View Full Version : Food/drink in Cabanas? - Cabanas Copal, others?

The Cabanas Copal website says that no food or drink is allowed in the rooms. Is this really enforced? What about other beach cabana's? I can't imagine not have some snacks and beverages in the rooms, especially with a wife that is hypoglycemic (sp?) and need to snack often.

Do you all really not eat/drink in the rooms?

Thanks for the help

I've never stayed at Copal so I can't speak for there, but since you also asked about "others" I can say I have never stayed at a place in the whole Mayan Riviera area where we didn't keep snacks/drinks in our room AND eat them there. :)

I've never heard of this rule in the places I've stayed at.

Having recently stayed at Copal, there is a no food or drink rule in effect. I dont think they enforce the rule on the honor system from what I can tell. Other than water, we did not bring any food or drink into the cabana. I would imagine that some of it depends on what type of food you bring in and how it is stored. There is a world of difference between a plastic wrapped snack, and a doggie bag from dinner.

Yes, that is what they say, however we had a few things, snackey stuff, drinks in a small fold-up cooler. They dont enforce it but claim because of the critters running around no food etc. Keep them closed and wrapped and put away to avoid that problem. They also want you to eat and drink at the resturant and bar, understandable but just be reasonable with the whole taking food thing. Dave

My guess is that this rule is a response to the number of complaints of "there's bugs in my room!" Given the openness of cabanas in a tropical area, I can imagine that bugs are pretty normal, and are only intensified when there is food for them to snack on (I know that when I leave food on my counter, I'm guaranteed some ants that day!). They are probably trying to avoid bug complaints.

If we go to Copal, I think we will take a small insulated lunch bag that looks like a camera case with a few snacks and drinks to stay discrete and not alert the food police.
Thanks.

I'm guessing it's a "rule", so they can sell you more food and drink.

Anyone seen their cabana rate increase  We'll be thinking twice or more times about staying there again.

I just looked at their site last night coincidentally. The high season rates are way way too high for what kind of place it is. There are plenty of places with fans or a/c that are cheaper now. Part of the reason I stayed there was the lack of electricity, but there comes a point when I have to ask myself why I am paying so much to be so deprived of services.

Wow - Glad we've already just "Experienced" Copal at the lower rates. Another reason not to stay there again.

'Xactly.

I enjoyed our stays there at the previous rates. Now they are gouging.

I stay at Zazil Kin and they as well ask you not to have food or drink in the cabana. The reason is that if everyone was keeping food the cockroaches would get crazy out of hand and those things are freaky nasty big down there. I've seen a few. Just be sure and have everything kept packed in a cooler or something where they can't get at it and tell their buddies about. We always bring snacks and beers back from Super San Francisco at night, but make sure that the food is packed in the cooler when we're not eating it or around.

I do not believe the "no food and drink in Cabanas" rule was made to force you to eat and drink in the Copal restaurants, though, over my six years of stays at Copal and Azulik, I still find the food and service at Copal and Zahra to be top notch and reasonably priced. I believe the rule is, indeed, to help keep bugs and other critters out of your cabana. I have never, ever seen any type of rodent in my cabanas/villas but they must be out there somewhere. I have found even bugs to be few and far between. Keeping a clean cabana helps to ensure this.
As far as price, a quick survey will show that rates are going up at many places all along the beach. Beware of those that have not raised rates. There is probably a very good reason, like lack of customers. In any business, hotel rates are based on supply and demand. Most all of the people I met at Copal and Azulik earlier this month (July 2006) were quite happy being there. Both places seemed to be all booked up. Business is good. People are willing to pay for this Paradise. The owners are business savy. I am sure they are well aware of their price points. So, if they have raised their rates a bit for the high season, it's still a great value at what I feel is the best place on the Tulum beach. Six years in a row and can't wait for next year!
