Here's me breaking that nasty lurking habbit I've always had:o ...I've been reading this forum for a few days and really felt the need to let you all know how much I appreciate all of the pictures and useful information. This will be my first time going to Tulum (Jan. 4 - 11) and I'm already obsessed with the place!....some of the pictures posted here have taken my breath away and then had me aching to be there. I'm looking forward to making a contribution with respect to posting pics...although I'm probably not as 'camera savvy' as most of the travellers on this forum.

Welcome and dont hesitate to ask any questions. All who post have either been there several times or like yourself have a trip planned and wanting further info. Any photos you post will be be great. Just click away, its all good in Tulum cant be a bad photograph. Look through the archives below you will find many photos of the area. I have about 300 of just the Tulum area from our 3 trips. Dave

Hi Monica,

Welcome to the forum, "lurker no more". We've only been to Tulum one time, last May, but we are hooked. I've found its easy to take pix with a camera that does all the work for me, since I am no pro at photography.

And it is correct, there can be no bad picture of Tulum. The place is just that beautiful!

Enjoy your trip. I'll look forward to your pictures and report.

Welcome to the forum Monica! You'll have a great time when you go.

Packing tip: if you're staying on the beach or near the tribal village, pack a small LED flashlight. You can buy ones that clip onto a cap. Gets very dark at night down the beach road.

If you see these guys, don't worry. They are your amigos.

Thanks for the friendly Welcome....I'm still trying to dig up some old pictures from the archives ! Great pic of the 3 'amigos', by the way.

We won't be staying at the tribal village but after reading this forum I really wish we were. We're actually staying at the Dreams resort (cause we're pansies) thinking it would be best for our 3 year old - it's his first trip outside of Ontario and I wonder if his little system can handle the Mexican fare.:) If all goes well, we'll most likely look at the tribal village further down the road....cause I know that's where the real fun is !;)

Just starting the planning for a May 2007 Tulum visit..I am stunned at the price increases from early 2005! We would love to return to Copal, but there is no way I am going to pay the price for a seaview cabana..so now, I am economy shopping.. for rooms.

Monica..you don't hear much mentioned about Tribal Village..but this is one place I fell in love with when I was in Tulum a couple of years ago..if you go by there, could you check out the current prices for me and maybe get a couple of pictures? Can't find their website anymore, guess they are no longer with a webpage.

I myself would be happy with a cabana in the sand, but the girl coming with me insists on at least having concrete beneath her feet..lol! The seaview cabanas at Copal were perfect for us..we don't mind rustic, just want to be close to the water..like almost in it! Anywhere you find that has a decent restaurant and bar..Right now, it looks like we will be returning to Cabanas Tulum..one of my favorite spots.

Have a great time on your trip! You picked a great week to go...my very first Tulum visit was January 7th-14th..the weather was perfect..low humidity with warm sunny days..and cool nights perfect for sleeping with a blanket!

Yes, Tulum is going to start getting pricier. We too were at Copal last May, and I saw their price increases. We won't stay there again, not because of prices, but for other reasons. The new prices just enhanced our decision.

The good news is that I just booked a cabana at Tita Tulum for next May and have Pay Pal'd two nights deposit to confirm! I cannot wait. We also just did major renovations to the house on credit card and can use the miles to fly free. Life is lookin' good.

We hope to get as much enjoyment out of sleepy little Tulum as we can right now, as change is coming.

Hi Gayle,

I will definately be looking for the tribal village so I'd be glad to share whatever info. I can find. I just need to make sure that 'the tribal village' is the name it is known by...I figure I can just ask the taxi driver to take us there for a day trip - right ? I'm guessing it's located somewhere between the Dreams resort and the ruins - If I'm wrong please let me know. Sorry I'm not more up on the area...I've only just started researching tulum (I picked it for the Dreams resort children's program).

Tribal Village is/was the first place to the south of the split in Coba Rd and the Beach Rd. I would guestimate..terrible with distances here, that it is about 5 miles or so south of Dreams. Dreams is technically in Tankah, not Tulum, but it is not far away either. After you pass the Ruins entrance on 307, turn left at the first stoplight. This is Coba Rd. It will deadend into the beachroad..turn Right and it is the first place on the left, between the road and the beach.

Here's a map to help you get oriented with the Tulum area..Dreams is just to the north, not shown on this map. I am a bit concerned that this map doesn't show Tribal Village..I am afraid they are gone. They would be right before Papaya Playa.

Welcome Monica!

Glad you appeared from the other side of the monitor! :D Tulum is an amazing place that I know you and your family will fall in love with. Feel free to ask questions as the folks on this site are very knowledgeable and helpful.

The more you get involved, the better planning you'll be able to do! :)

I think I'm to blame for some confusion here. All the little maps and tourist info that you collect while on vacation refer to the area around Posada del Sol/Zhara/Piedra Escondida as the "Tribal Village". It's nothing more than a couple craft shops, a convenience store, couple of restaurants and the bar a Zhara. There's no hotel that I know of by the same name.

Sorry for the confusion. :o

aha, that explains it. Tribal Village was/is not a hotel, it is a cabana on the beach place, similar to Copal or Papaya Playa. It was there in Jan. 2005, but I am wondering if the property was purchased by Karisma when they started building Azul.

This place is rustic, very rustic, but it was clean and peaceful.
I finally found a couple of pictures on the web. I really hope it is still there, and has not been swallowed up by some big developement company

This is the place that has the outdoor bathroom on several of the cabanas. Outdoors means just that the walls are about 3 ft. tall, so at least when you sit down there is sort of privacy. Shower though all open, they did have some jungle brush kind of around it but pretty much in open view. I found a website at one time about this place, but on our recent trip we did not stop in to see it. I will try to find further info. on this place. It is or was located north of Copal and Papaya Playa, its the first place on the left after you make the right fork headed south.
