First off ~ http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Avitars/welcome.gif to the board Danny!!
I would suggest first that you use our wonderful search function ~ it will answer a lot of questions.

Next, I would suggest you get yourself a "ticker" ~ we love having tickers around here!!

I don't know that you need to stay overnight at Coba, it is really a short drive from Tulum. A day trip would be very doable.
I have not stayed at Zahra's, but if you search it you will find a wealth of info!!

When in December are you going? I'm surprised you couldn't find anywhere else, though Zahra is in a great location and has a good restaurant, so I'm sure you'll be happy there. What's your budget?

Thanks for the tips.. I will post my impressions of the place. Another question - we will be spending one night near Coba, and I would like to explore the inner jungle a bit - any idea where or how to find a local guide? Leaving Dec 12...

I would suggest the Punta Laguna Monkey Preserve. Hire a guide and he takes you to see the monkeys in the jungle.
As much a tour of the jungle as it is to see the monkeys. It is only about half an hour from Coba.
Here is some info on it from my trip report.

Stuff is booking up fast! We have waiting lists for some weeks already...Christmas week we've turned down over 20 groups!
We only have one week left for the whole season that is completely open and have a group of kite boarders and someone else both trying to get it!
So if you are planning trips to this area this season, you better start booking now!
