I'm planning a trip with my friends to Tulum in the beginning of May 2007.
It's probably going to be 6-8 of us. As most of my friends are single I wanted to ask how is the nightlife in Tulum. Can you recommend any bars and restaurants that stay open late and places where to meet other single young people???? :) :) :) Thank you.

Not really a nightlife in Tulum, unless you consider 10-11p.m. closing times nighlife. I have heard Mezzanine has a little party on Friday and or Saturday nights, but that is about all i know of. Playa Del Carmen is the closest nightlife with several good nightclubs for dancing etc..

If you really want an active and varied night life, then Playa is the place to go. If you want to go to Tulum, with its gorgeous uncrowded beaches, and meet single travelors then go the the little low-budget rustic resorts at the north end of the Tulum beach zone, up near the ruins. The more expensive cabana places to the south tend to be full of self-absorbed couples. These places are definately not fun if you are single.

Another concept is to spend some time in Playa and find somebody to go enjoy Tulum with you.

My favorite low-budget place in Tulum is Zazil Kin (http://www.hotelstulum.com/Zazilkin/) They have a little bar where they music from time to time, but themain draw of the place is the great beachs and sea, the ruins and the nearby cenotes.

Hey!
Thank you very much for an advice. I have looked at that Zazil Kin place, and it does look very nice, the beach is fantastic.
I have been to Mexico last year in October with my boyfriend, and stayed for a week in Al-Cielo hotel on Xpu-Ha beach, it was lovely but we were the only people in the hotel so it felt too isolated. We also spent a week in Cancun and didn't like it too much- was too commercial. We only spent about 2 days in Tulum and loved it!!! that is why we want to come again with friends and stay only in Tulum. If it's too quiet we will drive down to Playa.

Also, as I can see there are only few villas to rent in Tulum and are mostly too expensive - that is why I think we will stay in one of the cabanas.
Thanx.
Lucia

Mezzanine is the place on Friday night, we have been there till 230am and a great party with lots of dancing, I was just in Tulum this past weekend and Mezzanine was open on Friday night, they were closed in July, on Saturday night we hit a dance club on 307 in Pueblo on the right just as you enter town, mostly Mexican, but nice and alot of dancing going on. If you stay in cabanas, Tita Tulum has my vote.

I thought the same thing at first:rolleyes: . I think LC was referring to the fact that it is mostly couples looking for a retreat type of getaway and are only interested in each other:D , or at least i hope that is what was meant.

When traveling with that many people, (6-8), you have a great opportunity to create your own night life 24/7. My wife and I like to travel with friends too and we have always had a blast without ever having to go out. All it takes is a little bit of planning before you leave the States to bring your favorite cds and whatever else you need to have a good time. Most of the places we go to have a boom box that comes with the rental but you could e-mail the proprietor and see what they can dig up for you. I usually bring down a string of 100 christmas lights and other decorations to liven up the place as well.

During the day you can make a trip down to the Tulum fish market and get what you need for a cookout. Make sure that you have enough rum and juice for everyone. Good rum is really dirt cheap. With that many people, being out on the beach at night or wherever you decide to go should never be a problem. Be creative and take ownership of your own good time. You will be glad you did and it is always lots of laughs.

Great advice Raymond. Tulum is definately a DIY type of place when it comes to fun, food, drinks, activities etc. And that is just one of the reasons I love the Tulum area. If I want to do the bar scene or go on organized tours and such, you just have to drive up the road a bit to PDC.

But to answer the original question... there are some bars and restaurants in town that stay open for a while at night and some that have live entertainment. For the beach area I would suggest walking along the beach until you find something you like. My girlfriend and I did the walk in the pitch dark and had a great time. Just bring a flashlight.

When staying in Tulum the best thing too is cab into town when the sun goes down for some dinner and then hit a few bars afterward. Then head to Zazil Kin on the weekends for theres sure to be something good going on. That's as well the only place I like to stay. The place can get really busy over the weekends at night especially if you're there in January. If there's something going on at Mezzanine there will be plenty of ways to find out. Mezzanine can be fun too. At Zazil on the weekend sthey'll always have a live act or dj or both and it's always been a good show to see.

Back at the beginning of July, El Paraiso set up a very cool lounge scene on Friday night -- pulled all the beach beds into sitting areas and hung some nifty white draperies all over the palm trees and so forth. They might have been taking advantage of the fact that Mezzanine was on hiatus then, but it might be worth checking out. There were probably 200 people there around midnight.

Just try it you will like it! Tita has some excellent cabanas, spotless well equipped always electric and just off the beach. The staff is fantastic, we stay in cabana 4 one of two second story cabanas for its great breeze. It is on the best beach in Tulum and near Posada Margherita, Zamas and Ana Y Jose for good beach dining, Tita's restaurant is also excellent, great fish, cerviche, mexican food and always very fresh. I love their coconut shrimp and chicken with mole sauce. I have stayed up and down the Tulum beach area and prefer Tita's for its ambience, price, location and all the other factors I have mentioned, the only complaint I ever heard about Tita's was some lady who said the mattress was to hard!

Whoops, sorry, that didn't come across quite right!! What I meant is that the couples in the cabanas to the south are often there for a romantic time in seclusion. They want to spend their time absorbed in each other. Been there myself.

But if you are single then its much more fun to be with other single people. Personally I like the low buck places near the Tulum ruins, like Zazil Kin, for that reason when I'm on my own, but you should know that some of these cabanas tend to be much more rustic and basic. Mezzanine on the other hand is a party spot in this area but is supposed to be quite nice and pricy as well.
