What a great forum. Thanks for all your feedback so far.
I have read some the comments in the FAQ section on car rentals. but.... are there any clear advantages in renting a car at the airport rather than in renting one in Tulum?
How are the road markings from CUN to Tulum?

Road markings are pretty easy once you realize that there are no turns once you're off the airport road until you're all the way down in Tulum ready to turn out to the beach.
In other words, don't go off on any exits or retornos (u-turn) or anything like that. Just keep on following the signs to Tulum.
To me, the advantage of renting the car at the airport is that you won't have to pay for a transfer from airport to Tulum or deal with the bus or any of that. And you can stop wherever you like to stock up.

The only thing I can suggest is that if you do not want to rent from the airport but are sure you do when you are in Tulum, make the arrangements before you leave as I do think some places charge more when you walk up to rent. I know this was true of Buster when I used them in Tulum. Had I made the reservation online before my trip I would have save around $50. for a 3 day rental. That adds up to a lot of cervesas!!

How are the roads? In other words do we need a 4WD?
We will most likely stay in Tulum Pueblo and do daily trips to the beaches or other day trips.

Also, both broader vehicle inventory and better pricing are usually found by renting at CUN-area agencies than down in Tulum.

They're pretty much all paved (don't worry James...I won't break into my "paved paradise" song). They only exception in the area is the Sian Ka'an preserve, but even then a regular rental car and a dose of smarts should get you down that road without much trouble...unless they've had a bunch of rain.
