12/1/10, Wed. We got up at 4 AM today and drove to the Pensacola Airport in the car we rented yesterday for 1 day for $37 from Dollar. This trip was with Apple Vacations, booked by Cheryl of Global Travel last May, mainly because we were spending the month of Nov. in Alabama, thereby flying to Cancun out of Pensacola and then flying back to Indy to be home for Christmas with our family. We will probably go back to Alabama sometime around the middle of January 2011. The trip cost $3741 for the 2 of us for 14 days, 13 nights - 7 nights at a resort we stayed at 2 years ago and loved - Catalonia Royal Tulum, and 6 nights at a resort we've never stayed at - another Catalonia - the Catalonia Playa Maroma. The CRT is south of Playa del Carmen about 30 minutes, and the CPM is north of Playa about 30 minutes. We had to arrange our own transportation between resorts. We were flying American Airlines, which is not our favorite. Our flight took off on time at 7 AM, arrived into Miami and left in a timely manner. We had time between flights to eat a good Chinese meal - fairly reasonable.
We arrived into Cancun on time around 1 PM. We went through Immigrations and Customs quicker than we ever have (hardly any lines), and then got the red light. He searched 3 out or 4 bags, and we were on our way. We only spend 45 min. to an hour in the airport. We found the Apple representatives and were on our way within 1/2 hour. There were 2 other sets of people to be dropped off 1st - at Dreams Puerto Aventuras and the Barcelo Maya Palace. We definitely would not want to stay in Puerto Aventuras or the Palace, although we would consider staying at Barcelo Colonial or Tropical again. Each place took about 15 min. We saw where our 2nd resort was. The 2 resorts are about 45 minutes apart. We had found out a few days ago that a world-wide Global Warming Conference was taking place in Cancun, had started a couple days before we arrived, and would last 2 weeks. There were police and soldiers everywhere between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. I'm sure they were worried about drug gangs and terrorists. We were to read later that there were armed ships in the water around Cancun also. They are working on an overpass at Playa (it's a mess), and our driver took us a back way around Playa - took forever!
We arrived at CRT around 4 PM. It gets dark around 5-5:30 (they're on Alabama time) so we knew it was too late to change into our swimming suits. When we arrived at the front desk, Miguel helped us. There were a lot of cars parked out front, so we were worried about getting our room email request. I had never received an answer from CRT, like I did 2 years ago. I showed him my email request, and he said he thought he could meet our request. We got room 6114 - the closest building to the beach, 2nd floor, with 2 beds - better than 2 years ago. It was building 5 then. I had asked for either 5 or 6. We slipped him $5 - we were so happy. He was very appreciative. In about 1/2 hour our luggage was brought to our room. The weather here today is cool and cloudy and very windy, feels like mid 70s, a lot different than usual - it might have rained earlier. It's really great for our first arrival day. We sat out on our balcony awhile before starting to unpack. I could see staying in a hotel without air on the Tulum beach in this type of weather.
We were supposed to meet the Apple representative at 5:30, so we didn't even have time to go look at the beach. We rushed back to the lobby after unpacking, and he did not show up! We had the hotel concierge call the Apple office. There was another couple waiting for him also. They said he had a problem at another hotel, and would be there at 6:15 tomorrow night. Gee, he could have called! We had discovered we had the wrong transfer date on our return transfers from the wrong hotel. We had a Margarita and then another at the Lobby Bar, and then after talking to some other Americans - 2 of which we met 2 years ago - Les had a Baby Monkey drink - chocalately, really good, and Bob another Margarita. Then we went to the Italian restaurant, Toscana, but there was a 20 min. wait, and a 30 min or more wait at the Tapas restaurant. That's the bad thing about no buffet. The restaurants get busy after 7 or 7:30 PM. Both of these restaurants and the Mexican, Centenario, were up near the lobby. So we walked all the way out to the beach where the noontime buffet is the Royal Grill at night, hoping there would not be a long wait here. Amazingly we got right in - it didn't seem that busy. We each had steak - it and the potatoes were great, along with the chicken Caesar salad. The steaks were done exactly as we ordered them, but the service was unbelievably slow. We were here approximately 1 1/4 hours, which normally wouldn't matter, but we were kind of tired, getting up at 4 AM. The atmosphere was great - you could hear the waves and feel the breeze. We then went back to the room since the show, which was an Elvis Presley impersonator that night and would have been ok, was clear up front near the lobby. Les still had to finish unpacking and getting the beach bags ready for in the morning. Bob was asleep within minutes before Les even laid down on the bed! This is a fantastic room, and the air seems great!
12/2 Thurs. Bob went out at 6:30 AM, and saved 2 chairs and a table at the far north end of the beach under a palm. He saw the sun come up. Then we walked up to the lobby for the buffet breakfast at La Selva Restaurant. After having a great breakfast with lots of bacon and wonderful exotic fruit, Bob went back to the room to get suntan spray on, and Les went on to the beach. She swam 45 min. in both directions, and out beyond the buoys 1/2 again as far as shore before Bob arrived. So far she has seen no living coral. There were 2-3' waves, and she played in them for 10 min. We ate lunch at the La Palapa buffet overlooking the beach. We snorkeled 25 min. later, and Les swam another 15 min., for a total of 1 hr. 25 min. We didn't really see much snorkeling. We then took a 15 min. walk south on the beach and back. We stopped at a little handicraft shack on the beach, and Les bought a handmade wooden bracelet and a pair of large shell earrings for $11 total - good deal, and helping the locals out.
Once again, our Apple representative did not show up at 6:15 PM - 2nd night in a row of not showing up, and not calling either! The hotel got hold of another Apple customer service person on the phone, and Les told her we had a problem with our transfers back to the airport, and that it needed to be fixed - now! She took care of it right on the phone, then I handled the phone over to the other couple that had a similar problem. Apple seems to have problems with transfers when you go to 1 hotel and return from a different one. But neither our travel agent or I, when I looked over the documents from Apple, caught the error. The date was 1 week too soon and from the 1st hotel, not the 2nd. We ate at the Mexican restaurant, Centenario, tonight - not as good as the Italian, but ok. The soup and salad were good. Neither of us liked our appetitizers. Bob's entree, a beef burrito, was ok, but not very large. Les's mixed fajitas (chicken and beef) were ok, just not like at Mi Pueblo, our local Mexican restaurant! Then we looked at the vendors' wares that were set up in the hotel lobby. Les saw an abalone pendant with just a little silver (a nice design) that she liked, but it was a ridiculous price! He dropped down some, but it was still $100 - way too much!
12/3 Fri. Today we ate breakfast and caught a collectivo to Tulum for $3 each, after eating breakfast. It is a very short walk out to the highway from CRT, only less than a block. We got off at the intersection of the Boca Paila Road (left to the beach and right to Coba, going south) and Highway 327. We thought maybe a taxi from here might be cheaper than from downtown Tulum (pueblo), but it was $5 to Ana Y Jose Beach Club. He wanted $7, Les offered $4, and we settled for $5. That beach club is just south of the rocky stretch, which had us a little worried, but it is the one Jack and Janet of Posada Luna del Sur hotel recommended 2 years ago. According the Internet, that hotel is now managed (owned?) by another nice couple, and Jack and Janet have moved on. When we arrived, you could see the rocks, and when we walked north toward them, there were pieces of dead coral on the beach, but none at the beach club. It was all sand, and today had gentle waves, where we swam and played. Les swam out quite a ways. We could not even see where the reef was. We got to use the nice beach beds, where we were able to get shade in a little while when the sun moved. We arrived about 10:30 AM. We did not have to pay for the beds, just order either drinks or food now and then. Beer was $3, while soft drinks were $2.50. Margaritas were way too much - $7! It was really nice.
After swimming 35 min. and 45 min. (Bob swam some also), we took about a 1/2 hr. round-trip walk south. Les noticed a lady walking the beach, selling jewelry. We started talking to her, and Les found out it was 'Guylene', whom Les has read about on the Tulum.info forum. 'Patmex' bought some stuff from her, and became good friends with her. Les just couldn't believe it. She actually met someone she's read about on the forum! Les asked her to walk down to our beach beds (a short distance) and show her what she had. Ana y Jose's was nice in bringing her out a glass of water. Guylene has some beautiful stuff, all handmade out of shells and stones (all kinds). We had only brought so much money with us, and we were still going to Tulum pueblo after the beach, so Les needed to choose just one set of something. She finally decided on a blue shell Mother of Pearl necklace and matching earrings, for $40. Les tried, half-heartedly, to talk her down, almost feeling guilty doing it, but ended up paying that. It was well worth it. She saw nothing like it later in Tulum, or even in Playa later. It was beautiful. Les would have liked to have bought something else, but hopefully we'll run into her again next time we come. Guylene is from Haiti, and is a beautiful lady, and is so nice. There was also another jewelry lady set up at Ana y Jose, but she was much more expensive.
After spending about 4 hours at the beach club, we caught a taxi into Tulum pueblo for 50 pesos ($4). We had him drop us at Don Cafeto's and ate there. We got free chips and salsa and pickled vegetables. Bob had chicken enchiladas, and Les had an appetizer of black bean nachos with cheese and guacamole. We each had a Margarita, and the total bill was $23, including tip.We only hit a few stores on that side of the street this time. It seems like Tulum pueblo is really hurting, and that there were a lot more stores there 2 years ago. We caught a collectivo back then. In pesos it was 60, which was only $5 for both of us. It is definitely better to use pesos for collectivos.
We had been really worried about a lot of places not taking American $s this trip, and there was actually a warning slip in the Apple information and on the Internet about $100 being the most $s a business could take in 1 transaction. We were worried about some places not taking American $s at all, and at the hotel shops they would not take American $. You had to either charge it to your room, or get money changed at the money changer in the hotel, which was not a good rate. Most everywhere else, though, they would take dollars, but because of various exchange rates, it was better to pay in pesos in a lot of places, like the beach club. So in Tulum Bob changed money into pesos at a rate as high as $11.75. The hotel only offered $10.50 at the most, but at shops they mostly gave a 12 pesos to $1 ratio.
Tonight neither one of us was crazy about going up front to a restaurant or out to the beach to the Grill, and Les had wanted to try room service this trip, since we didn't 2 years ago. It is included in the A-I here. Bob ordered a hamburger and a chef's salad, and Les ordered a cheese sandwich (had to get her cheese fix) and a chef's salad. It had said on the trip reports on this hotel, and they said on the phone when we ordered, that it might be up to 1/2 hr. But the food came within 15 min., and it was outstanding! The Chef's salads were better than anything we've had at the Ala Cartes so far. They had fresh lettuce, including dark green, chicken, ham, bacon, eggs, and cheese in them, with good Thousand Island dressing. We have to do this at least 1 more time! There is a pretty extensive menu up to 10 PM, then sandwiches only after that all night long. They also offer a full breakfast menu in the morning - 7 to 11 AM, which we didn't get to try this trip.

I will continue this later.

Thanks for the great start! Any pictures? I am really interested in those two resorts. Both on beautiful beaches.

Continuing on 12/4 Sat.,
It was a great day today for swimming and snorkeling. Les got a total of 1 hr. 40 min. swimming and snorkeling. Bob took a long beach walk. Just when we started snorkeling, Bob's mask broke. 2 years ago Les's mask had broke, and Bob fixed in by tying it in a know on one side, and she adjusted it from the other side. So he went on in. Les found out later, when he went in, he got in this one area of coral close to the surface when the tide is down (didn't see it in time) and got several scratches on his arm. He was very lucky he got out of it and didn't get his back all messed up. It's a dangerous place there, especially if the waves were larger. It was a little hotter today in the morning, but then the breeze picked up, and the afternoon was definitely cooler. It felt downright cool in the shade, especially if you were wet. The snorkel boat anchored offshore, so, of course, Les had to swim out to it as she did 2 years ago, only this time with her snorkel gear. Another smaller boat was also anchored near the commercial snorkel boat. Les saw lots of living coral and dead coral, but not as many fish as 2 years ago. We met Judith from Ontario, Canada. She has been all over, including Belize. The silver guy showed up for the 1st time today. He was there waiting on Les when she came in from her swim to the snorkel boat. We don't know if he remembered her from 2 years ago or not. She bought a .925 silver Mayan bracelet, black and silver with the Mayan calendar on it, for $20.
Tonight we had a couple drinks in the lobby bar and then went to dinner right after they opened (6 PM) at the Italian restaurant, Toscana. Casual dress is allowed at all ala cartes and the buffet here, including shorts, but you kind of feel like dressing up at the ala cartes because they are so fancy. It was outstanding, both in quality of food and great service, by far the best of the 3 we've been to. We both liked our salads and minestrone soup. Bob loved his spaghetti, and Les lover her cheese canolli pasta. These were not even the main courses, although we could have stopped right there, and it would have been enough for Les. Les liked her main course, grilled chicken breast and potatoes. It was just too much food. She gave part of it to Bob. Bob liked his grouper also.
12/5 Sun. We skipped breakfast this morning. Bob went on a walk, and Les swam 35 min. first thing. Today Bob's key card had gotten messed up be being in the same pocket as his cell phone, and Les's got messed up by putting it in the waterproof holder along with her magnetic bracelet (to check the authenticity of silver on the beach). We never thought about either thing. So Bob walked up and got us 2 reprogrammed key cards. This afternoon, after leaving the beach, we stopped at the beach snack bar, Sorrento, and had several drinks and some pizza and other stuff. Then, since they were giving a Spanish lesson in the bar area where we were seated, we and one other girl took part. We learned a lot. Bob gave the Spanish teacher a $5 tip. We ordered room service again later on tonight, since we weren't as hungry. He had his hamburger and chef's salad, and Les just had the chef's salad - delicious as before.
12/6 Mon. This morning we found out we could not get a free shuttle up to our other hotel, Catalonia Playa Maroma. We figured we couldn't, but it was worth a try! It sounds like it's going to be $35-$38 for a taxi up there. After breakfast we caught a collectivo to the intersection of Hwy. 307 and the Boca Paila Road again. We caught a taxi out to Parayso, which we thought was a beach club (according to a map I got off of the Internet) and was the 1st place north of Tita Tulum. It wasn't a beach club any longer, and Akin, just north of it, which was also supposed to be a beach club, charged $20 for the day, in addition to buying drinks. To heck with that! So we had the taxi take us back to Any Y Jose again. Les had really wanted to be down near where Ocho (from 2 years ago) had been, that the federals had closed up, but we didn't know of any beach clubs down there. She really messed up on this trip. She had ordered the new Mapchick maps, but by mistake brought along the older ones (2008) which didn't go down as far on the Tulum beach.
We once again had a great 3-4 hours here. The waves were very gentle (definitely not body surfing waves), and the swimming was great. Bob really likes it this way. Les swam way out again - even farther than before - farther out then even with the big rock complex to the north. We tried a Margarita, which was 65 pesos (expensive), not very big, and the worst tasting Margarita we've ever had! So the rest of the time we had pop and beer. This time we walked to the north, past the rock complex, toward the point. We walked past Amansala, Hemingway Cabanas and Maya Tulum. Les found a few small cool pieces of coral. We drank one of our bottles of water, and Les scooped it full of Tulum sand, the best sand of all, to take back!
Les had hoped to see Guylene, the jewelry lady again, or to see the jewelry at Ana Y Jose again, but neither was there. We knew this would be our last time at the Tulum beaches this trip because tomorrow is our last full day at CRT, and the other resort is too far north, so we regretfully caught a taxi back to Tulum Pueblo. This time we just had Margaritas at Don Cafetos, getting the free chips, salsa and pickled vegetables, which was all we needed. We covered the rest of the shops, which Les was sure were not as many as 2 years ago. Tulum pueblo seems to be hurting, but their prices sure are not! Les bought a beautiful abalone/.925 silver bracelet with 10 large abalone stones for $60. She talked them down from $120, plus they had to take a couple links out of it (too loose). She felt like she got a good deal here, especially later when she saw the prices of abalone/silver bracelets and necklaces in Playa del Carmen! Next year, when we're here, Bob wants to eat at the little corner restaurant just down from Don Cafetos on the same side of the street. We couldn't even find a couple of the stores or Charlie's Restaurant from 2 years ago. We then caught a collectivo back to CRT. I will continue later.

12/6 Mon. continued. Tonight we ate out by the beach at the Royal Grill again - great, as before. This time we had room for dessert, and it was good also. Then we made the long walk back to the lobby and bought 2 8 x 10 pictures of us with 2 Mayan Indians, for Playgirl magazine cover for Bob and Playboy for Les. A couple days ago the photographer, whom we had talked to a lot on the beach, took pictures of us with a large (about 5' counting his tail) iguana sitting on Les's shoulders and Bob's head, and we had bought them, on Conde Nest Traveler magazine cover for Bob and National Geographic Adventure magazine cover for Les. When he had first wanted to photograph us on the beach, we had told him no, but Les had mentioned maybe later, if he had an iguana with him. The pictures were not cheap - $20 each for 8 x 10's, but we got the CDs also.
Vendors were in the lobby 3 times while we were at CRT, and a couple days ago Les had bought a .950 silver bracelet with an opal in it for $50. Bob really thought it looked nice on her, even though what first caught her eye was an approximately 3" wide 85% silver, 15% other metal cuff bracelet with a sea turtle on it (this was so if would bend to the wrist and not break - silver was too soft for this large a bracelet). She left the turtle bracelet that time, but it was still there. Because she'd bought from him before, he dropped from $40 down to what she offered - $25! Wow! She could not resist having it also! What a deal! Then we went to the lobby bar for awhile. Les also bought a pair of abalone/silver earrings for $15. He dropped down from $20.
12/7 Tues. Today is sadly our last full day, so we wanted to enjoy the resort. Les swam 35 min. after breakfast, and Bob walked about the same amount of time. Later Les and Judith went snorkeling. Judith was a great swimmer with her fins on, and they went a good portion of the distance out to the snorkel boat, which was in closer again. Judith got cold after about 40 min., and went in, but Les continued snorkeling for an hour total. Judith is from Ottawa, Canada, a lady by herself, probably in her 50s. She's really a good snorkeler, and did not use a snorkel vest, same as Les. The biggest thrill today when snorkeling was, after missing the small stingray on the bottom that Judith saw, Les spotted a huge one 1/2 buried in the sand on the bottom, about 3' across and 4 or more feet long, counting his tail! He was still there after Les got Judith over there, and Les hovered above him for a long time. We finally moved on, and he was still there. We also saw a lot more fish today. The silver vendor came by again. Les bought a silver bracelet with a butterfly on it for our daughter, for Christmas, for $15, and the vendor let her have another great silver bracelet that looked like a wave for $12 - since she'd bought the Mayan silver bracelet from him the other day. We had a couple drinks at the pool bar. Bob worked out later in the workout gym, and Les started her packing for the move tomorrow to our other resort, Catalonia Playa Maroma. This morning we actually ran into a couple Apple representatives in the hotel, Eon (spelling?) and ?, and after we explained what a time we'd had with our transfers, they verified that our transfer was correct for a week from tomorrow from CPM to the airport. Then Les had called one of the taxi drivers she'd gotten off the Internet trip reports and verified $35 to the other resort tomorrow, which was hardly any cheaper than if we'd let the hotel book it - oh well! We ate at the Italian, Toscana, again tonight after most of our packing was done. Les had the same thing she had last time, and, once again, couldn't eat it all. Bob had meatloaf and said it was outstanding. At Toscana, you think because of the small salads and appetizers, you can eat everything, but there are so many courses. The soup and pasta follow the above, and then the main course comes! Wow! Watch out! Your eyes are larger than your stomach! The best time to go to the ala cartes is between 6 and 7 PM. Most people are still getting cleaned up. One thing we didn't discover until tonight (too late) is that what is the morning buffet is divided in two at night. 1/2 of it is Toscana, but the other 1/2 is the International Restaurant, which was not even listed on the map. It must be fairly new - it is included in the A-I also.
Who we thought were outstanding at CRT this year were Lues Bech, our room attendant, Daisy and Beatrice, waitresses, also Miguel from the front desk. Everyone treated us great, though.
12/8 Wed. We got up, did last-minute packing, went to the breakfast buffet up front, and then walked out to the beach to see if the silver guy was there. He was, but was clear down to the south end making sales. We waited about 20 minutes, said goodbye to Judith, and left. Les decided she would swim at the next place since she didn't have much time this morning. She regretted that decision later, not having one last swim in the sea at CRT! We took some last minute pictures, cleared the safe, and called the attendants that helped with luggage. The luggage gentleman arrived with 5 min, and got a free ride to the lobby along with the luggage. We checked out and said goodbye. Our taxi guy, Beto, showed up on time. It was $35 to CPM, just like he said. He showed up in a white van and said we would stop in Puerto Aventuras to pick up his blue Suburban SUV. When we arrived there, and he dropped his other Mexican passenger, we were a little worried when we saw the Suburban - it was kind of beat-up looking. Bob was shaking his head at Les! Thanks goodness we arrived at CPM safely. It was a mile or two back a really rough gravel road. No catching collectivos here unless we get a taxi ride out to the highway.

12/8 Wed. continued. The front of Catalonia Playa Maroma wasn't as impressive looking as CRT. We received a glass of fruit punch and a cold towel, just as in CRT, but when I showed the gentleman our email room request, he said he could get us in building 5, room 5125, with 2 beds, but it would be on the 1st floor. He said possibly in a day or so we could move to a 2nd floor room. On our walk back to our room, we saw several coatimundis (coatis) on the smooth straight sidewalk. They seemed tamer than any we had seen at CRT. They kind of look like raccoons, only with long snouts and long tails. Bob really likes this walkway - smooth instead of rough as it is at CRT. We had so enjoyed our balcony on the 2nd floor at CRT, but decided to go ahead and unpack and stay in Room 5125. Les had read about the air conditioning not being as good at this hotel, and in the beginning, ours seemed pretty good. That was one reason we decided to stay there. Later we found out it wasn't nearly as good as CRT's. If we had been on the 2nd floor, we could have opened the sliding door at night (there was a screen) and let in the cool outside air, but it didn't seem safe on the 1st floor. The other reason Les never wanted 1st floor, even though it was so much easier on her knees than 2nd floor, was that she was worried about more of a bug problem, especially ants. But there was never a problem here. The most she ever saw was a couple ants on the floor once. There was a fairly private patio, you could not see the other patios, only people on the walkway, which wasn't very close. Our room was really close to the pool and the sea, closer than at CRT in building 6. Building 5 kind of backed up to a building at the 1st resort south, which we found out later was Secrets Maroma.
We changed into our swimsuits and headed for the beach. We had seen the pictures of the close together chairs under the slatted roofs, only 1 or 2 palapas, and mostly too young and too small palms for shade. Bob had warned Les about this. She should have listened to him! When we got to the beach the situation was even worse than the pictures showed. The only palapa was for handicapped people, and the chairs were way too crowded and close together. Bob said he wouldn't be spending any time out here. Les said for once we could hang around the pool - better shade and not as crowded. She would just walk out to the beach and swim when she wanted to, even though the beach was a lot wider than CRT's with soft sand on most of it, which is hard for Les to walk in, with her bad knees. We sure couldn't understand why all the Mexicans at CRT who had been to Playa Maroma said that the beach was a lot nicer than CRT's. They evidently had to be saying that because it was broader, but there are no larger palm trees near the water. A lot of young ones are planted, but any larger ones there are way back from the water. In the meantime, they need to put up several palapas. Also, the slatted roofs with white sheets do not provide good shade, and the chairs are way too close together! We were also under the impression, from the trip reports we'd read, that there was only 1 resort to the north and 1 to south, but it looks built up all the way along this coast.
And then came Les's biggest disappointment-a rope all the way across and on the sides, plus they had lifeguards, so Les figured they would yell if she swam beyond the rope. There was no coral, living or dead, as Les entered the sea, but the really weird thing was that the water was not as clear as at CRT, even though there was really no surf. Les swam all the way out to the ropes, which was over your head before you got there, and even out there, it was not as clear. So, here, with no coral, she was hoping for some days of body-surfing waves. This would have been the ideal place for them. On most of our past trips, there were at least a day or so of decent waves. There were also several boats and jet skis running back and forth beyond the ropes, which was not good, meaning it would be more dangerous to swim out there. Even if the sea had been clearer, though, there was really nothing to see here. She saw no coral or fish, even out by the ropes, where it was about 10' deep. It took Les 35 min. to swim 2 round-trips between the north and south ends' ropes.
One good thing about their pool is that it has several places that are 7' deep, so unusual for resort pools these days. It looks like we'll be laying around the pool at one end of a row of chairs instead of on the beach. We ate a late lunch at the Tortuga Snack Bar & Grill near the pool. It is a buffet and is open for lunch until 6 PM. The food was varied and delicious, and was better than the Sorrento Deli & Pizzeria snack bar around the pool at CRT. They had better cheese than CRT, and also ice cream or sherbet with chocolate syrup and nuts. We were here 6 nights, andeven though you did not have to make reservations for the ala cartes, we got 4 restaurant coupons, so we decided to eat at the buffet, Pajarito, near the lobby tonight. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was ok, but we didn't think it was as good as the Tortuga out by the pool.
Les admits she made a bad choice for us with this resort, because we like to snorkel from shore, and also now adults only is really nice for us. Bob has to have shade, and we don't like being crowded with a bunch of other people. Another thing is that it's just like some of the trip reports said, probably 80-85% European, mostly Italians and French, and they don't seem very friendly. There are some Canadians, who were friendly, but very few Americans. But the main reason is that we really like being south of Playa del Carmen, closer to Tulum. We also found out that to get a taxi out to the highway (only a mile or two) was $5 or 50 pesos. That is ridiculous! They really have you trapped here! Bob said that first day that he wished we were home, and Les actually admitted that, for the 1st time ever, she was looking forward to going home. But then we both agreed that we had to make the best of it, and enjoy it. This resort, in our minds, doesn't even compare to the classiness all around of CRT. We don't care what the true ratings are. We would rate this one a 3 and CRT a 5!
12/9 Thurs. Les got up this morning wishing there was some way she could pay a little extra and go back to CRT, but that's impossible with the transportation issue! This is the only time, last night, and this morning, that she was actually wishing it was almost time to go home. This morning Bob took our towels and stuff out and got us the good spot at the end of the row around one side of the pool that had some shade, and with easy entry into the pool. Les skipped swimming in the sea today and swam in the pool twice 30 min. and 15 min. It felt cold going in, and was a lot colder than the sea, but was fine for Les. Plus, we actually got to talk to some non-Europeans, a couple from Quebec, who were sitting next to us. We had skipped breakfast and had lunch at Tortuga, the pool bar - really great again. Bob loves their hamburgers, and Les loves their cheese. We found out later that this is the only restaurant here that has cheese like this.
Bob and Les are both much happier today. Sitting around the pool is going to work ok - Les can just go swim in the sea and come back. She will probably go out beyond the ropes next time. We stayed by the pool until late in the afternoon, taking a beach walk south during this time. The wind had really picked up, and dark clouds moved in. We had some light rain. Les did all her swimming in the pool today because, even with the wind, the waves were not body-surfing waves.
Tonight we went to Toscana, the Italian Restaurant. The salad and soup were good. We each had lasagna for our pasta dish, and it was the best lasagna we've ever had. We then each had steak for our main course, and they were outstanding. The service was even better than the CRT's Italian restaurant, Toscana. Name is the same on them. We felt a little better about things when we turned in tonight. Another thing was that we had decided to go to Playa del Carmen tomorrow to shop, despite the cost-$20 by taxi, or $5 out to highway and catch a collectivo.

12/10 Fri. We ate breakfast 1st in the lobby buffet restaurant, Pajarito, which we didn't think was as good for breakfast as CRT. Bob walked out to be first bend in the road to see if he could get a taxi any cheaper, which he couldn't . So we decided to have the hotel call a taxi for Playa, because by the time you paid $5 out to the highway each way, and then about $3 each way for a collectivo per person, and because where they drop you off in Playa, you either had to walk several extra blocks down to 5th Avenue, or pay a taxi a few dollars to take us to where we wanted to start shopping in Playa, up around 5th & Constitution, the total would come to around $22, not counting the cab in Playa. We got one into Playa to get dropped off where we wanted for 200 pesos, which would only be around $17 each way, if we can get it for that price back -about $34 total, and with the cab in Playa, it would have probably been around $30 or so.We spent about 5 hours walking around Playa shopping. We had the taxi guy drop us at Constitution (about Calle 20)and 5th, then walked north to about Calle 26 and then back south. We stopped and had Margaritas once (2 for 1), and then looked for Carboncitos, Les's favorite Mexican restaurant in Playa. It wasn't where the taxi guy told us, which Les didn't think sounded right. She should have followed her hunch, in the 1st block off of 5th, down near Jaurez, somewhere around Calle 4 to 6.Then, because we needed a break even though neither of us were hungry enough for a full meal each, we stopped at Carboncitos (which was on Calle 4 in the 1st block off of 5th Ave.) and ordered Coke Lights and split an order of a nachos appetizer with pork. It was delicious, and Ana waited on us. She was very nice. While sitting here, we met a lady and her husband. They are living in a condo in Playa for 6 months and are from Canada. When I said how lucky she was, she told me she had 4th stage Ovarian cancer and was terminal. Her attitude was so good, and I felt so bad for her. Bob told her about a friend of ours at home, who had 4th stage lymphoma, was listed as terminal, and who had a stem cell transplant, and is now free of cancer. They said they would check into it. She told us to try Ziggy Beach Club on Tulum Beach, down near the end. After hours of walking again, we finally found the shop. The owner was not there, but the 2 guys remembered Les. She got the one guy down to $90. Being as the necklace was not only Australian opals, but .950 silver, she didn't think she'd get it for any better than that, so bob bought it for her for an early Christmas gift. The guy talked Les into giving him a $5 tip for his coca-cola! We caught a taxi back for 180 pesos and Bob gave him 200 pesos because he had his wife and 1 yr. old baby with him. We stopped at the lobby bar. The coatis were everywhere today.
Later we went to the Grill. Bob had New York Strip, and Les had Rib eye. The steaks came back not done as we ordered them so we sent them back. When they came back, they were done as we wanted, but they had a lot of gristle in them, not nearly as good as at the Grill at CRT. Not only did a black cat come by and beg for food, but a full-size raccoon came by and begged. Les saved some pieces of steak, but we saw neither one later. The other food was OK, but service was not very good. We left no tip tonight. They had vendors there in the lobby and on the walkway, but they had not nearly as much good stuff as CRT. We bought nothing.
12/13 Mon. Our last full day! It was great - while we were still in the room, Eon, our Apple rep., called and verified our departure from CPM tomorrow at 9:50 AM. Les managed to get some sleep last night. We took almost an hour long walk down the beach to the south all the way to the point. Les found a few small shells. When we got back, Les swam in the sea for 1/2 hr. There was a strong current from north to south and large swells, but the green flag was still out, and there were no body surfing waves. It was cool and cloudy today, with a high in the low 70s down to 50 degrees tonight, but some sun. We both wore our new black jackets tonight while sitting at the lobby and eating at the Grill - really cool. That's good - it'll get us a little used to the cold that's there when we get back!
12/14 Tues - Departure day! After doing our last-minute packing Bob walked up front with the baggage guy after he arrived very shortly after we called him. He was also going to check out. Les stayed behind to wait for the jewelry store to open up to see if she could buy the starfish silver ring she's had her eye on, but when it opened up, they would only take pesos so she decided she'd live without it. The Apple transfer to the airport was a few minutes early. We had to stop and pick up some other people. American Airlines had a long line at the airport - it took about an hour. Going through security was easy - we did not even have to take off our shoes or be patted down. Les bought another silver starfish ring at the airport for $32 American, and we filled out a questionnaire on how the airport was now. There were no delays - either here or in Chicago O-Hare, even though a couple days previously there were tons of them. It was 3 above when we arrived in Chicago, and 10 above when we arrived in Indy. We got our Enterprise rental car with no problems and arrived home a little after midnight. Expensive car - $156 with the drop-off fee!
In summary, we love CRT as much as ever and will stay there again, but we don't plan on staying at CPM again, because of the reasons I mentioned above. We have to say, though, that CPM would be great for families with kids because of the calm water, great pool, lifeguards and all the animals. Les still wants to spend 2 or 3 nights on the Tulum beaches and then finish up at CRT or another all-inclusive south of Playa, maybe next year, a 10-day, 9-night trip with the first 2 or 3 nights on the Tulum beaches!

In summary, we love CRT as much as ever and will stay there again, but we not only don't plan on staying at CPM again, but do not plan to stay north of Playa again, unless it is in Cancun. Hopefully, it will be as cool as this year so we won't need the air conditioning! We've got a whole year to research the best place for us! The Tulum.info forum has been and will be so helpful in this search.
