We did the alltournative tour a few years ago down to Punta Allen. We want to take a drive down ourselves, don't know how far we'll make it. We want to stop off somewhere along for lunch, check out some awesome beaches along the way. Can we make it to Punta Allen in a car or do we definitely have to get a jeep? Is the road much worse since Wilma or about the same? If we make it to Punta Allen, can anyone recommend someone for us to see to take us on a boat tour, I really want to see some dolphins in the wild, but I"m not interested in a full fledged tour. If we want to stop along the way, will we have time to go to Punta Allen or just make it a day of beach spots? And.. any recs for good beach spots? We're going to be driving from Barcelo Maya. We're pretty familiar with the area and driving, so not worried about that.

There are plenty of secluded beaches along the road..pick one or all, stop and enjoy.
I have eaten at Sol Caribe, food was very good. Would love to stay here sometime, this place is awesome.
The trip from Tulum took about 4 hrs, but we did stop several places along the way. Drive is slow, but from what I understand the road is passible after Wilma.

Baltazar is great for taking you on a tour. Ask at Serenidad Shardon about him. They are down the beach from Punta Allen, but still in town. we love Punta Allen and will be making our next trip down there in April.

In travelling to Punta allen, has anyone been on this road this year? Is the bridge passable, and if we rent a car, do we need a jeep or will a little old VW bug do the job? We intend to be at copal in late April, and will rent a car for a few days. Anyone else doing the same thing? I have heard the beaches onthe road are pristine, no body to bother you except the birds, and that the tours in the Sian kaan reserve are tremendous. Any suggestions?

We have friends in PA and they say the road is open and better than before Wilma. The BP bridge is fine. You shouldn't need a jeep, probably one of those old Pointers will do just fine. That's all we have ever used.

Thanks for the info. Do your friends know how long the trip takes now? We are trying to decide if we should spend a night or so in Punta allen. Thanks again.

We were just in tulum...sorry, hope this gets to you in time. We rented a scooter and headed down to about the bridge. loads of new homes along the way. The road is doable in a car. We did it a couple years ago. I have heard the same ,that it has improved. You must stay!!!!!its wonderful there and the travel time will leave you no time for fun if you dont stay. Sirena has nice accommadations and she has a guide or two with boats that took us to see dolphins. http://www.casasirena.com/punta.htm
Stay a night...or two. At one time playa was almost this small...
