Here's the view from the dining deck at Tita Tulum. Very nice lush courtyard:

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g259/djmarquette/Tulum2006/TitaTulumViewSmall.jpg

And then we went much farther south to find "our very own" stretch of beach. Looking at Google earth after we got back, I figured we were into Sian Kaan already. We did share our beach with this fellow:

Hey austxdan, I am going to azulik in march... How far down did you go to get that beautiful beach to yourself? I have been to the Mayan riviera about 6 times before and this is my first time in Tulum so I am a little nervous.

I'd say we went about 5 - 6 miles from our start at Copal. It started out as a morning run south along the road. This quickly got quite humid, so we cut over to the waterfront to continue. We stopped in at Tita's for breakfast and then continued on. We probably went another mile or so after the last hotels on the beach.

The beach is obviously not raked down there, like in front of a hotel. And there are no chairs etc, as it is "deserted". But we brought a blanket we bought in town, and had water, etc in a backpack, so we were all set. Just us and the bird.

The pics are at Zazil Kin. That's the only place I stay while we're down there. Love it there. It's rugid but not too and it's just a short walk to the Mayan ruins. Then there's the pics of the iguanas at the ruins

Ginger,

Those would be referred to as a "revenue stream". Chris and I hit there one day last May to see what it was like, and just plopped down on a nice big round bed, being naive in the ways of the "beach club". We were told to pay $10 to stay there. Then we moved to a smaller rectangle, and were told $6. The really bad part is that if I pay $$$ to lay on a mattress all day, I want someone to keep the vendors away, but that doesn't happen. Quite the opposite on a "beach club".

We returned back south to the beach in front of Kin Ha for the rest of the day, spread out our blanket, and napped underneath the wonderful smell of Posada Margherita baking fresh bread.

I love the picture of the menu! If anyone else has menu's from restaurants around town or along the beach, please post them!

I so agree, the revenue stream of matresses belongs in Playa or at a resort somewhere other than Tulum..sigh.

"Is that a topless woman in your pic??"

Wow! I'm embarrased to say I didn't notice!!! I'm not sure whether to blame it on old age or the natural beauty (versus natural beauties) that was competiting for my attention!!! :D :D :D

Unfortunately, I did not take any shots of Zazil Kin except of their beach bar. We did walk around the area and the staff was very nice but the accomodations were pretty rustic for the price. We're returning in early December and will be trying Tita Tulum.

I found this shot on a website with several other pics of the cabanas...it's pretty representative of the housing on their grounds:

Hi guys,

Posada del Sol is beachfront, between Punta Piedra and Piedra Escondido. Stayed in Playa for a week, then wanted a few days in Tulum. Stumbled upon the place as we had no reservations made. We just went up and down the beach seeing who had available rooms, and this looked like the nicest we had seen. Not cheap, but we had a two bedroom, two story unit with private bathroom. I'd recommend this place to anyone, a real "Survivor" feel to the place, and those great ocean breezes to keep you cool at night.

cheers

AdGuy has it right
The first photo is the beach at El Parasio looking toward the ruins, the second is the beach bar in front of Zazil Kin and the last shot appears to be the backside of the same bar (taken from Zazil Kin looking towards the ocean). The first picture came together perfectly. This is what paradise looks like to me! I'm hoping it will be as good in December when we are there again.
Now if I can only figure out how to post pictures like everybody else....

AdGuy
11th October 2006, 08:15 AM
Not very tough, playamantoo...if I can do it anyone can! :D When posting, simply go to the spot in your message that you want to insert the picture then click on the Insert Image icon (it looks like a mountain range within a square...the fourth from the right on the bottom row's toolbar). Then "cut and paste" the link from where you store your photos (many use photobucket.com's free service) and hit OK. It should appear instantly.

Now, let me "practice what I preach". Here's a rare sight...the elusive Toh bird that likes to hang around cenotes. The Mayans, when lost in the jungle, use to listen for the call of the Toh as it would lead them to fresh water. We found this one at Gran Cenote...

Minniemex,

If you venture out of Tulum, make sure to visit one of the many cenotes nearby. While I've been to several, my favorite is Gran Cenote (just a couple miles west of Tulum pubelo). If you have a car or a bike you can easily head over there for a half day. Just look for the front entrance:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/FloridaAdGuy/DSCF1213.jpg

Check out the hours and prices (don't panic, they're in pesos). While the grounds are amazing and the flora/fauna is fantastic, I don't recall seeing the topless blondes they indicate on their signage: :D

Not bad at all. My wife and I are certified divers and often scuba in the local (Florida) springs. That's what a cenote is...a spring. She 9.5/10 times wears a wet suit regardless of where we are. She had no complaints on the temperatures in the cenotes whatsoever. My guess is the water runs in the mid to upper 70's. If the outside temp is higher, you'll notice it's a bit cool but will quickly forget about it once you start swimming. You'll definitely want to bring a mask and fins (or you can rent them there) as you're visibility and mobility will be greatly enhanced.

Here's a shot of that crystal clear water...

I think you'll really enjoy it...the stalactites and stalagmites are really cool and the water is SO clear you'll feel like you're floating in space rather than swimming. Make sure you bring snacks/drinks as I don't recall that they sell anything there (other than t-shirts and fin/mask rental).

Have fun and make sure to post a report when you're back!

If Beach Bummin' is what you do best on vacation, you are staying in the perfect place with Cabanas Tulum! That describes my idea of perfection..white sand, sun, food and lots of drinks!:D You just can't beat the beach at your doorstep at Cabanas Tulum!

My first visit to Tulum, I tried to pack alot of action into a week..visiting Ruins, snorkeling in Akumal, the monkey reserve on Coba Rd and a visit to Aktun-Chen..next visit, I went further south for a few days, then returned to Tulum and never left the beach road..3rd time there, I made it to Punta Allen and back one day..then just laid on the beach, ate good food and hydrated myself for 6 days!

Gale,

It sounds like we have the same priorities in Tulum. Our last (and first) trip this past May we spent 10 days mainly laying around on the beach and eating more good food that I'd care to admit. We needed a relaxing trip and becoming one with the sand was just perfect. We didn't even hit the ruins a scant 5km up the road!

What more can you ask for?
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g259/djmarquette/Tulum2006/DanAtLasRanitasSmall.jpg

This coming May we plan to hit a couple of ruins, perhaps Coba and Tulum and even a cenote. Then it will be more sun, sand, and surf. Is Tulum not the perfect place for this!

We have been coming to the Mayan Riviera & Cozumel for 10 years now, but have never traveled as far south as Tulum - we have been slowly moving south as we become comfortable traveling in Mexico - so have seen much of the sights already. Okay I have a few pics of Tulum also. this could be long....
memory lane. Tulum 2004 ...I imagine there is not much left of this wreck....I loved seeing it there.

I wish I had been able to visit this place again. At least the kids were with us as this was the most amazing feeling I have gotten from a restaurant.

I actually prefer the long stretches of beach over the bay at ZAMAS.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Narley/Mexico%202006/P1030666.jpg
And there are some rocky sections that are nice to look at but we like a lot more sand. But I found them very scenic.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Narley/Tulum%20and%20Playa%202005/P1000015.jpg

The people there vary as much as the accomadations....from trendy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Narley/Mexico%202006/Images-g150813-d557443-b1257027S-Vi.jpg

to ...how do you say....not so trendy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Narley/Mexico%202006/DSCF0844.jpg

But the wrecked ship, the various resorts ,the different beaches, and the ruins....it all adds up to more than my senses have experienced anywhere or anytime. Its is amazing! Its as though you have reached the end of the earth....and its beautiful and peaceful. And luckily you have arrived there with a cooler of cold ones to enjoy the whole day basking in the sun. You celebrate your arrival...

but be forewarned...after you experience it, if you experience like i have...it will leave you yearning .....
Go for it, get away from it all...its only less than an hour away....get out of the AI and have an adventure. TULUM.

If you're visiting Tulum and wish to take a day trip, you have to go to Chichen Itza. The gang at Playa.info (follow the link on the main page of this forum) run a great trip to Chichen and Valladolid, making a stop also at a great cenote. (Ik Kil?) Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Great shots Mav,

Last May was our first trip to Tulum, and intentionally we were just slugs on the beach. Not that that was a BAD thing :) .

However, this year we plan to be more active. Perhaps the Tulum ruins (we're there afterall) and Coba and some cenotes.

This is why I love Tulum. You can be touristy - or you can just enjoy the beach. Either way will suit just about anyone.

Our first trip we saw the Tulum ruins, once is enough this trip we made it to Coba. We had a rental car but only used it for finding a place for diner. The rest was spent chillin' on the beach ;) looking for cold beers and margaritas. Rough way to spend a vacation, such a waste of time.

First couple of trips, we did everything we could find to do..caves, monkey reserve, ruins, Sian Kaan tours, cenotes..now, I have been converted to a beach bumpkin..lol..there are very few reasons I even move off the sand...to find a place to eat, refresh a drink, etc. Best way to vacation I can think of is to work so very hard at doing nothing at all! The most difficult thing I want to think about is the choice in restaurants or just where I want to stake out my space in the sand for a day.

Gale, out of all the tours you have done, what tours would you recommend to a pair of newbies to the area. We are interested in some of the Sian Kaan tours, are they worthwhile (we won't have a car)?

Gale in KY
21st November 2006, 05:23 PM
I usually make my way around on my own..with a car or by taxi..it might be worth your while to rent a car for a day or maybe two just for sightseeing. Without a car, I would suggest Cesiak's Tours..I really enjoyed a couple I did with them. As a rule, I find the organized tours way too expensive, for what they charge you can rent a car for a day and do several different things on your own schedule..there are a couple of car rental agencies in Tulum Pueblo, including the one I like, Buster.

http://www.cesiak.org/alldayde.htm

I love to Kayak, and did a Kayak tour with them a couple of years ago that was amazing..it wasn't this one but this is very similar

http://www.cesiak.org/kayak.htm

It all depends on what you prefer to do. Besides the ruins in Tulum, there is also Coba and Muyil that are within an hour of Tulum. I actually prefer Muyil, and there is a tour operator there at the docks that gives a great boat tour of the laguna.

Go fishing! Any of the hotel owners can recommend somebody to take you out for a morning or afternoon of fishing. There are quite a few fishing tour operators from Tulum to Punta Allen.

You know I loved the Monkey Reserve (I mention that alot) but this is something you would really want a car for.

Grand Cenote and Carwash Cenote would be easy to get to with a taxi, just a little ways out of Tulum on Coba Rd. ...you could arrange for the driver to return to pick you up at a designated time.

Aktun Chen is not too far away...it is a really neat with it's dry cave and snorkeling..It bothered me that they have the animals caged there, but it was also cool to see the wildlife of the area close up. Looks like their website is down at the moment, but I will post the link anyway, it is probably temporary

www.aktunchen.com

If you want something a little more active, Alltournative and Selvatura both offer zip lines in the jungle and alot more. Playa.Info has some tours too..I have not done these, so I can't recommend one over the other but I know alot of people rave about Playa.info's tours. With all that beachtime, you might want to explore the jungle a bit. Alltournative offers a couple of great tours to Coba and Cenotes..they can be booked thru playa.info or direct with Alltournative.

Not really a tour, but something I think all of us who love Tulum should do..make time to visit and make a donation to Fundación Talleres Cero, AC

This organization has been offering programs to the children of Tulum since 1992 and has a small library on site that works to expand the children's education and reading abilities..much like the little library in Akumal...it is a wonderful way to give something back to the place we all love so much and the locals who help make our vacations so awesome.

They don't have a website, but Locogringo did a spotlight on them some time ago, the phone number is still a working number and if anyone is interested, I can find an email address for Sally

http://locogringo.com/past_spotlights/oct2000.html

I have never visited the mega tourist places like Xelha or Xcaret, so I can't give a thumbs up or down, except to say that like the All Inclusive resorts, they are probably not "true" Mexico..but many people enjoy them, they are both an all day and into the evening destination.

If snorkeling is of interest, grab a taxi and spend the day at Akumal Bay..sea turtles and mega marine life..it is by far the best snorkeling I have ever experienced..and you can do it right from the beach..no need to book a tour. There is a dive shop there if you need to rent equipment, a few really great restaurants..Lol-ha Beach Bar has a great atmopshere and some of the best guacamoli I have ever eaten, their margaritas are pretty good too. Lucy's has to die for homemade ice cream and her fish tacos are the BEST...the Loncheria, right next to the Arches when you enter Akumal has great food at cheap prices. There are several little gift shops around the village, art galleries etc. It is a good place to kick back for a day. I would recommend buying your own snorkel gear at home before you go though, to get the best fit.

That should keep ya busy for a week or two!:D

Thanks so much for all the info! I need to move down there to do all that stuff. Maybe renting a car for a day or 2 is the way to go. so much I want to see and do.

I love to snorkel and have had some great experiencing snorkeling in Hawaii, so a day at Akumal, sounds like a plan. You made me hungry with all those food suggestions.

I'll check out the link you gave me now!

Thanks, again!:)

Gale,

Incredible information...the problem is it's buried in a picture post. :( Would you consider pasteing it into a new thread? You've offered so many great ideas that I'm sure alot of newbies would find invaluable! I can add info on Xcaret and Xel-Ha (I was dragged there by my in-laws but actually had a decent time:D ). I might be able to add significantly upon my return as we plan on hitting Ek Balam, Sian Kaan, Vallolodid, and misc. cenotes while down there.

Also, glad to hear Buster has worked out for you. I'm always super suspicious of the car rental firms down there (heck, anywhere for that matter). Easyway has really gotten slammed on the boards lately but Buster still seems okay. Their responses to my emails have been helpful and (for Mexican time) pretty quick.

Thanks for your help!

I'm loving the shots of Tita Tulum...we're in Cabana 7 in two weeks! :) While on the subject of TT, jx2:

Did you feel like TT (and other hotels) was at capacity or was it kinda slow (50% full)?
I know TT has 24-electricity but does that mean just lights or do they also have outlets that you can recharge batteries or a small appliance (coffee maker)?
How was their restaurant?Thanks!

Maybe 4 or 5 cabanas rented when we were there. The place was pretty empty, but so was everywhere else at that time. Beaches were pretty deserted too. Maybe 30 %
TT has full electricity 24 hours with outlets in sink area wich is just outside of the bathroom.Electricity at night is from solar and they have notes saying to please reserve as much as you can(such as turn off stuff when you leave your cabana)

We did not make it there for dinners, as we would have had to walk the beach a long distance in the evenings - I do have some pictures of TT also, but do not have the time right now to download them - but I will try & get to it this weekend - right now have to go get ready for 20 for dinner tomorrow -

Adguy..just a comment on your question

know TT has 24-electricity but does that mean just lights or do they also have outlets that you can recharge batteries or a small appliance (coffee maker)?

As a rule, from info from a friend who lives in Xcalak and has solar/generator power only in his Casita, appliances that heat up (curling irons, hair dryers, coffeemakers etc.) wreak havoc on these utility systems..most places tell you they are not allowed. They can drain solar stored power in a matter of minutes. I suspect it won't be long before they start to hook the Boca Paila Beach Road area up to the main power grid in Town..especially with Azul opening, and this won't be an issue any longer.

November is low season, and is always a bit slow, but from what I understand this year has been VERY low in occupancy all along the RM. Starting with the week of Christmas until the week after Semanta Santa (Easter Week) if tradition allows, vacancies will be at a minimum. Good thing you have your reservations already!

When we were in the Tulum area a month ago they were busy putting in the electricity posts in front of Copal and towards the small community around Zamas. Earlier this year we drove to Punta Allen and the road was paved up to the new bridge, and extensive work on the road to pave it, potentially all the way to Punta Allen? I think the days of relaxed, cabanas on the beach, no car noises, and no big hotels may be coming to an end. I do not know whether the Siian Kaan reserve will prevent large scale development- I hope so. I suggest we all take advantage of the glorious opportunities to enjoy our favorite sites in the area while we still can!

Thanks for the heads up, Gale. I'm thinking things should still be slow as we'll be down there the second week in December (between the Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation periods). If I feel too overwhelmed by folks (I do afterall live in a rather remote area of Florida with 15 households on my street which runs four miles long) I can always retreat into the Sian Ka'an! :D

We're staying in Cabana 7 at Tita's as it was one of the few that had a King-sized bed. Probably all those childhood years of sleeping on a single bed, while sharing a bedroom with my older brother that turned me into such a "mattress snob"...just have to have a Queen or King bed!

We tend to take alot of photos with our digital camera so my interest in outlets was more related to a battery charger but sometimes my wife brings a hair dryer (a small price to pay for her agreeing to keep her hair long). I have one of the outlet converters you can screw into a lightbulb socket. They can come in handy when no plugs are available (you can pick them up for a couple bucks at Home Depot) but prefer to use a regular outlet if available.

I'll try to get shots of all the Tita cabanas and grounds while down there. Let me know if you decide on a particular room before I leave.

I think it will take several years for Tulum to loose it's serene low key feel. There are a couple new larger buildings going up, but there is still so much undeveloped land. The big place ( Azul) at the intersection makes me just go yuck!!!!!!! evrytime we drive by:( . I have noticed that Los Lirios still has several new buildings that were started over 2 years ago, and they are in the same unfinished condition now. This tells me there cant be too much need for more rooms yet.

I sure hope you are right and that Tulum will remain as we like it. However there was a picture of Tulum taken from google earth showing what appears to be significant development being planned between the town and the beach. The electricity will open up more areas as well. On the playa forum there was a discussion based on the newspaper article that they expect to have 10,000 more hotel rooms in Tulum by 2030, and an estimated 15,000 hectares used in the process. the link is:

http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carmen-forum/26913-10-000-rooms-more-tulum-area.html

I hope they hold off but I am a realist. I will be going down towards Chetulal for a trip but also will be visiting isla Holbox and the area north of Cancun in the spring so will let you know how that works out. I love my serenity and tranquility in the beauty of Tulum, but that is what also brings in the droves and we should expect it!

Dont get me wrong as i dont believe there wont be some massive changes in the area. I just feel it will be more than 3 years down the road before these massive changes actually start to transpire to the point that they will change the ambience of Tulum. Electricity( being on the power grid) will definitely be the single most important item to get things rolling.
I have noticed several poles, but with hanging wires or no wires at all.

Lee, whatever that thing you wife is eating at Don Cafeto's was my downfall. I'm a cajun who can handle the hottest food around but that thing was dynamite. I think they slip those in there to sell more Negra Modelos to the gringo.

jx2, my girl has a grasshopper just like that at her office now. Of all the stuff we bought while in Mexico I think she loves the grasshopper the most. And for me, it's definitely the sand dollars I collected in Cancun. You gotta have money to get there but the simple pleasures are my favorite.

Also guys, I went past 100 posts. This forum has been really fun. I hate to admit but when I'm not on the road I check it a few times a day from the office. Thanks for all the pics and info. You keep my memories fresh and that is priceless.

Succesfully drove my hog to the top of a sand dune on a deserted southern beach.

Hi there,
i never got to writing a trip report, so at least i'm trying to post a couple of pictures. Just wanted to thank everyone here for their advice because it all turned out into the honeymoon of our dreams.

We stayed at nueva vida de ramiro. after our first night there, we woke up with the sunrise and i saw some movement on the beach, some of the guys at nueva vida with a bucket close to the water. i got the camera and rushed to the beach and was lucky enough to see some turtles! we didn't expect to see them since we arrived in tulum 27th november and i thought all eggs should have hatched by then. well, it was a great begining for our honeymoon. we couldn't believe the gift tulum had for us on our arrival! seeing those tiny turtles run into the water was incredible.

This is our view from our cabaņa... i loved the view. we stayed in nave inquieta. we hope we can go back to tulum soon... we'd really love to check other places out, but we really loved nueva vida so if we get the chance to go back to tulum we might just stay there again.

Fiirst one is kind of arty..I loved the pink. I just couldn't get out of the car fast enough to take the photo. thinking seriously about getting a new camera. I think a Leica d lux 3. It supposedly has some good features for a point and shoot. And I love the intangible thing the Leica lens provides. So, if hubby reads my signals right, my trip report in March will have photos from my new camera!
