Hi, My husband and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary by heading back to Mexico where we got married (somewhere south of Playa del Carmen).
This time we are heading to Tulum and are very excited. Last time I was in Mexico in Playa del Carmen I had a marguerita and was assured it was made with bagged ice. I found out the hard way not to trust the bartender. I was very very sick for 2 days. I see from these posts and photos that everyone is drinking margueritas and mojitos in Tulum with no worries....is this the case?

Not the ice. Bummer to hear about your illness, but don't fret the ice. The water from the tap sure, but not the ice. Happy Anniversary

The ice is made of clean water comes in big bags and all the hotels and restaurants use it. One person told me years ago, if it has a hole in it then it's safe. I have no idea if this is really true but don't worry. You will be fine!

Ice always gets the blame but is often not the culprit...never really, since it's all produced in an ice plant with purified water.
Remember - they want your business; not to make you sick.

the most common thing foreigners forget is that when we shower, do not wet the inside of your mouth, and when you brush your teeth do not use tap water. When I have gotten tap water in my mouth I make sure to spit for the next five minutes and DO NOT SWALLOW. then I rinse with bottled water and continue to enjoy the day. I told this tip to my Grandmother and her two sisters who had never been out of the USA, and none of them got sick on their first trip to Mexico.
The Riviera Maya is VERY aware that tourists do not return if they get sick, so the area is quite safe. thats not to say that you did not have a ignorant bartender that one time, but generally We do not worry about it as it is an accepted norm to serve good water and ice.

I got sick one time in Tulum and had the runs for most of the trip, with low energy and no appetite. I don't know where I picked it up. After that, someone gave me a special therapeutic grade essential oil blend to put a drop or more in my water as a preventive or to take the minute I felt something amiss in my stomach. Well, when I felt queasy in Mexico and took the oil, the problem went away. Now I use it whenever I feel something wrong in my stomach. It's called Di-Gize. You can find information below. Also, adding Lemon essential oil will purify water, with impurities rising to the surface, and you can drink from the bottom with a straw. Even more...inhaling a blend called Purification will protect you when traveling from the airborne stuff. I see recommendations in my desk reference for mosquito repellent which I am excited to try in April when I go. (Yes, I just scheduled another trip!) Mosquitos LOVE my lower legs and feet when I'm sitting in restaurants! Maybe someone who's going to Tulum soon would like to try the mosquito repellent oil(s) and let us know how it works. In any case, let me know if you want more information.

Maybe Margo can open an infirmary as a side venture. :D Or she might prefer if we prevent ourselves from getting sick, which we vacationers would prefer anyway. :D Another good thing to do is to take a probiotic like "Life 5" for a week before you go, while you're there, and after you come back. The time that I got sick, I had (coincidentally?) forgotten to pack my probiotic, so I didn't have it with me to help prevent or combat the problem.
