I have been doing some surfing on the P.I. board and found this! Just thought it was quite interesting.

The erosion was pretty bad south of Constitutiones Ave last spring....narrow beach and exposed iron shore. I can see why the hotel/restaurant owners are thrilled to have the beach reconstruction project. The million dollar question is how long will it last? I don't think this will be any more permanent than in Cancun. They keep dredging and replacing the beach area, since Wilma. I wonder if they're also going to need some ugly "whales" to hold the sand in.

I believe these pics were taken in front of or near Playa Maya. Not even close to our beautiful Tulum beach!!

Someone had asked on another thread where the sand was coming....I found this on a Royal Resorts web page:

"With two boats now operating round the clock to dredge sand from sandbanks in the waters off Isla Mujeres and Cozumel and pump it onto the Cancun shoreline, restoration work has speeded up."

The beach in Playa is huge compared to 8 months ago. Here is one of my pics taken in front of the Playa Palms webcam last May. It's not the same angle, but notice the sea grapes on the left to get a reference how close the palms are to the water in the pics & on the live web feed.

I am in the process of planning our return trip in May. I just received a response from Playa Maya in Playa del Carmen. (we are planning to spend a few days there before heading home).
He gave me this link to his photo album of the beach work - before, during and after. It's complete (in front of playa maya and that particular area anyways.)

just thought I'd share some first hand pictures...
the beach looks much more inviting now too...
getting super excited to return to Tulum, and now Playa too... especially since we're expecting snow, ice and C.O.L.D. weather this week!!
Planning my return is the only thing helping me through this winter.

I have been following this for a couple months now and basically the sand is being stolen from the conch breeding grounds north of Cozumel. The Volvox Terranova and the Kaishuu are the two ships hired to do the job. It's not good. You can follow the ships here except when they turn off their GPS.

Oh, that's right. I think Steve posted about this a few months ago. What an unbeliveable process.
