I will be staying at a couple different places while in Mexico. One of the spots in Tulum has asked me to give him my credit card over the phone, or email the info to hold my spot. I asked about paypal or a secure way to pay, but apparently that is not available. Is this normal? I have never paid this way for any other trip. Suggestions? We are leaving on Thursday! :palmtree::dolphin:

Paying with a credit card over the phone is more secure than sending it via email -- a definite no no. As long as you know who you are dealing with at the other end, i.e., you called them, then it should be secure.

Yeah we have done it similar ways. Just don't give the 4 digit security code on the back of your card! We've never had a problem.

We've done and still don't feel comfortable with it. I would contact your cc company, let them know the situation and only authorize the reservation charge. That way if an employee gets your card number, it won't be usable.

I know it's the usual to pre pay bookings for hotels in Tulum, but I would hesitate to pay by phone with my credit or debit card.
Ask if they have paypal so you can pay by internet.
Ask if you can wire the funds.
Of course, with your cc, if unexpected charges show up, you do have some recourse and can dispute the charges. You do have some protections with a cc you don't have with a debit card.

Good point Lynnette! We notified our companies before we left and after just as an added precaution.
