Hi all!
My DH and I are coming to the Maya Riviera in May for our 10th anniversary and just can't wait. We're a bit older (55 and 58) but have never been outside of the country and never done a "fancy" vacation - we usually camp and canoe or get a cabin in a State Park :) So we decided it was time to experience something new!
We're going to start out with 3 days in Tulum at the Hotel Posada 06 (were going for the Posada Luna Del Sur but Loco Gringo doesn't book them so switched) for the local flavor, then to Akumal Beach Resort for 5 days as we've heard the beach there is amazing and I'm learning to snorkel so wanted a gentler area. Then on to the Barcelo for 5 days for the "big resort" experience and the All Inclusive.
What do you think?
Our two biggest worries are the driving (DH wants to rent a car) and the food (Montezuma's Revenge - we don't want to experience that!)
Any suggestions for us? Thanks for being here :) We did get the list of restaurants in the Tulum thread - just worried about the food being safe. It all sounds yummy!
Thanks, Meenie :D

It sounds like you have a wonderful 1st trip planned!! You will get a taste of all the coast has to offer!! Laid back Tulum, ABR in Akumal (a favorite of mine) and the BIG AI. You will defintely know where your tastes fit in when you are done!!
I answered your question about "revenge" over on the restaurant thread and I am sure others will have their experiences to share with you. I really wouldn't worry about the food or anything else. Just go and have a great time!!
About the driving ~ not as bad as we make it out to be!! Just follow the speed limits and you will be fine!! We just like to keep everyone informed as to what to expect!!
There is a "general" section of this forum ~

Thanks for the great welcome, MinnieMex!
My hubby is confident about driving, I'm a weeeee little apprehensive because I've heard some negatives. I have a co-worker who loves Mexico and she says "don't drive, the natives drive crazy - it's a two lane hwy and they make it into a 5 lane hwy," lol. But it does seem sensible to drive as we'd rather do a lot of things on our own rather than part of a tour. DH has a bad back so doesn't want to be stuck with a tour's timing. With a car, if his back gets too bad, we can go back to our room.
The food is really more of a concern to me - that wouldn't be a happy way to spend our vacation! :) But I hear it's become much less of a problem, especially in the resorts, so Tulum is the biggest concern - but we are looking forward to experiencing it.
Just hoping to find info on places to avoid :)
Thanks, Meenie

I also responded to your post on the Restaurant thread, so I won't repeat that here, but I just wanted to say welcome.
My only quibble with your itinerary is that while I'm sure Posada 06 is a cool place, you won't be staying on the beautiful Tulum beach. The Tulum beach is far superior to the beach in Akumal (IMHO), though the snorkeling is far superior in Akumal.
I would personally shift your trip to more time in Tulum, and to stay on the Tulum beach. It sounds like you're already booked everywhere, though, so it may be too late until next time.
I've been to the Barcelo Maya a few years ago and I liked it for an AI, had a really nice beach then too, with some surprisingly good snorkeling right on site off their dock area. But since then they've opened a whole new resort, at least doubling the size, and I would worry that the beach area would be seriously overcrowded.
Still, as Minnie said you're really getting a wide range of experiences, and that's a good thing. Since you're campers, I just think you'll prefer the Tulum end of things, and if there's any way to switch to staying on the beach, you'll really "get it". Not that it's camping, just that with that background, you'll really see the value there.
But if you do stay at Posada 06, hopefully you'll spend some time out on the Tulum beach anyway, and just walking up and down that beautiful beach you'll see the places I'm talking about and it'll get you excited for your next trip!

Thanks Beachreader,
I have heard that the beach in Tulum is spectacular and we plan to visit the beach after we go to the Ruins. :)
Actually we chose the Posada 06 because of it's low price, it's AC and it had good reviews. We wanted to find a low price so we could stretch our stay out just a little more :) And we wanted to stay in Tulum a couple of days while we visited things near there to spare my hubby's back as much as possible. If he starts hurting too much we can come back to the room and chill.
Do you know if the hotel is close to a shopping area? So if he's napping I can slip out and browse, lol :)
