Nice place right next to Cabanas La Luna, the rental house/s Tortuguita and Limon on the south side. Haven't stayed there, have had two recent dinners there. Really good margaritas, dinner food ranged from pretty good to OK to disappointing (the arrachera in April was really not good). Still, very cool beachfront bar areas, kind of lounge-y but doesn't make you feel like you need to be a hipster to hang there.
Haven't slept there, though, I'll leave that commentary to those who have. It's often on my lists, but I never end up there. I'm not real big on the idea of swing beds; I like my beds to stand still when I roll around!

Thanks, the swing beds are kind of funky..On their web site: 95.00 plus tax for ANY room there until the end of year, Except some days in July.

Holy cow, until the end of the year, really? Wow! I would definitely see which room you can actually book for that rate. If you can book an oceanfront in either the first or second levels, that would be cool (assuming you like swing beds). If they make you wait until you show up and take whatever they have left, not so cool.
The third-story beachfront rooms are kind of odd; they charge full price but it looks to me like you have a slanted attic-like roof over your head.
But wow, $95, hard to resist. Do they include taxes (and breakfast?) in that rate?

Just wondering which room is the BEST
A room in one of the 2 identical brown bldgs- they are oceanfront, with 3 floors each, one room per floor. I liked the middle floor room- top floor rooms in these two bldgs are better for one person, but very cute & breezy.

So, with taxes, it's $106.40, sounds like no breakfast either. Still a great deal, no question about it, but I'd probably look at other places too.
I think that Hechizo de Luna room with the tub is pretty great, and you'll have good neighbors, of course. :p
Playa Mambo's beachfront rooms are I think $120-$135 (low season list price, taxes and brekkie included), if you're looking for other places to check out. Best pics are in Lazydog's last trip report (titled something like phantom topes and tacos or something like that).

Excuses me, but what do you mean by eurotrash?

I stayed at Zulum in one of the front buildings, middle floor. I absolutely loved the swinging beds. It was like going to bed every night on a swing. I would return for that price!!

My apologies, Monique, no offense intended to regular Europeans.
"Eurotrash" is a term which indicates a certain type of European tourist who are insufferably cool and fashion-addicted, hipper and trendier than the rest of the universe, and congregate in places with thumping techno music where they exude their coolness in unwelcoming ways. They don't even really have to be European; plenty of American, South American, African and Asian eurotrash in the world. There are quite a few definitions of the term on Google, this is just mine.
I could go on, but please know that this term is in NO WAY meant to slam all Europeans, simply this one group/type of person who fits the description. I'm sure you know a few choice defamatory terms about certain classes of American tourist as well. :)
Seriously, it's a joke. However, in an effort to avoid any misunderstandings for those who aren't familiar with the term, I have edited my original post to delete the word.

I stayed in Zulum back in February and really liked it!!! I had been worried about the swinging beds, but ended up loving them!! Service was great!! The Margaritas were some of the best I had in Tulum and I thought the food was fantastic!! I would definitely stay there again!!!

I did not feel offended just surprised. I think the people you describe don't go to Tulum, I have never seen them there, but that is just my opinion.
But saying that: Tulum is changing. When I stayed in Tulum for the first time (10 years ago, stayed in Tulum in 4 different years) there were hardly any Americans there, just a lot of backpacking Europeans. Last time it felt like there were more Americans than Europeans there.
I think it is a pity that the prices have risen so much in the last 5 years and I also think that is why Europeans (who usually don't want to spend so much on a hotel) are staying away.

Ah, but you see, now that Tulum is trendy (and expensive), that's where the e-trash come in. Several places in Tulum now play techno music and are making efforts to attract that crowd.
Not talking about backpackers at all, more the rich crowd.

I was so close to using their spa at my last trip. Anyone used their spa services? Any deals to be had at the spas right now?

I think there are some places that are consistant with spa services (Azulik & Copal, Maya Tulum, Ana y Joses). Other places use therapists that bring their own beds and do it on location. This is the type I had at Zulum and loved every minute getting my massage on the beach.
