You can jump on at 7/11 on 307 I think. Pollo Bronco would be a good simple chicken place close by.

They also stop at the north end of town (but going South bound) at the San Francisco grocery store parking lot and then across the street from the SF going north bound... couple of taco stands within walkin' distance if I am not mistaken.
plus the SF has a good deli with hot food items as well as some good sandwhich's and pasta salads, tables and chairs set up in the deli to enjoy them. Made a great snack place for us as we headed to the beach - cheap too!

Is there a stop farther south in town, maybe on the south end? Many more restaurants down that way.
I mean, the north end stops (San Fran and 7/11) are great if you're then grabbing a cab and heading out to the beach, but if the restaurants are the goal, then I'd want to be dropped more in town.

yeah.. what i was wanted to do is hit the ruins early..then hang out at
zazil-kin for a while (hope it's still there). then walk down the beach a bit and catch a cab to tulum. hang out there for a while and then colectivo back.. i was hopin' the colectivo station was in town somewhere.
would takin' the bus back from tulum be better? where is the bus station?
thanks again.. wanted to hang out at zazil - kin since i seen a picture posted on this forum...

Depends Zep. Are you staying in Akumal? The bus doesn't stop in Akumal. If you are in PDC you can definitely take the bus but I think the colectivos run more frequently.

Ya know Zep -
While there may be an "official stop" in the Pueblo, you can just get out to the median and flag down any collectivo heading in your direction. I've done this and seen it done. Don't know if it's bad etiquette, but the whole gist of the collectivo seems to be flexibility, and I was just goin' with the vibe.
So eat where you want, flag down a white van, and you're on your way.

yeah,, i'm stayin' in PDC. Goin with a bunch of friends and family and they're into the all-inclusive thing.. i'm just a little more adventuresome..they warned me against colectivos and buses and the like... but if you want to really get into what a country is like you got to hit the local places and take local transport (a least that's what i think)..
I want to hit akumal one day (thanks for your advice on that btw).. and then tulum another day. maybe cozumel one day but that seems a little too touristy. i wish there was an easy way to get to Coba from PDC but i'm having trouble finding a public transport way.. as you can tell i'm a 'no-tour' kinda guy..(cheap)..hehe

You sound a lot like me. I love the public forms of transportation and never end up paying as much as I would if I rented a car. Tell your friends they are missing out.

Zep, you're our kind of people!
You can take the bus down from PDC to Tulum, and then there's another bus out to Coba from the Tulum bus station (that's my understanding, anyway, I haven't done it myself).
You can take the colectivo from PDC to Tulum, or you can take the bus to Tulum (more comfortable, air-conditioned, etc.) and then experience the colectivo on your trip to Akumal. It will drop you off at the highway and you'll have to hoof it down a long hot road, or you can hitch a ride into Akumal or there might be taxis hanging out.
I haven't been to Cozumel in a long time, but I believe the windward side is still pretty untouristy. You can probably talk your friends into that one, and they can stay on the west side and you can hire a cab and just head out, trying different bars and stuff along the way. SteveO is our Coz expert, check out some of his posts.
I love that your friends "warned" you about colectivos and buses. Do any of them actually have any experience in such things, or were they warning you based on something they heard once upon a time? I have friends like that. Think I'm crazy sometimes for doing what I do.

oh yeah... i told them of my public trans plans and they gave me wierd looks. when they venture off the resort is usually as part of a tour package. i took a colectivo years ago from the tulum ruins back to pdc and when i got back they said...'we didn't think we'd ever see you again!!'. hehheehheh
i checked out some coz stuff and someone said there is actually a colectivo that runs on the road that goes right there the middle of the island. i'll have to check that out....
I really don't see how i traveled before without these forums.. people are just great here....

I remember I used to spend hours at my local B&N poring over travel guides and then not buying them. I planned out many a trip that way, faxing reservations letters to hotels but otherwise not knowing anything about a place other than what I read in the the books.
Amazing, isn't it?

Can i get from the beach resorts in tulum to town on a colectivo? Is it possible to flag a cab? I would like to avoid renting a car for teh whole time.

They don't yet have colectivo service to/from the beach road area, though I would imagine it's coming someday soon. You can definitely flag taxis, more or less easily depending on where you are on the road. Some areas, like the beachtown area or the parking lot at El Paraiso (perhaps not if that's now closed), you'll find cabs just hanging around for the asking. If you're all the way south, they might be a bit more scarce.
You said you don't want to rent a car for the whole time, but are you planning on renting a car for part of the time? I've found that a few days of local renting can amount to the same as a whole week booked in advance and picked up a the airport. Well, maybe not the same, but the difference was close enough to make me realize it was worth renting the whole time. That's just me, though, I know many people work the taxi thing really well.
