My husband and I were considering this place for an August vacation and received an email from Loco Gringo today that Suenos is "closed indefinitely"
Anyone know what gives? Can anyone suggest a laid-back QUIET place in the Tulum region?

I would agree that they are closed. The gate entrance was locked when we drove by, so we were staying close and walked by it from the beach side. It did looked closed and appears to have been for a while. It could be a real nice place. 1 or 2 rooms looked as if someone was staying in them but might have been workers or someone? Have you tried contacting them directly? We stayed at Copal to the north 3 kms. And just south of Suenos Tierra Del Sol very nice place. Both were reasoanable and comfortable. As far as laid back take your pick of many in this area. Search google for tulum cabanas you will find lots of info. Hope this helps.

Different World still shows them open and available, and says the website was updated today.
Suenos' own website is still online.
I recently read a trip report about Suenos, they can't have been closed for too long. I wonder if this is anything along the line of the closure of Coqui Spa a few weeks ago..some kind of license problem that may be resolved hopefully?

According to posts on the LocoGringo forum, Suenos de Tulum is closed indefinitely because of a lawsuit over land ownership.

Don't know personally, but I found some directions on the web:
From Cancun airport, head south following the signs to Playa del Carmen, Playacar and Tulum on the highway #307. You will pass Playa del Carmen and Playacar and also the entrance to the ruins at Tulum. Turn to the left at the major crossroads with the road to Coba. So, when you see a turning to the right to Coba, you should turn left. You will be heading directly towards the sea on a very straight road.
The road ends at a T junction at the coast. Turn right the ocean will be on your left, follow this road for approximately 10 minutes, passing the hotels Cabanas la Conchita, Zamas, Maya Tulum, Ana y Jose, Tita Tulum, Amansala and Maya Paradise. Suenos Tulum is on your left; the entrance is marked by double wooden gates.
Good luck!

Suenos is right next to (on the south side of) Ocho Tulum. Both are a little bit south of Amansala, so start looking for it when you pass the orange Amansala sign. It goes Amansala/Casa Violeta/Om/Ocho/Suenos.

Can someone please tell me if Ocho is all that? They have like 7 or 8 meters of beach space. I went into their beach bar which was just ok. The rooms must be very nice.

Doug..I do think Ocho is just about the perfect place. A great mix of rustic and luxury. The rooms are beautiful, or at least the one I saw with beachreader was. HUGE walk in shower, Big rooms with what looked to be and were described by Diane as good beds. Very clean. Nice balconys or partios with wood furniture.
I enjoy the restaurant there and count it as one of my favorites. Good Coffee, not great but very good if yuo rank it compared to the Instant you used to find everywhere in Tulum..lol. That's improving finally, thank goodness.
I would definitely stay at Ocho, and that's saying something because I don't usually give these spendy places a second glance, being the queen of cheap..lol.
I had a margarita there and a mojito..Mojito was better than the one I had at Lazebra. It was the superior Mojito for Tulum Beach. The margarita was good, not the best around, but very tasty.
We shared some guac, nothing memorable but I don't remember it being unpleasant.
They had Chaya juice for BR when we went there for breakfast during our trip. I had never had Chaya..it's not the easiest thing to find anymore.
Not sure if it is really worth the ppn..but I would like to do some in person research and let ya know!:D My only suggested improvement right now would be to fix the steps leading off the beach up to the deck at the restaurant..that first one is a BIG one..not easy for short people with short legs..heehee.

Mojito was better than the one I had at Lazebra.
Did you try the LaZ Mojito on this last trip? I didn't but they are using real sugar cane juice they create via their new sugar cane press. I don't know how new but it wasn't there in September I don't think.

18th May 2008, 08:25 AM
I had Mojitos at La Zebra when I was there with Fran in Feb/March.
I was suprized that they weren't very sweet...I don't do much sugar at all, but I like my Mojitos with a sweet flavor and the ones at La Zebra were not sweet at all, but had a particularly strong "pencil shaving" taste (the brand of rum I assume) ..and no real mint flavor to speak of.
I guess I am a bit of a Mojito "snob"..lol..been drinking Mint Juleps all my life and I like Mojitos to have the sweetness of the Julep. the bourbon in a Julep is naturally a bit sweeter than Rum is, but when you add a bit of cane to the Mojito, it should bring out the sweetness as a primary flavor and that was not what I experienced in the La Zebra Mojito.
Ocho's..the first taste you receive is sweet mint..then the rum kicks in..with it's woody taste. Just about the perfect Mojito so far for me.

Doug, are you sure you're talking about Ocho, or did you mean Om? Om's the one with the tiny beach space and beachfront bar. Ocho has like 200 meters of beachfront, and their restaurant is the large circular building up off the beach (right next to Suenos).
The thing for me that's "all that" about Om is the very nice people and the great food in the restaurant from Chef Freddy. Most of the rooms are very large and nice, but the rooms aren't on the beach.

I wanted to post some new photos of Suenos. The thing I love about Suenos is there is something to look at on every wall. There is texture and art everywhere. Jorge explained to me, he wanted to create a sense of movement. The waves, the wind, the jungle - all moving. Even the toilets and the sinks were decorated ornately. Each of the 5 buildings are dedicated to an element...selva, sol, lluvia, tierra, and ?. I'll reuse some of these in my TR but wanted to lay some of these out.

Maybe BR but when I was there they had all their chairs jammed up in one little area. I guess it just gives the appearance of having a small beach.

Thanks for the pix, Doug. I love the artistic sense of Suenos, and I especially love that they have a lot of vegetation around instead of stripping it all out. It feels much more like it is part of the natural environment, and feels a bit more private, too, I think.
Shoot, I'm going to have to get back there soon!

Oh, right, I remember that, too. All the chairs and kayaks and stuff were right in front of the restaurant, but I think there's still plenty of room to pull the chair to wherever you want it.
Fabulous pictures of Suenos, thanks so much! I forgot for a while that they have a pool, that will be an excellent option to offer friends. Just wish it weren't so darned expensive, but I know how things are down there nowadays.

Jorge and spoke about that. Using what is there. As I was leaving they were installing large beach beds using locall wood. It's very important to these Mexican owners to use what local nature has to offer.
Elizabeth and I had a lengthy conversation about what Tulum is becoming, golf courses, AIs, etc. and she isn't liking it at all. Their opinions on Tulum growth are very similar to the opinions expressed on this board.

I never understood the need for a pool on the beach. But this thing was so refreshing. Playa Caribe in Akumal had one too. It is excellent to be able to rinse off. I remember Jorge out there early morning, around 7am, cleaning the pool and changing the "foot water" (water used to rinse your feet). You could tell he takes pride in his pool.

This should all be in my TR but WTF. I didn't get into the details but will say it was very trying for them. They spent a fortune in the courts. Jorge came up and sat with me my last morning while I ate breakfast and he suggested that there where dark times when he wondered if he would prevail. In his heart he knew he was right but we all know that's not always enough. All of his hard work thrown to the courts? I can only speculate but would suggest this family has tremendous faith in a higher power or extreme perseverance and dogged determination.
They gave me a ride back one night from town and I spoke with Elizabeth in detail about her concerns with the direction of Tulum - the golf course, the AIs, the places owned by non-Mexicans who build property only for an investment, then move back to wherever. The people who don't concern themselves with preserving the integrity of the landscape.
I enjoyed that talk and explained that there are outsiders (on this board) who feel the same. Then she did something I thought was very special. She had Jorge stop the car about a half kilometer from the property so she could walk the beach back to Suenos. I don't know if she did it for the health of her body or her mind. But the fact that she enjoys the beach as we do gave me reason to pause and take notice.

I think I have a picture of how they looked in my pictures from 2005 - can't get into my photobucket at the moment for some reason.
But basically 4 tall wooden posts, with a sturdy fabrick tied to each one (pulled taught) about waist high, and then another piece of fabric a few feet above it tied to the tops of the posts for shade. It looks from your picture that they were putting the big wooden posts back in when you were there Doug.
The pic I have of Saba (one of the doggies) that I posted in your TR is Saba underneath one of them.

Things are coming along fine! We are getting lots of improvements! We are planning to build a big palapa around the back of the property (the holds about 30 people) for multi-purposes (like yoga retreats, weddings, and events!)
We want to focus and start promoting the hotel for events, I think it would be fun!
There hasn't been much movement because of the low season, but it has helped us to do new projects.

I would be living large this trip but that new A/C unit cost thousands so I'm budgeting once again. By the way, that's not a problem. I've stayed at Suenos and I've stayed at Diamante K for $6 a night. The arrangements had no bearing on my level of enjoyment. I just love being on the beach and relaxing with a few cervezas.

Definitely walkable from Suenos, it's kind of between NV and Suenos on the road.
Thanks, BR!

Another Suenos question: On TripAdvisor several people mention LOTS of bees in the restaurant. So many that most of the times they just have their meals in their rooms. Anyone have similar experiences?

:wave:I can answer that, during a very short time of the year, we get invaded by bees, not just Suenos, but anywhere on the Tulum beach....dont{ worry about it unless you are coming in January, pretty sure that is when it was this year. I got stung on the hand eating at a restaurant and didn{t think twice about it, never had a prob before, so went and did two massages....by the end of the first one, my hand was so swollen I couldnt close my fingers, and HUMUNGOUS by the end of the second one...didn{t show them until after....I took the next few days off.....
Anyway, it{s the same with flys...normally not a problem, then WOWOWOW! there are a million of them and embarrassing! But everyone is in the same boat, so not really a comment on cleanliness. Just part of the jungle life that we get used to...along with the "water bugs"!!!

Bee-free in mid-April. In fact, no bugs at Suenos the entire week of April 7-14. By the way, we really enjoyed the food at Suenos. They have a very short menu, but the meals were fresh and well prepared. I'd say that their specialty is fish and seafood, and they are happy to prepare it in a variety of styles.

I was there the first week of May 08. No bees at all.

I think TripAdvisor reviewers seem to be really picky, especially if they're coming from places that are much different. It wasn't going to dissuade me from Suenos, I was just curious. What will stop me from coming are these flight prices. Cheapest I've found so far is $422/RT from DFW ... and those are with less-than-ideal days and times. Ugh.
Thanks, guys!
