Calakmul is located in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the state of Campeche. Home to over 350 species of birds, other wildlife, and the largest population of jaguar in this part of the world. The turn off to the ruins is about an hour drive from Bacalar. It takes about another hour, down a two lane road that eventually turns into a winding one lane road, to reach the ruins. I can practically guarantee that you will be the only tourists there. It's reported to be the largest site in Mexico and also has the tallest structure in the Yucatan Penninsula. Lots of wildlife to be seen on the trip. To see all the areas takes a minimum of 4 hours. Lots of walking and no tour guides.

Here is a wild Tepescuintle (Paca) running down a path. Many people sell roasted ones along Hwy. 307 between Felipe Carrillo and Limones.
