So I have read a couple of recent trip reports that have noted that the south end of the Tulum beach is quite windy compared to the north beach. Is this only during the winter/colder months or is it pretty consistent throughout the year?

Thanks!

Tulum is windy most of the time. There are variations to the wind, sometimes like sandblasting but most of the time very enjoyable. During the summer months is when there tends to be less of a breeze.

I'm curious about this too.

Minnimex - would "summer" encompass the typically off season months of May to November or a narrower range?

I would say that it would be a much narrower range. August for sure and I am not sure how far it carrys on either side of it, Margo would have a better sense of it. I would say that it just depends on the weather just like always. I prefer that the wind blows to get my cooling breeze!

I'd say a narrower range, too. Every time I've been in late Oct./early Nov., it has been windy. Usually, like Minnie said, a strong but pleasant wind. Sometimes more of a sandblast. I've only been uncomfortable on the beach for a couple of days during one trip, and that's when it is really nice to have a little patio or deck on your room for hammock lounging!

Sometimes there is a little less wind on the north beach, but not always.

Thank you! I'm all for that cooling breeze, its the sandblast, like you say that I am hoping to avoid! :)

I can testify to August being a great month to catch the ocean being super calm. it was great, downside(if there is one) not much breeze to cool you off. Definately have to stay beach front.

Well it sounds like mid September shouldn't be that bad! :)

I'll hijack CoconutShrimp's thread again to say thanks! I like a breeze too but we've hand sand blasts on both trips so I'm looking to minimize that next time.

When a sandblast does happen, that's when I pack up the car and head up to the north beach, because they do often have somewhat less wind and somewhat calmer waters. But I've only had to do that a few times over the years.

I will say it has been sand blasting the last 2 days on the south beach! Yesterday I put my towel down and prepared to "sunbathe" and within 5 minutes the entire side of my body was covered in sand! I can only say that it probably would have been WAY better if I was on a lounge chair or bed, instead I was level with the sand so that probably did not help matters! Maybe it would have been a good day to head north...

:wave:Wind is a funny thing in Tulum, either people are complaining about it or praying for it! Sometimes on the same day!!! When ever it is windy I always remind people to be careful what they wish for.....the first TIer that I ever met had one of those trips....super windy, bitch and moan, then it stopped....they posted pictures of mosquito bites and left early for a hotel in Playa.....

I have noticed on big energy days, days that big decisions were made or something big happens, the wind usually STOPS suddenly...it is uncanny!:o

Jan, Feb, March, pretty windy.... if you are going to get sandblast winds, it will be in these months...
April May PERFECT
June July Aug Sept, probably pretty calm, but usually SOME breeze
Oct a bit more breeze, might be rainy
Nov, Dec, wind picks up

Hurricane season starts in June and officially ends in November.....

I have never tried the North beach looking for calmer winds, so cant really say if it is less windy...

This last year, the wind was pretty much never totally gone much, we had enough wind to drive away the mosquitoes most of the year...I really enjoyed the summer with the calm water for swimming.:boat:

That's too funny! But probably not much fun for you.

Thanks for the monthly recap on wind expectations. Of course weather can never be relied on but it helps to have an idea. :star:
