Trying to figure out logistics of hitting Akumal on our way to PDC for a couple nights with LUGGAGE [didn't think of that when planned on grabbing a colectivo...LOL].
On Playa they suggested renting a car in Tulum and dropping off either Akumal or PDC...has anyone done this?
Is there a car rental company with locations in both spots? AND big key...can I rent the car and not waste the ENTIRE day and miss out on the plan...??
Thanks. I've been trying to search but companies are very vague about their locations....
a local on playa offered to be our driver...I may consider this. LOL.:beerchug:

Sorry...
I looked up on locogringo and looks like Executive is in Tulum and PDC...
so is Hertz but bad reviews here recently....
So for ONE day rental mid size...base is $21.99 + $5 to drop off PDC
but then there are these choices:
collision damage [$17]
Loss Damage [$35]
Accident Liability [$11 must select]
Personal Accident Insurance [$8]
So if I select all but Loss Damage its $70...
But if anyone has done it and can say if it was a good experience and not too much time wasted, that would be great. Thanks.

You can also pick up a car from Buster in Tulum and drop off at PDC.

Well Buster is a mere $160 for the DAY!!! LOL.
I think I could easily hire a driver for that...don't you think? Hee. Hee.
Sigh.
I am also thinking of booking a tour through alltournative and having them pick us up in Tulum and drop off in PDC...as long as they're willing to carry our luggage, might work out fairly economically considering.
But that doesn't get us to Akumal...perhaps another trip...eh.

I know this is somewhat tangential to your question but here is what I am doing. We are renting a car at CUN and then driving down to Tulum, spending several days there then driving up to Playa and stopping at Akumal along the way. We are returning the car to Playa. I can't deal with parking headaches as we are staying the remainder of our trip on 8th street by the beach in PDC. A definite no parking area.
This is courtesy of Continental car rental who have offices at CUN and PDC. There was no extra charge for the one way rental. We are 1 month away from leaving, can't wait!

I'm probably just going to bag Akumal sadly. Boo Hoo.
But there's also the possibility of doing bus to PDC renting in PDC and heading to Tulum and returning in PDC...so it's 4 days but they only consider it 3day rental [24 hour cycle].
I checked easyway in PDC [good reviews] and it's $99 before the insurances....then here's the choices:
Additional Liability Insurance (ALI):11 per day 33.00
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW):15 per day 45.00
Theft Protection (TP):5 per day 15.00
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI):3 per day 9.00
*Supplement for Extra Protection Cover (EPC) = 0 % Deductible ( + the cost of the CDW).10 per day 30.00
so if I choose ALI CDW TP and PAI it's $220 total for 4 days...
do I need all these and what on earth is EPC? Thanks.

I just checked caribbean rent a car and can get a verna with a/c and automatic with 0% and all insurance for the same '3' days for only $144. Wow. Now to talk DH into it....
That's cheaper than booking a tour...
And I can even drive...hmmm....but I was getting excited about renting bikes. LOL.
