Looks like my ticket for February isn't good anymore. I applied for a refund but if they don't have any money I doubt I'll get anything back.

Wow, bummer. And such an abrupt message. Hope something works out; it doesn't seem right for people to have purchased tickets and get nothing out of it.

Not to worry Margo..... I'll still be down. It might cost me a little more having to buy drinks on the plane but I'll be there. Can't miss Carnaval on Cozumel.

beachreader...I might be out $143 but going to check with credit card company first. I think they cover something like that. The problem I am having right now is buying a oneway ticket again. The cheap ones are all flying into Cozumel. Normally Cancun is cheaper. I wouldn't mind that if I was storing the Explorer on Cozumel instead of Tulum. Now I have to fly to Cozumel, ferry over to Playa and bus to Tulum to pick up my vehicle then return to Cozumel. It's a long day either way.

Anyway, I'll make it down. I want to be on Cozumel for Carnaval then I think we are planning a road trip to Veracruz. Check it out. It's a really beautiful area with lots to see. Should be good for a ten to twelve day trip.

I had booked through Expedia and bought flight insurance, so I'm getting a full refund. Now to find a new flight to go with that booking at NV...

Sorry for individuals in-conveniences

The real Bummer, is Mexicana shutting down!

It is the oldest airline in North America (1921) and the 3rd oldest in the world!
Its first International flight "from Mexico to the USA" in 1929 was piloted by none other than Charles Lindbergh !

Wouldn't you think they would reorganize and start flying again. I think this may just be short term. Can Mexico really afford to have Mexicana go away?

Here's a link to the Mexicana refund policy & procedures....hopefully EVERYONE will get their $$ back and book another flight!! http://mexicanainforma.com/refund-procedure-us-canada/

Thanks Lynette but have already applied. Went to my bank this morning to file with my credit card company. It's not a lot of money for a one way ticket but it's the point of being out the money for nothing. I bought another vehicle that I want to bring down. I didn't want to bring it down this soon but maybe I'll consider driving down. It's a lot more expensive but much more fun.

I got confirmation of my refund from Expedia in 24 hours and rebooked on Continental out of Newark. I would rather have flown out of a NY airport, but I'm just glad it worked out as well as it did...

Great news!!

I seem to have dredged some info out of my head and I think if a person pays with a CC for their flight, the CC company does not give the airline their money until you actually fly. So, Mexicana does not have anyones money who paid with a CC so it is easily refunded. I think this rule was put into place after so many airlines went bankrupt and everyone lost their $$.

I think for the most part not to many people will get hurt other than the ones in transit. Think of all those poor people out of work

Interesting point, minniemex. That could explain why the big fight I was expecting over my refund never materialized...

Om, it will be a disaster for so many Mexicana employees. There was apparently some hardball being played by the most recent owners of the airline, the pilots and stewards unions and even the Mexican government. Mexicana had low overhead in many ways, but not in personel. I've read that their pilots made about 50% more than pilots on US airlines. Everybody faced off, nobody flinched and pffft! no more airline. I also understand that US security concerns are going to make it very difficult for another Mexican carrier to step in and take over the routes.

A total mess!

I do feel for those people who are now out of work! Not a good place to be. Hopefully, whatever airline takes it place will hire some of these people.
