What is happening on the beach next to intersection of the Ruins road and Boca Paila road? I wa on Google Earth and was sure surprised to see this. Has it been there for long? Maybe i just drove by it without noticing. I hope it doesn't speak for things to come.

Ok, I just tried to attach a Google Earth image of it but can't get the attachment thing to work, so I'll just have to post this as a question and hope other people here have Google Earth.

Just North of the intersection??? I fthis is what you are talking about it is a big hotel:( . It was being built in 2005 when we visited and is continuing as we speak. Wasnt too much difference when we were there in May of this year. Unfortunately this is what the Tulum beaches will eventually become:( . I heard there was some fighting going on regarding this hotel in this area, but $$$ talk in Mexico.

This new hotel is definately the biggest thing on the coast. In this photo you can see all the way down the coast way into the Sian Ka'an (where there is water, the laguna, on the west side of the land as well as the Caribbean to the east). As you can see there is NOTHING else the size of this hotel. And what are those gear wheels anyway?

I finally figured out how to work the attachment feature, but I would love some advice on how to quickly convert the image file to a small enough size to conform with this message board (<97kb). Dragging it into photoshop works but I'd love to find a faster method.

This is the place I was talking about. It is pretty big, especially in this area. The first time we saw it, I just said well there goes the neighborhood:mad: I dont even like the upgrades that have recently been done to my favorite beach hangout (El Paraiso). I know alot of people enjoy that Mamitas atmosphere, and I think that is where El Paraiso is headed. It's all just part of growth and money i guess:(

Photoshop is the only way i know of... sorry

I agree...saw photos recently of El Paraiso and its new Mamitas-type atmosphere a la beach beds, etc. and I got an instant bad vibe. I can't stand five minutes at Mamitas without bleeding from the ears, etc. I'd hate to see Tulum changed into that type of ambiance.

We were at PDC in late June. Everyone raved about Mamitas but we couldn't figure out what the big deal was. Sure, it was better than the packed, diesel-laden beach in front of the main portion of the town but come on! Maybe we're spoiled, living a short distance from a pristine beach on Florida's Atlantic coast, but I can't see why people want to be grouped into a tight matrix of chairs and bombarded with techno-funk music!
