I'm planning on heading to Tulum september 30th - October 4th.
I hear this is hurricane season... what are my chances of bad weather? 50/50 or worse?
I was there 3 years for a few days around the 16th of september and the weather was perfect.
Am I insane going at the end if sept?
Thanks in advance,
Trev

There is really no telling. Mother Nature is wholly unpredictable, though it's been a very quiet year so far. If you go, be sure to get trip insurance just in case.

I don't think it's insane to go to Tulum anytime unless a storm is already headed in that direction. For any given date, the chances of a hurricane are very small, I would say. Plus, it seems like most of them start as a tropical depression off the coast of Africa and take several days to make it to the Caribbean, so for peace of mind, you could check for any activity on weather.com before you go. If one did end up heading for the Yucatan peninsula, you would just head inland. :-) I had all of this in mind when I went in early September.

Not crazy at all! But I would buy trip insurance anyway.
Here's a great site, the National Hurricane Center; I love clicking on it every now and then and just checking out whatever storms might be out there, Atlantic and Pacific.

I have to agree that the weather is unpredictable!! You just take your chances and like everyone is saying, buy the insurance if you don't want to take a chance. I have never bought insurance and have been just fine.

Just do it!!!! :) I would suggest the trip insurance, though. I've had to file claims twice (Ivan & Wilma) for hurricane interrupt-us, and received full refunds to return at another time. For us, trip insurance for any reason, is an inexpensive investment for "just in case"!

Things have been great. A bit of storm and rain but there is great energy in them. Every moment in Tulum is a great one. And at least the water that falls from the sky feels great.
And we have Margo talking to the powers that be and she is the most powerful gringa in Mexico.

Hope I don't jinx it here, but the Caribbean has been awfully quiet this year. More storms in the Pacific due to the El Nino developing. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!
Cheers,

Go for it!!! Get insurance if that makes you sleep better at night. We went down right after Wilma. (We were booked before the hurricane hit) The airline told us we had 1 year to re-book and then the property we had booked that had to cancel us gave us 18 months to use the credit (Loco Gringo)/Akumal/Luna Azul. Everything worked out great. We postponed our trip a couple of weeks and went!! We were pretty much some of the first tourists into Cancun after Wilma. It was amazing seeing the hurricane damage. We ended up finding a place on line that was open and stayed there...the next year we went to our original booking place with no added charges. I would ask the people you are booking with what their policy is for hurricanes. I would think that the ones on the up and up would do the same or similar to what happened with us during Wilma

Laura, you stayed at Suenos that year! Because that's when Kevin and I were there too -- I guess we must have been the second set of tourists let back in. :D
Actually, pretty amazing... there were a bunch of folks at Suenos and it felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. There was a couple from Connecticut (nutmegstater over on LG), and then a few days into the stay a young couple from San Francisco showed up. And there was a couple from Iowa too for part of the time we were there.
I think Suenos was one of the first to open back up again, although in general Tulum hadn't been hit that hard. I remember eating at Amansala that first night and there was no one around. It was awsome.

Went to Xcaret, and they have the prehistoric rain dance every day at 5pm!!!!!
Really didn't expect to enjoy Xcaret, but really really enjoyed the shows........the evening dinner show is SO worth it! :eat-drink:
Thanks Serenity for taking me along with your sister and her family!!!!! :beerchug:

We were lucky to have been able to find Suenos...and only did because of the research via the internet. There was NO WAY we were going to be stopped by Wilma!.It was very humbling seeing all of the devastation, how people were living after having their homes destroyed and seeing just how much work was going on to rebuild it all.
