are you talking Tulum? If so there are quite a few up and down main street (307) some cheesey souveniers, some nice jewelry, some other upscale artisan places.

There really isn't just one area that the shops are located. They are all up and down the 307 on both sides of the road. I usually just scout them all and then return to bargain for what I want.

It's not a very long stretch, pretty easy to walk up one side and down the other and get it all covered. Having said that, I really enjoy poking around the Mixic shop (which is down by Charlie's) and the new organic shop and the Mexarte shop that's a bit farther north of that. All are on the west side of the street. Really, though, there are a lot of neat little places all up and down. I kind of like the little hardware store too. :-)

Depends on what you are looking for exactly? I have found most of the touristy shops have items that I can find in Dallas for less money.
I will admit to almost buying a lucha libre mask...pink with a ponytail...at a shop along 307/Tulum Ave. It was awesome!
If you are looking for something unique - Mixik is good. Jewelry from Vincente - his store is the one with crushed rocks on the floor. I'm always looking for Copal and find it at the grocery next to Don Cafeto.

pepper - i keep hearing people talk about copal here. i know it's a kind of mayan incense, right? is that what you use it for or are there different forms of it? just curious!

and lucha libre masks seriously scare me!!!

Yes, it's an incense. I can only find the "stick" version in Tulum. Every now and then you hear people finding the resin, but I've only found the resin in Belize...so I stocked up!!!:D

:wave:Vinciente usually has the resin and also at Copal Maya Spa in their gift shop, I think Maya Tulum has it as well......

Yes, it is tree resin and very sacred to the Mayans as a cleansing and to carry prayers to the gods.....love the smell!!! Been smelling a LOT of it at the Forum of Healers!!!!:star:

And as for the good shops, there are LOADS of them and pretty concentrated, you won´t have any problems, if you take an afternoon to ¨do¨ Tulum you should be able to cover the whole thing.

I think I've told this story before, but we stopped in here on one of our many quests for lime squeezers. We had purchased the "one" squeezer they had in stock the previous year. Our next trip, we stopped again, hoping to find another (we give them away back home as "thank you" souvenirs). We asked in our broken spanish if they had any..The proprietor said, "no...we used to carry them, but we were selling too many...."

speaking of cool stores........ Past Los Árboles Tulum is the town called Macario Gomez then Uh May. just after Macario Gomez there is a store on the north side with a wide selection on Talavera items.
Bonus#1 he gets the best prices B/C the truck does not have to go all the way to Cancun to unload.
Bonus #2 he gets the best stuff off the truck before it heads to Cancun.
you will find everything you could imagine.... The big artistic platter almost always break on the plane so do not attempt, BUT I do have great success with the smaller items like... Piggy Banks for the young Bdays(parents don't mind to teach the kids to save up for their Tulum trips), photo frames(send em home with that special photo in a special frame), and many other goodies...
Tell Rogelio or his wife that Los Árboles Tulum(Mateo) told you about them and he will pass a discount to you. right over there is the Honey Store too and you would be surprised at the cool stuff.
ANOTHER COOL STORE, in Tulum past the Weary Traveler called "Mundo Bebé". It is a local clothing store for special occasions. I finally found good guayaveras for about $270ps. these have polyester and are not all cotton, but that works to your advantage when not in the hot and humid of Tulum b/c the shirt hold up longer and looks better. I only bring this up because I am switching to ALL Guayavera shirts for my closet.

I love these shirts! My grandfather wore them and they are such a traditional and classy look. He was a VERY handsome man. :)

TBPeaceful - its like dressing for a comfortable wedding everyday! I have been in Guayaveras for years. I am 34 years and I work really hard so the extra pockets keep me moving at a fast pace. One pocket for the Iphone, One pocket for the keys, I still got two more without reaching into front jean pockets.
