I have been thinking of doing in the future!
Please be sure and share your experience with us! Steve has shared many experiences on the road and we would love to hear yours too!
I will also love hearing about your stay at CoCo Tulum. Other than the shared bathrooms, it really seems like the best deal going!

Alicia...I would check into that a lot further. Rolly has some good information on his web site. http://rollybrook.com/vehicle_permits.htm You might be able to do the permit online.
Another point I would take into consideration is the import permit will probably be in your name and you will never be allowed to bring another vehicle into Mexico until the first one is removed.
Here are some good driving directions from another site. They are a little outdated but should help.

Hey Russ!
The trip might fall through. A friend was going to get a vehicle donated for charity, but it turns out that the owner does not want to donate it until this summer. We have to figure some things out. If that does not work, then I probably won't travel to Tulum until this summer or next fall.
