My husband and I are staying at Club Maeva Tulum at the end of November but we want to spend a day or afternoon at the beach in Tulum. We're planning on taking the collectivo to Tulum pueblo and then a taxi to the beach...where should we be dropped off to start exploring Tulum beach? We're hoping to lounge on the beach, have some drinks and wander around.

Welcome marYsol!! You'll love the beaches of Tulum. Many folks head to El Paraiso and relax at the beach club there (Nuddy's). They rent beach beds and umbrellas and offer food and drink...

Also, just to the north there's a great little beach bar in front of Zazil Kin (a five-minute walk north from El Paraiso towards the ruins)...

As for the collectivo driver, tell them you want let out at the Super San Francisco in Tulum. You'll be at the intersection of Highway 307 (the main road between Tulum and Cancun) and the Coba Highway. Grab a taxi to take you from there to the beach resorts. It will probably run you $3-5 depending on where you want to go to.
Enjoy!

Kwik question - is Zazil Kin cheaper on their drinks & food than Nuddy?? How do the food & drinks at both compare?? (taste, etc..........)

Another alternative, just in case you prefer a less crowded scene, would be to have the taxi drop you off toward one of the more southern beach hotels. You can access the southern portion of the beach, and by southern I mean just across the "bridge" south of Zamas, around by Maya Tulum or Hemingways or even Posada Margherita/Kin Ha. From there you can walk south along the beautiful stretch of beach and stop in at any of the little boutique beach hotels for a beverage.
We stayed at Copal, but didn't like the beach, so most days we walked south and spread a blanket out in front of Kin Ha. We walked the entire beach one day stopping in for breakfast at Tita Tulum, and lunch at Las Ranitas. There are plenty of places to eat or get drinks.
PS - Based on our "pop in" breakfast, I have just confirmed our reservations for Tita Tulum for next May. I have a long wait ahead of me but it will be worth it.

Thank you for all the great suggestions! So helpful!:) I'm looking forward to exploring the area!
A couple of years ago on our honeymoon we did a day trip to Sian Ka'an with CESiak. It was amazing! On the drive down the beaches and hotels/cabanas in Tulum looked so beautiful. We're staying an AI this time because we got a great deal and airfare from Canada to Cancun is usually just too expensive on its own. Hopefully we can take advantage of a seat sale one year and be a bit more adventurous.

Some "last-minute" planning, huh minniemex? :D The beach bar at Nuddy's is expensive...especially when you consider you pay $10/bed rental on top of food and drink prices. They use to include two free drinks with the bed rental but stopped that around May.
Understand that the Zazil Kin beach bar is more "rustic" and does not offer the food selections as the bigger hotels or beach clubs. Their menu when we were last there at the end of June 06 was:

We only had chips and guacamole (plus a couple beers). I think beers were 20 pesos each (about $1.80USD) but they were cold and the folks running the place were charming. The guacamole was great...

The best advice I can give is to stop at several spots and try for yourself...you can always turn around if it's not what you're looking for!
Have a great trip!!

Actually all you have to do to get more of a selection for food at Zazil Kin is walk up to the main restaurant toward the road. The food ain't 5star or anything, but I like it and the prices aren't too shabby. I loive the way they have everything set up there. It's nice and layed back.
