Okay guys, I need some help. We have never stayed at Tulum. We were always Isla lovers in the past. However, with the continued loss of beach and increased tourism which brings increased crime/corruption...yada yada ya...we are ready for Tulum. But where to stay. We are arriving on Dec 30th and leaving on Jan 6th. Are following options are: Cabanas Copal, El paraiso, the hemingway ( which we have pretty much ruled out), and Cabanas Tulum. I have also checked on availability of Hamaca Loca but I figure that is a LONGSHOT.
Anyway, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for a great beach, eating areas that we can walk to and not too much crowd. I know this is high season and it will be more crowded but I can have high hopes. Rustic is okay as long as I don't have to deal with snakes...
Thanks so much! I promise trip reports!!

Cabanas Copal ~ Great place ~ just a small beach.
El paraiso ~ I thought they were closed??
Hemmingway ~ at the start of the south beach area, but sometimes can get very sea weedy. (third)
Cabanas Tulum ~ I have stayed here and it is a great budget location. The beach is right outside your room and you have a wonderful patio to lounge on and stare away at the sea!! (2nd choice)
Hamaca Loca ~ Would be my first choice if it is one of the front cabanas.
My passion is long beach walks so that is why my preferences are what they are ~ they are all located on the "south" beach area where you can walk forever!!:p
I would be quick to take whatever is available:)
Isla was also one of my first loves but as you stated has changed so drastically in the last few years. In 2005, my last time on Isla, I was very disheartened by Playa Norte and those ugly highrises right there on the beach. UGHHHHH:mad: But I really miss Ave Hildago with all the places to eat:o

I agree with minniemex with one small exception. I'd take Hamaca Loca even if I couldn't get one of the two cabanas directly facing the water. At that time of year you won't need the breeze and the other cabanas there are still very close to the ocean. The other choices just don't compare to any of HL's offerings.

Thanks guys so much for the input. As i was freaking about hurrying to find a place, I booked El Pariaso...YIKES!!! Didn't know they were suppose to be closed!! I had been emailing with Tony Palma from there and paid through Paypal. I chose this place because of beach but I will definitely let you know. My hubby will just love me if I screwed up on this as he left it in my hands.
As for Isla, I definitely miss so much about it especially Hildago and Media Luna. We were last there in 2006 and I really wanted to cry. We found Isla in 2002 after a disasterous trip to Cancun. Anyway, I fell in love. However, it continually changed with each visit. :(
So thanks again for the info and I am now scared as all get out!!! Hope we get there and it is open and I just didn't pay for someone else to have a vacation!

Thanks! Yes, I have been freaking out a little....lots actually. I guess we may really be sleeping on the beach. Is there anyway to find out who is going down between now and then so they might can check?

thanks guys for all of your help. I have been emailing them over the last few days. I emailed them again this afternoon and asked about closure and they said they were closed for a week in July but were back up without difficulties. They have been wonderful with their quick responses which is most unusual with my experience with mexico. Anyway, we are booked and airfare is purchased and now I get to count down the days! Thank you thank you thank you! I will definitely let you guys know about our stay and probably have more questions as time gets closer.
