I haven't been in Tulum for a few years. (4).. Just wondering... Last time we were there, it took us quite a while to drive from the intersection to the entrance of the Sian Ka'an. The road was so bad that we had to drive very slowly... also, it was unpaved, which was kind of nice, but since I am staying @ Las Ranitas, I am wondering if we should get a Jeep instead of a regular car to speed things up a bit. I know Las Ranitas is only about 4 miles from the intersection, but will that take me 20 minutes, or 2 hours to drive? ;)

Not even 20 minutes...more like 5-7 minutes. :)

It's paved, but littered with topes, so you'll be slowing down often. Lee's right, though, under 10 minutes rather than 20.

There is about a hundred yard stretch next to Zamas that will slow you down but those taxis zoom back and forth down that road.

Isn't it amazing how those taxis drive that road? I was heading into town, and slowed down for the big Maya Tulum tope, then stayed slow for the upcoming bad stretch. A taxi started passing me on top of the tope, and pulled around in the very short good stretch before the bad stretch, just missing an oncoming cab picking his way through the bad stretch in the middle of the road.
Oy.

I couldn't even ride a bicycle on that road! I tired and didn't make it very far.
A hundred yard stretch - from Zamas to about where? Then after that it's paved? Really?
Does that mean that there is more taxi traffic going up and down the beach road road? Is it easier to flag one down now to go into town?

The pavement ends at the Sian Ka'an entrance arch...

I think my scooter rental days are limited. I enjoyed it tremendously even when riding in a jungle downpour. But there were times where I thought "Gee. It's safer riding my Harley in Dallas Fort Worth traffic." Probably not accurate but they did freak me out a bit.
