Odd that they say "five hotels", but they list Nacho's and Mayan Grill as though they were two different places, also Diamante is Diamante K, so since Mayan Grill was already closed, have they really only closed Diamante K and Mezzanine?
Can someone who's down there either now or soon please check this out on the ground?
What about La Vita e Bella, El Paraiso and the others closer to the ruins?
Do you think they're just hitting Mezz and K because those two owners have been the most vociferous in their objections? Maybe they're just pushing for another payment?

Might want to start a new thread so folks there now notice it. Rockgeek is there now, and so is Jeanne. Looks like Solman is heading down soon, but going to Mahahual. I'm sure there are a few folks there that didn't put their info on the calendar, too....

I will be there Sunday night and will post info on Monday if no one has found out by then. It's really strange, Areo Mexico just bumped my flight to a later one on Sunday(never had that happen). My father-n-law who lives in Cozumel 6 months a year called and told me there are army roadblocks all the way from Cancun airport to Tulum. He said to expect 2 1/2 hour delays at some while they search cars with dogs.
We were in Tulum/Tankah seven times last year and numerous times over the past 5yrs and have never had any problems, but I'm a little worried. I quess killing General Tello messed things up for everyone.

Here's an article I found concerning the military.

Hi everyone:wave:...........I don't know what to say...........my instinct is that it isn't true, but this is Mexico so who knows.:burp::eek:
I can say that I just spent the Tuesday and Wednesday night at Casa de los Palmas which is next to La Zebra and nothing had occured at that point. I left town about 5 pm Thursday and was around people that would know and would say and nothing was said.....that said, the article says that it happened Thursday.
I just tried to call some people and didn't get through, but will keep trying, but the electricity is about to go off here in Punta Allen so won't be able to communicate again til it comes back on at 5pm! That's how I know when siesta time starts and stops!!!:palmtree::p:palmtree: (see there's that hammock smiley need again!
I will be moving to Tulum on March 15th but in the mean time, I rarely leave Serenidad Shardon here in Punta Allen except to go out in a boat! :boat:
Lets focus on what we want, which is for the good guys to win!! And for Mayan Grille to re open!!!!!!!!
Peace,
M

Thanks, Margo, please let us know when you hear anything.
For the rest of us, perhaps we can keep this thread separate from the whole Cancun violence thing please?
There is another thread where we can discuss that.

I have friends there now too -- first trip for both --- staying at Azulik. Unfortunately, they don't read the TI board. I'll try calling them.

Seems like they're planning something for the north beach...that with the airport coming in...greed always comes into play...must be some serious money coming and a huge resort...sad.

I saw that the actor that owns a couple of the places that were closed said he had a legal injunction to stay open. Who knows, they may get around it some how. I hope so, I was really counting on Mezzanine for dinner next Friday. Oh, I also heard the Army pulled out Wed. No roadblocks and new female Police Chief in Cancun.

I just got an email from some friends that just mentioned that they went to Mezzanine to a great party on Friday night, I had not talked to her ahead of time, so she didn't know about this rumor.........
And btw, there has been some HOT music in town lately....:beerchug:

This seems to be all that's left of those plans:

I heard somewhere along the line that they went bankrupt, but then again they bought Ikal del Mar up in Xcalacoco, so the two of those things don't quite fit. At any rate, it seems to be kaput in Tulum for the moment. :crossfingers:

Yes Mezzanine was open last Friday...
On our way to and from Cancun (2/12, 2/22) there were just a few police checkpoints... maybe one army checkpoint near Cancun. We did notice the Mexican Marines milling about and setting up and taking down a checkpoint on the road to the beach just above where it T's with the beach road. No idea what was going on... the checkpoint was never active when we went by.

Yes it was still open. People told me that everyone was just going under the red tape that was put up. We did not see any tape when we were there, everything seemed normal. I will say that the number of people in Tulum seemed way down from the last few times we were there. We liked it better.

Hola everyone! We just got back from Tulum last night, and stayed at Mar Caribe (also currently known as el Mariachi), so we were in and around the northern stretch the whole time. These places were definitely open as of yesterday:
Zacil Kin (cabanas and restaurant)
El Mar Caribe/El Mariachi (camping/cabanas and restaurant/beach bar)
El Paraiso
La Vita e Bella
Mezzanine
Diamante K
Nacho's/Mayan Grill is definitely closed, as is Santa Fe (though there were a couple of tents there), and Don Cafeto's (though as I mentioned, there's a cheapie restaurant/bar there called el Mariachi). I am not sure about Playa Condesa...can't remember that we specifically walked through there. I don't think Playa Maya is open, because I can't recall there being anything going on between el Mar Caribe and el Paraiso.
I noticed the "clausadero" signs at most of the currently open properties except Zacil Kin and el Mar Caribe.

I will post a full trip report soon...hopefully in the next couple of days, depending how much I have to catch up on at work!

Thanks for the latest news on what's open and sadly, what's not. Does the beach El Mariachi serve the same food as the in-town restaurant? I can't wait for your report!!! :)
