THANKS to everyone who has taken the time to reply to my posts and to all who contribute to this great forum! I have never visited tulum before, and after Cancun last March, was looking for something more authentic. I am now convinced I made the right choice, and even though I chickened out and picked an AI, (Freedom Paradise) I am just stoked about our trip in March. Next time I will go one step farther and do the cabana thing! All of your posts and info have been invaluable, please keep up the great posts and pics! Lianne (112 days and counting.......)

Lianne - welcome to the board:) It has taken me years to go this far south - doing what you are comfortable with is the right choice - you will enjoy your vacation & the anticipation of it more this way! Check out the Tulum cabanas when there and see if it really is for you!! I will have pictures in 2 weeks, keep checking back in!

Nothing to be embarrassed about! :o You'll have a very nice base camp to explore from!!! Besides, most folks in the world never leave their backyard...you're heading to Tulum!!!! I think St. Augustine said it best:
"The world is a book, of which those who stay in one place read only one page."
In no time at all you'll be turning the page!!! :)

Well you could always cancel the AI and stay at one of the many Cabana sights. Another thing you could do is grab a couple of things in a small bag and hit the beach in Tulum and explore a the places to stay while you're stolling the beach and if the desire hits you stay a few days in a cabana while the rest of of your belongings are back at the AI. We never spend over $35 a night when we stay at Zazil Kin. Just an idea. Jessie and I (I'm James) have yet to visit Akumel and our next time around we're planning on leaving most of our stuff in a hotel in Playa and seeing whether or not a day trip turns into a fews nights stay there.

I have always wanted to stay at Freedom Paradise..not an AI person, but it seems so quiet and laid back, it would be the perfect AI for me. I hear there is GREAT snorkeling there..the reef is supposed to be quite close in to the shore, with a maximum depth in the bay of about 10-12 ft..perfect!
Don't forget to give us a trip report..we don't often get too much info on Maya Tankah..Freedom Paradise!
