I am going to be alone for the first leg of my trip and would like a few days of serious r 'n r in Tulum for my kickoff. I'm not looking for the absolute spendiest place. I'd prefer adults only, good/great food, bar, comfy bed/room/cabana, beautiful beach and preferably someplace that is not distinctively a couple's respite, although that's not such a biggie.Maybe catering to the late 30's to early 50's clientele. A place where I can be totally quiet or find friendly conversation. I've been reading about so many of the spots in Tulum that my head is totally spinning! I come to all of you for your advice and expertise. TIA

Tough question - I have only been to Tulum once - what would your number one request be?? I was right between Los Lirios & Anna Y Joses - & both resorts were a little larger - more people to mingle with - maybe another single? I think some of the smaller resorts are geared towards romantic getaways - what is your price range??

That is a tough one. Based on your requirements, I'd guide you towards Tita Tulum (eight cabanas that can be very private but would allow for some social interaction if you sought it out) or Zacil Kin or perhaps Mezzanine (four upscale rooms with a tight knit feel). It depends on your price point and what amendities you're looking for.

You usually find more people to socialize with at the northern end of the beachroad..and it truly depends on how much "comfort" you want..if ac is a must, you would be very comfortable at Los Liros..I agree, this is a great place for a solo traveler. I stayed solo at Copal, had a great time, but the beach there is not the wide expanse you find further to the south. The choice for Adults only is a bit limited. Posada Margarita is very comfortable as well. Cabanas LaConchita also..again, not the long wide sandy beach, but on a cove. Will you have a car?
I think there are some hotel rooms at El Parasio, or there were before it became Noddy Beach..and you can't beat the beach here..it is a great place to socialize too..lots of activity.
If Adults only is a must, Mezzanine and Azulik are the only two places I can think of that are AO..a few places have age limits, or don't see many children, but don't advertise as AO in particular.

I almost forgot about La Vita E Bella. It's a bit pricey, but really comfortable and up on the north end, close to El Parasio.

plenty of useful information, but still difficult to make a decision - so many choices. I will not likely have a car, so being able to walk to other properties for meals or whatever is probably my priority...being on the beach....ac is not a must, for sure. Thank you again. Merry merry, everyone!

Without a car..not a problem..ALL the good restaurants in town are a quick cab ride away. No matter where you stay, there are a couple of restaurants that are without walking distance and a few more if you really want to walk the beach for a little while.
Upper price range, I would choose La Vita E Bella, because it is close to Noddy Beach Club and is within walking distance of Nacho's (my favorite beach restaurant) and also has a good restaurant on site.
Midprice range..there are many to choose from here, just a matter of what you really want..I would probably have to go with La Conchitas or Tita..with La Conchitas winning out because it is closer to the north end..and a cheaper cab ride into town...there are so many great restaurants waiting to be enjoyed in town..lots of variety..and the best little bakery in the world..It wouldn't be a trip to Tulum without a visit to Pan Bakery!
Low End..there is no competition: Cabanas Tulum! Good onsite restaurant, clean rooms that are practically in the water..lol..and a truly awesome stretch of beach. There are several restaurants within walking distance.

I think Gale mentioned it in her first post about Copal. It might be a very nice place for you. We have stayed there and it is a nice place assuming you enjoy yoga this would be a wonderful place for you. They have a spa, massage huts overlooking the beach, and Yoga on the beach. Temescal in the Jungel. We paid 60.00 USD per night in June. They have a nice web site with all the details. True the beach is not as wide as places to the south but really how much room do need, the beach was probably 50-75 ft. wide and no rocks they also have hanging beds on the beach beow the beach bar, but just to the North the beach widens out if you need more. Another positive thing about staying there if you are traveling alone is that there are plenty of people there. Both employees and other guests. Chances are the place will be nearly full. They have a resturant on site as well as wireless internet. Just my 2 cents worth. Dave

I couldn't agree more, Dave..Copal was a wonderful place to spend solo time, and meet people. I enjoyed evening conversations at the restaurant bar with people from all over the world. The beach was great, as you said, not huge, but never crowded, and I was there in high season. The cabanas while not luxury, were very comfortable, comfy bed, and you just can' t beat that view of the sunrise in a seaview cabana.
Copal is different, and many expect way too much, but if you are happy with a great view, comfy bed, good restaurant and nice enough beach at a fairly reasonable price..Copal is the place. Maya Spa is there too..Daniel gives the most magnificent massages and healing therapies.
I love this place!

Yogatini, These are from Cabanas Copal, this photo shows the Massage Huts with the yellow openings, Beach Bar in the background, on the beach swinging beds and yes the small beach but right behind me from where I am standing the beach widens out.

Here is the Beach Bar. Just steps from Cabanas 11-16 and overlooks the beach.

I vote for La Conchita - for all reasons except for beach -
If beach is #1 then Hemmingways -
I thought the had great pictures of La Conchita on Tripadvisor - heres one of Hemmingways I took when down there (actually 3 - just hit next)

Okay, I'll give you that! ;) But I REALLY am a 42 yo woman from Oregon with 3 kids who has been married for 20 years (hence, the anniversary trip to Playa/Tulum starting the 9th of January), who hasn't even had a speeding ticket since 1989. If you go to the Playa.info board you can see what I look like by my avatar (just didn't get around to doing it for this board cuz it took me about an hour to figure out how to do it for that board ). The "Felony" name is a long story about a trip to Vegas with friends and we made up fake names to tell people we didn't want to know our real names...

Aw, I'm bummed this thread never finished. Yogatini, where did you decide to go? I went to Hemingway solo last March and really loved it (took me a few days to get comfortable because all the other guests were Italian at the beginning so I was trying to remember Spanish and Italian at the same time!). But the beach is gorgeous and they have fun things to lie on in the sun. But AdGuy just posted that he had a bad meal there at the end of his trip, so maybe Conchita would be a better choice. More things within walking distance, too, but in order to have those day-long beach walks, you'll have to start by walking up the road (to Hemingway, ironically enough) and then cutting through to the water.

I'm staying at La Conchita for three nights and then off to Playa to meet up with friends. I have a feeling that I'll be mighty sad to leave Tulum. Thanks all for the super advice - I'm writing down restaurant tips. BTW, a friend of mine was in Tulum recently and he stayed in a place he vastly enjoyed called Coqui Coqui.

Coqui Coqui definitely looks cool. It's pricey, though.
