It's not uncommon to see topless around TDS, but I've never seen total bareness.

I've seen a few bare folks down that way, mostly lying down and covering up when they stand unless they're just going for a swim.

I think it's one of those things where you gauge the environment and then do what you feel.

If there are more people around than you're comfortable with (if, like 10 within a hundred yards is a lot), you'll be very close to the biosphere, so a half-hour walk (or less) will put you in the middle of no one.

Have seen total bareness a bit north and south of TDS, but cannot recall seeing such exactly at TDS. It varies from day to day in terms of the number of folks on the beach there, and their exposure to the sun. As BR mentioned, the Sian Kaan is nearby where there is always empty beach available.

Ok I have to admit, our last trip we were uh, taking advantage of the south beach less people scene there. We were discreet and were not the only ones enjoying it. So in the water and on the beach. No troubles. We walked a ways south in the mornings and always carried something if needed. So if you are discreet about it, watch for the locals, should be no problems.

How about this phrase - which I heard a British guy say while we were having lunch at Las Ranitas one day: "Let's nudify the place!" That's what he actually said.

That would be a real EYE opener if all of a sudden everyone there just said, why not, and clothes started flying. :)

I probably should have mentioned that the rests of the guests at Las Ranitas were not ready to follow the British guy's lead that day.
Don't want to give the wrong impression of the resort.
He and his wife were enjoying their beach mode.
As we all know, there's plenty of beach in Tulum for everyone to find their own place.
