Day 4
Up early with the sunrise - take a shorter morning walk, pack all our gear up, we are on our way to Akumal!! My husband has been nervous about driving in Mexico. The first time he ever drove in Mexico we were pulled over by the police inside of 10 minutes of picking up the car, so driving here causes some stress for him, but after a few minutes on 307, he was feeling comfortable. We arrive at Akumal, and are confused by the "Pay for Parking" signs - they are new to us - we have no clue who to pay - this is something I had not read about on the forums--- hmmmm - so we park anyway, go & ask what to do at Turtle Bay Bakery, and were sent to a hut back out in the parking area with a man in it & he said " No problemo - " OK, don't need to be told twice - back to Turtle Bay for breakfast - YUM YUM! A few years ago when we stayed on Half Moon Bay we walked into Turtle Bay every morning for breakfast - just solidified our feelings of contentment to be back again! Ok, done with breakfast - off to Akumal Bay to check out ABR for our trip next April & to snorkel. We rented chairs from Lol Ha & spent the day in and out of the water - saw lots of turtles, some squid like creatures & the school of fish - biggest school we have ever seen!! We believe it has doubled in size since the last time we saw it! The sunshine passed all too quickly, but more was planned for the evening - we drove off to La Buena Vida - our favorite beach bar - had an appetizer platter for dinner that filled us up & yes, I had Sangria again. Second best!! We stayed for a few more drinks then returned to Cabanas Tulum & retired for the night to the sounds not of silence but waves of water putting us to sleep.
Day 5
I hate getting up early at home, but here my eyes pop right open at the first sign of light & I am out on the beach -
Today we are off to Xpu Ha beach & Cafe del Mar for breakfast. This is the place that lost out to Tulum for this trip & after eating breakfast & walking this beach, I am so happy I choose Tulum. The wind has really picked up today, so after our delicious breakfast, we walk the beach down to Xpu Ha Palace & then to Club Maeva ( also in the running for awhile) and back to Cafe del Mar. There really was not anything else to do here, so we left to go back to Akumal to try snorkeling there. We found some palms to park under, & went in the water - as I had said, the wind was horrific & visibility was zero - saw some fuzzy looking turtles & fish & returned to the beach. We tried to sit & read for awhile, but it was sand in the face windy - so we decided to just drive around to different places we had never seen. We drove into Akumal Pueblo & then down to Tulum Pueblo. It was quite interesting to see how these people live on an every day basis. We then drove to the North part of Tulum beach - we found a place to park the car next to Nuddy Beach/Playa Paraiso. We walked north to I believe was Zazil Kin, had a cervesa, & then turned & walked south past Nuddy. It really was like walking thru a sandblasting the wind was so strong that day!! We explored a littke and then we returned to Cabanas Tulum, showered, changed and went out to dinner at Zama's. I have to say this was the most people we had seen in one place our whole trip. Did not have to wait for a table, but it was very crowded. We were not real hungry so split a calzone & some bruscetta - both were very good! I just had a glass of red wine - no sangria http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/02.gif We returned home to retire for the evening & to the sounds of the sea.
