View Full Version : Is Tulum always so windy?

Hey folks
Just got back from my 7th trip to the Yucatan! Each time I have popped into Tulum for for at least 1 day sometimes more. It is a beautiful area. Everytime I arrive here though, the wind is howling, the waves are crashing and the sand is blowing.
Now I am definitely no expert on Tulum and have not been here for extended periods but after being here 7 times at various times in the year (Nov,Dec,Jan,Feb,& Mar) I am beginning to think that wind is a permanent feature along this part of the coast and to me is the only letdown.:(

My question is to you long term Tulum people. Does the wind ever let up where you have calm sunny days without all the waves and sand? Have I just been unlucky and picked the wrong days to come here?

Thanks so much

If you just got back, I would venture to say you were in Tulum somewhere between November 16th. and the 22nd. A norte came thru about that time and they can kick up some sand. I can remember one particular time it felt like you were being hit with a sandblaster. I forgot to put the windows on my Jeep and never shut the windows to my cabana. Woke up in the morning with sand dunes on the floor and over an inch of sand in the Jeep. You were just there at the wrong time.

Thanks Steve
Actually I was there Dec 01-03. and although it wasn't as bad as what you just described it is somewhat annoying all day long.

The other 6 times I have been here it was also the same.

I have also been perusing many of the photos here on the site and I notice time and time again peoples hair in disarray, tablecloths half blown off table tops etc which gives me thought that windy may be the way things are here on Tulum beach. To me Tulum is not the place to venture if you sport a combover:D :D

Thanks again

Have to agree with SteveO...just bad timing. :( We were there 12/7-14 and ran into some rain and wind for a straight 48 hours (12/10 and 12/11). This was HIGHLY unusual weather.

Living in Florida, we have our share of beaches. I don't think I've ever been to one where there wasn't enough breeze to move a tablecloth or tossle a hairdo. Wind is always present on a coastline...it helps to keep the clouds moving on and cool ya down when you can't reach the ice chest. :D

Thanks for that confirmation Adguy!

We are coming back again next Nov and although I love the look and feel of Tulum I was a little hesitant about booking and staying there for any length of time if the windy conditions that I have repeatedly come accross was the norm. Glad to hear it isn't and am looking forward to a calm and delightful week on the beach come November.

Thanks again

Ive never noticed the wind, but I hear it blows away all the negative energy that accumulates....It also makes for good surfing!!!!

We were down in Tulum last May. While there were what I would call "breezes" during our visit, it wasn't unduly windy. On the beach you could work up a good sweat, but the breezes made it bearable. I have always found a slight breeze along the coast in May/June timeframe.
