Anyone know what a cab fare from Tulum to Playa should cost? Thanks!

about 400p would be fair. You could probably get it for less if you try.

When they tell you the price (400 or whatever), it's good to have someone else with you to say "eh, let's take the bus". What's the bus? 40 pesos? Anyway, if they want you they will come down. By the way, I've found the ADO buses to be more comfortable than the hot, cramped taxis.

I Suggest you take a collectivo! The Collectivo's are the white mini vans with a red stripe all around the van. You just wait somewhere along the 307 and they will blink with there lights and horn to draw your attention.
Otherwise you just wave them down!
Its an easy way of transportation and it only cost about $3usd. They will drop you of downtown Playa, close to the bus station. These vans are also great if you would like to go to Xel Ha, Hidden Worlds, Dos Ojos Akumal etc... Just let the driver know where you would like to get of.......

Best way of getting where ever!

Hasta luego

Thanks Rene. I always forget the collectivos. That will be my mode of transportation on this trip down as I'm doing Akumal for a few days.

Collectivo's are great!

They are cheap, reliable and you never ever have to wait longer then 10 minutes!

my brother tried to take the bus from the airport to tulum. he realized he had to take the bus to Playa first -- which is fine. He made it to Playa, but then he walked around not sure where to get a collectivo. Is there a station of some kind?

Take the bus! They run every hour, are VERY comfortable and only cost $4US. You get a movie (heehee..dubbed in spanish) and no driving stress. LOL! I really enjoyed leaving the driving to them and will use this way of getting to Playa again, rather than driving or using a collectivo (no waiting for the van to fill up is a bonus).

I vote for the bus....comfy and not real cramped. It would take longer to get to Playa on the collectivo since they stop so often. The taxi drivers drive like maniacs, although I've had some close calls with the buses too.

Thanks for the input guys and girls! We have taken the collectivos and buses before. The reason I ask is that we will be leaving very early in the morning with luggage.Last time we were there the ADO buses did not leave until the afternoon from Tulum and the collectivos did not take luggage.Once we took the Maya Caribe bus but swore we would never do it again. It took forever and the air conditioning was not working properly, hence the question.
Does anyone know that if you paid for an extra fare for the luggage whether or not the collectivos would accept this?

As far as I know, you can carry whatever you want to on a collectivo, as long as there is room...and there seldom is room for much extra..if you have used them you know what I mean when I compare a full collectivo to a sardine in a can.

You can check the TicketBus website for scheduling

Do collectivos stop along the beach road or do you have to go into town?

Also if I want to head to ruins one morning before crowds and then hang at the beach and lunch @ Nachos, etc. would I be able to do this with collectivo? or better to taxi?

Thanks!:eat-drink:

I believe the collectivos just stick to the main highway. You could take one to the entrance to the ruins but from what I understand it is a bit of a walk in.I don't think they travel to the beach though.
The Weary Traveller Hostel in town used to have a shuttle to the beach but I do not know if they still have it or how often it runs .Correct me if I am wrong anyone.! TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTT

I know there was a collectivo that ran to/from Punta Allen once a day around 2pm..don't know if that is still running or not. It left from the area around the bus station each day.

I did see a couple of collectivo vans last weekend on the beach road, a suprize, not sure if they were private or actual collectivos though. They were partially blocked from my sight by the TOUR BUSSES that were parked along the road by the beachclubs!

I can't confirm the collectivos on the beach road either, but we did see a couple and said to ourselves "is that a collectivo?" We also saw many tour vans pass by us as we ate breakfast at Zahra one morning. One must have been a Jeep tour or something.

We have used Collectivos and taxis to get from Playa to Tulum and between. Your right about room in collectivos, I wouldn't take any more than I could keep on my lap. We still like them for travel tho. If I am correct when you stand by the road and hold your hand up to an approaching collectivo, if they flash there lights it means they are full. Good news is that another will be along soon.
We were waiting for a co;;ectivo to take us from Dos Ojos cenote back to Playa and a taxi pulled over and offered us a ride back to Playa. I asked how much and he said about 40 pesos more than a collectivo. I said I would wait and he then said he would take us for the same price as a collectivo. He was just trying to make something on his trip back to Playa after taking a fare to Tulum. He also picked up another rider on the way so he came out ok.
Totoally agre with the busses, they are very nice and cozy way to travel.

Bumping this up. The colectivos line up in Playa del Carmen on Calle 2 between Avenidas 15 and 20. Last time I took one from Playa to Tulum, it cost me...26 pesos (I think) but this was about a year and half ago so it could be higher now. And it could also just be inaccurate because I don't remember.:o

The colectivo heads South toward Tulum, stopping along the highway as it goes and collects or deposits people. I got out at San Francisco in Tulum so never did see where the colectivos go in Tulum pueblo.

Whenever I've stayed in Tulum beach area and had a car, as I've gone back and forth from town I've picked up hitchhikers. Some are tourists, but most are Tulum locals who work in the hotel zone and go back and forth to town. Last week, I picked up a couple of guys and asked if there were colectivos that went from Tulum pueblo to the hotel zone. They said that a colectivo ran twice a day, but I can't remember the times he said...I think it was something like 7 am and 2 pm.

Does anyone have more concrete knowledge? I swear I'll get better about taking notes.:D

I wonder if that's the one that goes all the way down to Punta Allen? I've heard there's one that goes down there, but I've never known the schedule.
