I went to TA and read the post..not much there to read really..all I can say is that bad things can happen anywhere..even in Paradise..the Riviera Maya from Cancun to Tulum continues to be a VERY safe place to visit..but one must take precautions to ensure safety, as you would do at home..never assume that a place is 100% crime free..there is no such place.
It will be interesting to hear the entire story.

You're right, Gale. It's possible to run into problems anywhere but the probability is very low in this area if you're even a bit aware of where you are and what you're doing. Think about how many folks visit the area and how few reports you hear. That said, it's still worth remembering that no area is 100% immune to bad things happening.

Hearing of this type of thing is actually encouraging..because it happens so rarely...this type of thing is not something that one should expect when visiting Tulum. This kind of thing is in our local newspaper all the time..I feel safer in Tulum than I do in my own hometown, always have and that has not changed because of the very few incidents we have heard about in the last year or so.
I do think that as the RM grows in popularity and population, with all the new resorts that are being planned for and built, comes alot of new employees from other places, all seeking work, and not all of them will be "good" people. It is just another side effect of a small secluded place becoming a much desired resort destination suffering from serious growing pains.
I wouldn't let a report of this kind stop me from visiting and enjoying Tulum. Just use good judgement and common sense about personal safety as anyone should.

You said it perfectly, Gale. Though maybe I'll add another set of reps to my weightlifting routine! :D
