View Full Version : Renting a car

I've always been a big advocate of renting a car if you're going to be in Tulum for a week. I always figure that the cost of two round trip bus fares from Cancun to Tulum, plus potentially several round trip taxi fares from the beach hotel into the Pueblo at about $4 each way would come close to equaling at least half of the weekly rental of a car. The other half is a very acceptable premium for having your own wheels whenever you want to pop into the market for another case of beer and a couple of bags of hielos or want to take off to Coba or go exploring down the beach road. And having a car greatly reduces the stress on the day it's time to head back to CUN and you're sweating out if you're going to be able to get on a bus and if it's going to be on time and if you'll miss the connection in Playa. You just go when you want to go.

And, as I always go solo I frequently offer new found friends a ride into town for supplies, dinner, etc.

I have always been able to get a cheap stick shift with A/C through Avis for about $115 a week. (with my airline employee discount) Pretty much the same rate over the past eight years. So, I was rather shocked tonight to find it would cost about $210 this year for a weeks rental.
The other majors were about the same. Continental-Rentacar was much worse.
Then I tried Travelocity. Of course I can't get a travel industry employee discount through them but I didn't need one. I got a car from Eurocar with a stick shift and air conditioning for $99 a week!
Actually I'll have it for nine days at a total of $146. Avis for nine days was going to be about $280. That's a big difference.v Like almost double!
I've never used Travelocity before because I've always got better deals through the airlines own websites but it really worked for renting a car!

And no, that does not include the price of waivers or other insurance. I let my gold card handle that. But the price does include all other fees and taxes.

I'm pleased.

Now, if I just didn't have to wait another two months and 12 days........

That's a great rate. I just hope you have enough liquid assets to cover the cost of the car in case anything goes wrong. You'll be on the hook before you're allowed leave Mexico, then when you get home you'll deal with your gold card people for reimbursement. It's my understanding the Mexican agencies won't deal directly with the card companies, so that's all on you.

Still, thanks for the tip. I'm going to go out and search around, see if anyone else has a better rate than I already have that includes all the insurances. Peace of mind is worth a chunk of change to me.

Continental was the highest you checked because they automatically include insurance in their rates, no hidden fees that I know of.

This ain't my first rodeo.
http://mail.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/50.gif
I understand the potential downside. I'm willing to accept the risks. I've been driving down there for many years. I don't drive at night. I don't drink and drive. I obey the laws and the speed limits. But I'm not one of the overly cautious tourists who are so scared to be driving in a foreign country that they drive 30 miles under the limit, which becomes even more of a hazard. (I pass them by the dozens on 307 every year.)

I also understand that a lot of folks prefer to pay the insurance premiums for the piece of mind. I respect that. I just prefer to put my money to other uses... like spending a week at Azulik.

Cheers,
Kenster

Fair enough, cowboy. ;)

But now that I'm thinking about it all, I went out to Orbitz, and while I can't find a rate that cheap for my dates (bummer), I did find a good rate. If I add their optional insurance, it's still $100 less than my current rate with Continental.

So, guys and gals, does anyone know anything about this AccessAmerica insurance offered by Orbitz? Here's what it says about the insurance available. It's not as complete as the insurances from the local companies, but $100 is $100... What do you think? Is this enough?

Oops, on re-checking my Continental reservation, I see this Orbitz deal would only save me about $50, and Continental includes an upgrade, liability insurance and multiple drivers as well as 0% deductible. So I might just stick with Jesus and co.

Still, I'm curious about that AccessAmerica insurance, and whether anyone has worked with them before.

BR is that for your vacation insurance also?? Or just the Collision / Loss Damage?? My first thought would be is it is only Collision & theft - what about the Personal Injury?? To me that is the bigger one of the two I cannot handle on my credit card.

I guess I am a proponent for the "big catastrophe" coverage. I want to know that if I am in one hummer of an accident, I have all the coverage I would hopefully need. I have been paying insurance everyday of my life on two automobiles and never needed it except for glass replacement, so has that been a waste of dollars?? No, first off, required by law, second, offers me peace of mind.

So I might just stick with Jesus and co.

I, for one, am glad that you found Jesus and are sticking with him...;-)

Seriously, this is the first time we are reserving with a local car rental (Cancun-Rent-A-Car) rather than a big name franchise. We've always taken the insurance options...which are wildly variable with the "cafeteria" plans. It just got too confusing to try to make comparisons...and nothing was apples to apples, particularly on liability limits. At some point, you just have to draw a line at what risk you are willing to take on. Ken's line is way south of mine, but he is drawing it fully informed. Lot's of folks walk in fat dumb and happy thinking. "hey, it's Hertz or Avis or Budget...it should work just like back in the US"...this is why we need to keep beating the insurance drum.

I decided to try one of the local companies mostly because I just wanted to simplify the transaction...

I know what you mean, Maya, it is nice having it all just laid out there for you, being reasonably certain that all needs are covered. Minnie, I agree with that too, the personal liability is one thing I'm most nervous about. Paying for a cheapo car is one thing, being sued by an injured local is entirely another.

BuckFuna, I'm not sure any of the regulars here have had direct experience with a wreck, but someone did post that they had an accident, called their company (Buster?) and had a replacement vehicle in short order.

I think you'll find some horror stories on LocoGringo or PlayaInfo, though. That's where I first heard the Word on insurance and took it to heart.

We're trying to figure this out still..last time went with easyway and it worked out fine. We had a discount for triple AAA and a discount for paying cash. Does anyone know if Continental has any of these discounts?

I emailed Continental and they haven't replied. Does anyone know if Easyway is part of this same company (continental/caribbean/cancun et al..)? I ask because there was a Jesus at Easyway last February when we were there. It looks like Continental is a little cheaper than Easyway from website info. Not sure if this would still be true with a cash and AAA discount.

We want a compact with A/C, probably an automatic. Last time we got a VW Pointer which was a nice car in good condition but very basic. I guess I'll have to go ahead and book before I get any questions answered from them since they haven't responded. Last year I called them on the phone and arranged it because I had questions I wanted to ask before booking...

beachreader
11th February 2008, 12:00 PM
I don't think Easyway is part of that group of 'C' companies, but Jesus is a pretty common name.

I'm paying in US$ cash because it will mean I'm paying exactly what my quote is. If I paid in pesos cash I'd be paying more because of the exchange rate back and forth, and if I paid in credit card, the same thing. They'd convert the $ rate to pesos and then back again. Something strange like that. So I'm paying in US cash. I don't know about AAA because I don't have that.

The only way I've communicated with Continental is after sending my reservation, they send a confirmation e-mail. I reply to that e-mail and he answers my questions (but they've been very busy this season so took a lot longer than he did in December).

I'm looking into cars this week, and was going to get a car from dollar via Orbitz for $230 (with just 40K collision loss/damage insurance), but then read the posts here and am reconsidering. Both Continential and cancun-rental-car are $300 for the same time but include full insurance.

I've been in two car accidents this year (driving in familar places, and not under any influence of substances) after 20 years of driving with no accidents....these things can happen suddenly, surprisingly, and under any circumstances. If it isn't your fault you have no ability to prevent it, and yet you still have to deal with sorting out the details.

I'm thinking that it's worth the extra $70 to know that someone else will deal with any headaches that might occur. Still, it does smack a little that my car will cost as much as my flight.

beachreader
11th February 2008, 01:34 PM
I know what you mean. My car is costing almost as much as what I'll be paying for 7 nights of hotels! OK, not quite as much, but 5 or 6 nights, anyway. I've got $276 or so through Continental for an automatic (I think it'll be a VW Pointer), and he's giving me an upgrade even though one wasn't available when I booked because I'm a returning customer.

When I looked again last night, though, the upgrade offer was available again, so do check that if you book with them. You go to the left of the screen first, where they show the specials, put in your dates and click on the special you want (I take the upgrade, but the full tank of gas might not be a bad choice so you won't have to buy any gas). Then it'll take you to the reservations screen and will have the upgrade logged in. Book the car you want without the upgrade and the confirmation will show that you're getting an upgrade.

I was trying to think of a way we could share the car too, but then we'd have to get you down to Tulum and me back up to the airport when I leave and that might be more trouble than it's worth for three days.

When you get the confirmation, write back and tell him you're with me, maybe he'll give you the same rate?

How do the "C" companies work as far as pick-up and drop-off? Seems like I've read that they meet you at the airport then drive you to their office, and you fill out paperwork and leave from there. Is this about right? What about drop-off? Thanks in advance.. I'm thinking about going with one of these companies because I like all the insurance that is included. However, if it's going to take an extra hour or so to get the car vs. a company inside the airport, it might not be worth it in my situation.

PhyllisB
11th February 2008, 02:56 PM
They pick you up at the airport, take you to their office (ideally, to their Cancun office, about 5 minutes from the airport). It didn't take us long to go through the paperwork, etc - maybe 10 mins - you want to check that car over carefully and make sure they have every little ding noted on that little sheet!

We also dropped it off at the airport -- right back at the same spot where they had the car waiting when we arrived.

I've been renting from Avis at the Cancun airportf or several years. The last three times I've been in there, my agent was Jose. Nice guy.

Someone told me that their waiter at Zamas was named Jose! It has to be the same guy, moonlightling in Tulum. I mean, come on! Dark haired, speaks Spanish fluently, named Jose???? What are the odds???

I think that my Jesus at Easyway was a different guy; I feel like I'd be dissing him to say it but he didn't meet your description..more average appearance and height. His english was very good though and like I mentioned in another thread, they did offer us all cervezas for the road! And as my husband just said he really liked our Jesus (not sure if the cerveza offer had anything to do with it..)

As far as I can tell though, Easyway is not as cheap as the "Cs".. though they did respond quickly to emails and aside from the price difference we had a pretty flawless experience..

Awesome snarkiness Kenster...but speaking for myself, I was just trying to see if these smaller rental car places we all talk about were connected..

lazydog
11th February 2008, 11:30 PM
Well, he wasn't amazing looking or anything, but not unattractive, and he seemed taller than average. (oh and he upgraded me to that new car, so anyone who does that probably seems better looking) And the reason the discussion about Jesus comes up is because there has always been some confusion around the three C car rentals. Are they the same company or not. It seems that Jesus rents for all three. None of the other guys had Jesus for names, there was George also and Frank. I really don't think I was generalizing about the Jesus name.
Or...maybe they all agree to use the Jesus name so if there are any complaints, hey Jesus did it!

As for Jesus, I've actually only e-mailed with him. When I picked up my car in December, I worked with Eduardo, another very nice guy.

Kenster, your comments may be intended as funny, but they sure come off like cracks intended to make us sound ignorant, even racist. Not cool.

If we were all working with several rental car companies in Kalamazoo, some of which were apparently run by the same folks, and two different guys named "Kevin" came up, don't you think it plausible to ask if they worked for the same group?

This thread has been dormant for a while but I have been out of the country for much of the time since the last post was submitted. Regarding "All" the insurance coverage. Just got a credit card bill for $222.48 (American) for a broken key. This is Jesus at "Continental Rent a Car/ America Car Rental' there in Cancun. It appears the ignition key was/got broken, even though it worked fine. I was told that the insurance does not cover accessories. Since when is a key an accessory?

Jesus told me that the $222.48 is what the dealer charges them. Needless to say I am a little upset. If I had been in an accident or the car was stolen I would be covered. BUT, if a worn out key breaks it costs you almost as much as the whole weeks rental.

Additional coverage is available by purchasing the optional ALI (Additional Liability Coverage) at the time of rental. The cost for ALI is

You might want to check out the all-inclusive websites (Easyway, Continental, Buster), and see what they include in "all-inclusive". I think that you'll need more than just this standard insurance Hertz is including.

What if you hit a Mexican national? You'll need liability for that. Theft, collision, loss, all that stuff. I also like having the zero deductible option, though I know that doesn't necessarily mean it's all free (see Maineacs' experience).

Rental cars seem to be just one of the many subjects your an expert on!

We currently have Avis booked for 11 days, Ford Fusion, automatic, AC, unlimited miles:

Rental - $36/day (this is all we had to reserve with our credit card)
Collision - $30/day
Liability - $12/day (both of these are paid upon arrival)

Total - $78/day
Seems high to me, but I understand people have been happy with Avis and that they are right at the airport.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Unfortunately, the insurance does pretty much double the cost of the rental. Kinda stinks that way. Have you compared prices at all with other companies? $78 a day does seem pretty high to me. That would be $780 for ten days? That really seems like a lot. But if it's in line with the quotes from other companies then you're kinda stuck with it.

Contiential is about $62/day for comparable vehicle and insurance. Probably not as convienient as Avis, but about $200 cheaper.

I can understand wanting to go with a "good" rental car company in MX but for $200, I'll take my chances. I tend to think car rental is very hit or miss -- some folks have great experiences with a company and there are always a handful of folks who don't. But you might also check out Executive Car Rental -- I've never heard a bad thing about them: http://www.executive.com.mx/

They are generally more expensive than Easyway/Continental but they might still come in cheaper than Avis.

Well, that helps to explain why the $700+ figure seemed high to me. I've never rented full size. You're probably right that with 4 people with luggage for 10 days, you'll probably want the full size. Especially if you're overpacking! tank tops? flip flops? shorts? swimsuits? ready to go! :D

We have utilized Hertz in the past, I am arriving in October and I am looking for a new car rental place. After reading posts on Playainfo I think I am going to give easycar a try, I will also look at continental....website links would be appreciated.

Hertz has given vehicles which contain the previous renters garbage, tried to sneak low fuel levels, no vacuum after previous renter. Not huge deals, but when you stand in line for 30 - 45 minutes and have a ways to drive it is a pain, the game of who can outwit the tourist gets old.

The other problem I have with Hertz :dollarsign: and I am sure this is with many of the Rentals at CUN the charge for the extra insurance is absolutely mind blowing to me. After an incredible rate with Hertz online and arriving at the counter to find out my excellent 120.00 rate for just over two weeks was going to sky rocket by 500.00 for the insurance I almost fell over laughing. After calling the manager my insurance was lowered by over 200.00 ( the same coverage as 500.00 )and I rec'd an upgrade, dirty but an upgrade no less. He also gave me his card and asked that next time I rent to call the CUN Hertz office directly and I would be treated better... What the heck does that mean?????

When returning a Hertz car in CUN I have had the easiest time, not issue what so ever. When I return from a week or two in Mahahual the vehicle is well travelled and usually dirty or dirtier than when it was put into my hands. Oh yeah, they take the front liscence plate off, if you do not notice when you are renting and pointing out the dents etc they will charge you upon your return. In Mahahual they remove your Plaquette if they feel you have created a violation of their making...lol. oops off topic
I personally, after arriving back home  sat with our company insurance agent and had every insurance issue explained to me. I do believe that someone is getting fat pockets on the over inflated pricing of the insurance in CUN and I so wish I could find a company who would honestly rent good quality vehicles so we can all start our vacations etc on a more happy note. It should not be an issue, it should be clear and understandable, language barriers are understandable and of course excusable, it just annoys me that no one seems to know exactly what the heck we really should be paying for our insurance therefore we all complain, but pay because we need vehicles.

I am considering purchasing and storing a vehicle so I am in control of my own costs....lol. I am sure that is another issue all together.

I just checked Hotwire.com and a compact car is about $55/week.
Is that insanely cheap? I rented a VW bug for $75/day back in 1994. I think I'll be renting a compact unless I can't get down the road to Ocho Tulum or Hemmingway. Do I need 4wd or is a regular car ok?

Actually, the economy cars were that price for a week. Compacts were about $14 more per week. Checked Hotwire this am - $9/day for economy. Expedia had a compact through Hertz for $55/week. We are traveling at the end of October.

You're right...that is the weekly charge, but does not include any insurance. The fine print also states: * Rates are shown in US dollars. Total cost for nondiscounted, regular-rate rentals is an estimate based on the agency's published rates, taxes and fees; actual charges will be billed by the agency when the car is returned."

Please let us know the final cost when you return. BTW, I would suggest adding the insurance. If this price is legit, it would be of interest to us all to be able to save $$. Thanks for the info. :)

Ditto Lynnette (I'm doing that a lot lately :)), but to answer your other question, you don't need 4WD for the Tulum beach road. It's paved all the way down to the arched entrance to the biosphere, and even that road is much improved. You'll be fine in any reasonable car; I'm more worried about damage from the topes than anything else!

We always rent from Avis...No problems. Costly for 2 weeks as we get the insurance, FULL! But they aren't necesarrily the cheapest. Sometimes you get what you pay for and I just am not a gambler. I want to be covered and safe and RELAXED with NO WORRIES in a foreign country..we just budget it into the trip fund!
Better safe than broke and stressed. (We go on vacation to get rid of stress, don't we?)
I have the Avis direct number on a card, somewhere i am sure.
Maybe calling them directly is a good idea. Dave speaks the language and can maybe get a better rate. We go end of Oct and havent reserved anything yet..it's usually a Jetta or similar. We had a smaller one, one year and it basically was not comfortable, then rented a Jeep another year and it RAINED and RAINED and the bugs got in, plus you have no trunk, you have no security as in a trunk so, again, this coming trip I iwill stick to the Jetta size.
Let you know what we find out... Pricey Pricey Pricey... but sometimes the lack of stress and having good experiences is worth the pricey price.:)

After we took an Executive rental to Punta Allen, it was covered with mud. While looking through the "rental car bible", to see if we had to wash the under carraige, we found a clause that said they were not responsible for any damge incurred on an unpaved area. This included "stone parking lots"! Kind of an eye-opener. I don't know what would have happened if we needed them in Punta. Glad I read that after the trip, because we had alot of fun "cruising" the road!

These companies put a lot of stuff in the fine print. I'm sure that originally it started because they didn't want people baha-ing all over the Boca Paila or in the jungle, but it means they can nail you for a flat tire caused by a stone parking lot.

I'm thinking it's the little guys who care more about this sort of thing than the big companies, but if they push it too hard, we might all just quit renting cars altogether and then where would they be?

(This is said with some hope that I won't get nailed for something like this myself).

Even though we have always rented cars from the local companies, I think the big national chains (Avis, Hertz, etc.) would probably be the same. We're still renting in a foreign country and different rules apply.

When I rented twice with Thrifty, they barely glanced at the car when I brought it back. I grabbed my bag and the receipt and jumped in the shuttle bus.

When I rented twice with Continental, they checked it with a fine-toothed comb.

Might just be whoever the manager was at the time, not a big deal.

I know this has been written before, but I did take pictures of the vehicle when we picked it up and they do check it over with a fine tooth comb. I joked about the sheet which lists all the dents and dings looking like a "spiders-web" there were so many lines on it!! I really think it is a money maker for them and a contest ~ see how many times they can collect money on any one dent. I really detest the practice, but it is pretty standard in Mexico. So take the pictures so that you can prove what was there and wasn't. Don't forget the trunk, absence of jacks and spare tires.

I know when I rented from Buster he thought the car was really dirty when we returned it ~ which it was, it had rained and we were on the unpaved part of the Boca Paila road ~ I do think he was trying to collect money for a car wash from us and we just refused to donate. I guess what I am saying is don't cave right away ~ discuss, argue some, as they know we are on our way to the airport and are nervous about missing a plane. They may just say forget it. I know we weren't paying to wash a car we rented. How would that go over here in the states??

Of course, here in the States, we get almost-brand-new cars with full tanks of gas that have all working parts and have been thoroughly cleaned before we get them. And our insurance works.

So I'm kind of thinking there's just about nothing about renting in Mexico that is the same as renting in the States! :D

As a comparison, I just got a quote from Gecko in Bucerias, for our October trip. For $300, we have 5 days, ALL insurance/taxes, VIP pickup at the airport and they will take us to Puerto Vallarta/Romantic Zone for the last leg of our vacation. I understand that will save us $50-60 just in taxis fees. We're renting a Jetta, auto with ac and they'll have a full tank of gas for us. Gecko is owned by an American, so maybe he's using some of the standards that we are used to here in the States. I'll still take photos of all the dings, though.

I am a Northern Canadian Woman, I prefer trucks:). I still have not even attempted to rent a vehicle for October, I guess I should get on that. I a have currently emailed a new company in Mahahual and if they are renting vehicles I will bus down to Mahahual and rent while I am there and not support the CUN or Playa companies. May be an option I am happy with, I have bussed before and it was great, just need to bring a blanket as the bus is chilly during the trip.
Hope all is well for everyone.

Wilfam - we are planning on getting our own car in a couple of years as well. I know there are some stipulations with owning a car in Mexico, but it can be done.

We've rented from Thrifty, Continental and lastly Easyway. All were good. The car we recently rented from Easyway was a bit older - a VW Pointer wagon which was a cheaper and great alternative to a truck (however Ron, I like your truck idea). We shopped and packed that car with everything and also carried lumber and bicycles back to the casa. We've always purchased the insurance in the past. We finally found out our credit union Visa will cover the insurance, so now our rentals are a good deal. Not all credit cards will do this, you must call to verify this.

Off Topic - Lynette, we were in Bucerias for an afternoon a couple of years ago. We were staying in PV and got conned into a timeshare presentation, but it ended up fine as we found that was a cute little town and we got a boat for 1/2 a day to take us out snorkeling and to Yelapa. Have you been before? Next time we go, I'd love to check out Sayulita as well. That's where the author & wife of Gringos in Paradise lives.

We visited Yelapa over twenty years ago, and loved it. We hiked up to a beautiful waterfall and fell in love with the gorgeous bay. From what I have heard, it's changed a lot (there's now a little restaurant by my remote waterfall), but still worth the boat ride for the day. We will be renting a car and checking out La Cruz, Sayulita and San Francisco for sure. Your Bucerias recommendation makes me even more excited about this trip...I will miss the Caribbean water and white beaches of Tulum, though.

Great links Minniemex!

Another plug for Easyway - their service is really great! We just returned home - had a wonderful time at our casa and we sure enjoyed getting to know Tulum (and area) more. We had a couple of issues with the car (one was our own fault - lost the key at the beach!) and the other was mechanical and they rescued us both times very quickly!

Lynette, you are there now and I'm sure having a good time. I wish I would have travelled to so many of the places we all love years ago and been able to say "I remember when". Oh well, I'll get that opportunity now on some of the new paths we're taking.

I checked most of the threads on car renting.
Have few questions / comments:

1) Has anyone used E-Z Rent a Car? Seems different from the Easyway discussed here (http://www.e-zrentacar.com/locations~airport-rental_car+car_rental_location-Cancun_Mexico.html). Orbitz lists them with the lowest price

2) On the insurances. All MasterCards have Masterrental Insurance. But it covers only CDW.

3) At least my US insurance (GEICO) covers NOTHING in MX - just called them. I mention it, since few people here said they relied on theirs. I hope they have checked.

4) How about getting a short insurance from USA which some companies issue? Has anyone used something similar?

Welcome to the board evZENy!!

Relying on your "Credit Card" insurance is a matter of personal preference. I have never used this option, as I find paying just those few extra dollars provides me with lots of peace of mind. If I have an accident I have full coverage right now and I don't have to use my credit card to pay for all damages and then work to get the monies back.

I know there is auto insurance available online for Mexico ~ Again, I have not used it or read of anyone using it for a short term rental. This would be something I would consider if I was driving down in my own car.

I have not used E-Z Rent a Car ~ I did check out their site and they seem reasonable but only show the cost for Liability ~ I prefer the all insurances and zero deductibles. Again, this is a personal preference.

This thread has loads of info on car rental and a lot of different opinions. Reading it would help you make your decision I think.

For this current trip, I am renting from Continental ~ I had found a cheaper rate for a larger car on special at Easyway, but Continental met their price so I am staying with Continental.

Check out the "ticker" thread too ~ we love tickers here!!

I'm trying to think if I have seen any reports from Alamo or Thrifty. Never saw any reports on the others on the list. We most routinely hear about folks who use Easyway, Caribbean/Continental, and there was one international chain... maybe National? Read up on the trip report forum to find out where folks rent from. WindyCity used an international company but I just don't remember which, and then someone who started a report recently used another. I think maybe Dale...

But now I'm going with Continental.

beachreader

I have not. I would totally let my credit card handle it, but what I've decided I don't want to do is to be on the hook for the entire charge and then have to go back to my cc company when I get home and deal with getting reimbursed.

If the Mexican car company would deal directly with my cc co., I'd let them handle it every time, but I don't want to be the middleman.

Dale
21st November 2008, 11:19 PM
and then someone who started a report recently used another. I think maybe Dale...

Veeeery good...It was me. I used National for the second time. I have also used Avis twice. This time National gave me a rate that was the same as Caribbean and with all the insurance. I have never had any problem with National. In fact, the first time I used them, on the way to the airport we stopped to fill up and the car wouldn't start. They had someone there in about 10 minutes and had us on our way. No problem. Avis actually had better cars, but that's not always best.;) The rates Avis has been quoting lately has been ridiculous. Also, the first two times I didn't get the insurance and charged it on my AMEX, but the last two times I kinda thought better of it.

A couple of years ago in California, I got rear ended while driving a rental. She was uninsured, illegal, just out of jail, just got her car out of impoundment, and my insurance had to pay for the damage. AMEX picked up my deductible. It ticked me off because they impounded her car again so my insurance company could put a lien on it to pay for the damage to the rental car. That was just too much trouble for my insurance company. They just paid for the damage. I told my agent that if my insurance went up in the next two years I was gone.......It didn't go up.

Oh well sorry to digress. National has been great and competitively priced.
Don't you wish you had skipped all that other crap and just jumped to the bottom line?

beachreader
22nd November 2008, 10:09 AM
Dale, using the National site, how did you know which insurances to include in your quote? One of the things I like about the Mexican companies is that they just have one quote for "all insurance", making it really easy.

Last time I checked a big chain site, and I found the place where you can add insurance, I didn't know which ones to select, so I selected all of them and, of course, the rate was astronomical. I'm sure i don't need all of that, so I'm just curious how you figured out your insurance.

Dale
22nd November 2008, 03:30 PM
Well this is what I used and it is printed on the online form as you are filling it out.

Additional Items
Collision Damage Waiver ($14.99/Day)
Personal Accident Insurance ($3.99/Day)
Third Party Liability ($9.99/Day)

A major credit card and a valid driver's license in the name of the renter will be required at the time of rental. A deposit in the amount of $1,000 USD will be held on the credit card for small vehicles and $2,000 USD for SUV and Vans. This deposit will be held in addition to the rental charges. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) inlucdes Theft Protection (TP). Deductible Protection coverage (DP) is sold localy at a cost of $6.99 USD per day. This coverage reduces CDW deductible amount to $0. CDW does not include Third Party Liability (TPL). In Mexico, Third Party Liability (TPL) is mandatory for all cars at a cost of $9.99 per day. All one-way rentals are subject to a dropcharge.

As I recall, and this was a while ago, I called on this and with the three insurance options they offered, the only thing I would have been responsible for was a deductible of $1000.00. You can then buy insurance when you rent, at the counter, for $6.99/day to make that ZERO. Now I had trip insurance that covered any deductible that I incurred on a rental car, so I did not purchase it.

Now with the 3 offered insurances on the website, I got a 4 door compact w/ AC, manual for $345.43. Caribbeans rate was $350.00, so I thought that was pretty good. I just went on National's site and put in the same dates for 2009 and got a rate for $482. OUCH!!

We are renting a car for the first time in Mexico. I got a rate of 11.42 a day for a Nissan Tsuru or equivalent from Thrifty. I think that's the best rate I've ever gotten for a rental car anywhere!

I called MasterCard to find out what car insurance I would have in Mexico by using the card. I have $50,000 principal collision coverage with zero deductible. The stipulations are that I use the card for entire rental transaction and that I decline the CDW at the Cancun airport. I will probably buy the personal liability at the airport, although it's not required by MasterCard for renting in Mexico. It is required for renting in the US, though. It also turns out that the card gives me all kinds of other trip insurance including lost or delayed luggage, trip cancellation, emergency medical, etc.

I have another question. We are staying at the Tierra Maya in Xcalak. Does anybody know how the road is from town to the hotel? I know it's a mile or so north of town.

Thanks!

I spoke with a representative of America/Cancun/Continental Rent-a-Car agency today, and discovered that there is a distinction between these companies. They all have the same office location and phone number but offer different products. If you rent through America you will pay a lower rate, but you will not get 0% deductible. If you rent through Continental you will pay a higher rate and get 0% deductible. Needless to say if you want 0% deductible you will pay less by going through Continental. For example, 3 days rental with economy car would cost $30 for 0% deductible with America but only $24 with Continental (just the price of getting 0% deductible, not the whole rental). This fact explains why there are different websites even though they seem to be the same company.
I read a post somewhere (maybe on Locogringo) where someone complained that America Car Rental, despite being an "all-inclusive" rental company, informed them upon arrival that they had to pay $10/day extra for 0% deductible. Of course this was amidst an array of complaints about America, which I will ignore in this post, but I wanted to shed light on this particular issue.
Hope this is useful. I'm renting through Continental next week and heading out for Tulum.
All the Best

Caribbean Car Rental – It was our second time renting with these guys. As we were late, we called them as soon as we made it to the curb. It took us about 15 minutes to connect, but I recognized Julio as he walk by in his America Car Rental shirt. He’s a really nice guy. When we arrived at the off-site rental location, we completed the necessary paper work including the somewhat nerve-racking leaving an open credit card receipt as a deposit. We were also informed that they were out of full-sized cars, so they gave us a mini-Van for the same price.

Even more impressive was the service that we received after returning the car. In our haste to get to the airport, I forgot to get any paperwork verifying the return of the car much less getting the deposit slip back. So, I e-mailed them asking for some confirmation. It took a few days, but I got the following response:

Dear Mr. Barber,

Thank you for your e mail. Finally received a report form Operations and Accounting. Attached, please find copy of electronic voucher of your account with no charges. Julio Ortiz, our airport office manager, sends his regards and thanks you for the nice photograph you sent him, through me.

Cordially,
Julio Davila

Needless to say, I was relieved, very much appreciated their service, and would recommend them.

After relaying the information I learned about renting cars from this site, my boyfriend opted to go with Hertz vs.the local guys and to let the credit card insurance cover any problems and not get all the extra insurance. He's in the travel industry, a Hertz Presidents Gold member and has rented cars from Hertz in countries all over the world without any issues. Now he know he should have taken all of your advice after all!

About 12 different dings and dents were noted on the paperwork when we picked the car up. Upon our return, the guys checked over the car and we went inside to settle our bill. While waiting for the shuttle, they came over to inform us that they had noticed a small ding on the rear bumper that wasn't accounted for when they originally checked out the car, and they would have to repaint the whole bumper and charge us for the repair. We protested and went back and forth with them, asked for a manager, none was available, etc. etc. etc.....

On our layover home, we checked the Visa account and Hertz charged our card $1,000 for the damage. We immediately called the credit company to deny the charge and are following up to dispute it with Hertz, but I just wanted to get the word out to watch out if you plan to rent from Hertz in Cancun.

Most of us have digital cameras now and I highly recommend that you take pictures of the car as they are recording the dings. Someone else also said to take a picture of the person showing you the dings and dents. It makes good sense. I just take pictures until I have the whole car covered including inside the trunk and the interior of the car. You may have been able to prove that the ding was there when you picked up the car.

We are planning five days April 5-10 in 2010 and looking to rent a car from Cancun. The rate from Cancun Car Rental, America, Caribbean, and Continental are about the same ($210). All state insurance is included in this rate at various levels. However, EasyWay is quoting only a base of $210 that goes to $255.30 after choosing all the insurance option (ALI, CDW, TP, PAI, EPC). Am I looking at a bait-n-switch tactic once I get to the rental office? Can any one offer their recent experience of renting with any of these companies? Thanks all!

minniemex
5th January 2010, 08:04 AM
Yes, there have been lots of us who have rented from the above companies.

There is no "bait & switch" going on. It is just the differences in pricing. Some companies offer the zero deductible & all insurances included up front, some offer it as an add on. Most of the majors operate like that, quoting a price for just the vehicle rental and then adding on the insurances when you get there. It really does double the price of the car. Some people choose not to buy the insurances (and use their CC car ins. coverage) but I do for peace of mind. I can then truly relax on my vacation.

If you do a search ( instructions here ~ http://tulum.info/showthread.php?t=1663) you will find more information than you ever needed on car rental!

Just an FYI here and only based in hearsay ~

There seems to be some problems with renting from Thrifty. Also, a good lesson learned. Never leave anything in the car. I know sometimes it can't be helped, but you are opening yourself up to losing it all. Just be sure to take what you can't afford to lose with you.

Thanks Minniemex and all those on Playa.info for the information. After reading so many negative things about 'American' rental companies, we decided to go with a local agency - Continental. It’s a shame having everything stolen but what probably hurts the most is loosing a camera fully of vacation pictures.

Just my two cents after having traveled extensively throughout the country, I always remove the chip from the camera when not in use. It may be a little inconvenient but I have never lost any pictures that way.

Dale

The thought of losing my camera and pictures on vacation is sickening!!! In Mexico, wherever I go, my camera goes also. Seriously!! I go nowhere without it. Scared I'm going to miss a shot.

Anyway, I had THIS (https://www152.americanexpress.com/premium/car-rental-insurance-coverage/home.do?om_rid=AICvSt&om_mid=_BLUp2tB74YRu3O&om_lid=axp9) sent to me from American Express. First of all I have NOT read all of this yet or really checked into it, but it is an offer of Premium Car Rental Insurance for only $24.95 per rental. I'm going to check into it to see if it is OK. I thought anybody who has AMEX and rents cars may be interested in checking it out.

Lynnette
19th January 2010, 10:37 AM
That's great info, Dale...I'll check that out with my AMEX!! I have a Platinum Visa card that offers great insurance coverage, too. However, after talking to a rep, it DOES NOT COVER local rental companies in Mexico. It always pays to get the details and in writing!!!

dorado dave

It pays to have on the papers of your rental agreement;
Rel.Resp Colision/CDW. if you "bump" something.
I pay for auto insurance in Mexico.
Hoping you are covered by your credit card may land
u in jail for a while. Check the fine print before renting.
Some people live closer to the edge than i and skip
coverage. That is a true adventure, hopefully w/ a
happy ending.:D

Has anyone used Zipp before????
I compared about 1/2 dozen rates from
below site using same car and full insurance including Continental,
Cancun, And Easy. For 9 days with full insurance I am paying $324
for 9 days. This is $50 to $100 cheaper than other companies.
I havent seen Zipp mentioned on this board.

http://www.cancunmap.com/transportation/car-rental.html

Thanks,
Paul

As an update, when full insurance was added, Zipp became more expensive and did not offer 0% decuctible. I went with American which included 0% deductible....See my post on American below.

I checked around and found American to be one of the better deals as it includes full insurance with 0% deductible which is important in Mexico.
My rental is for 9 days. For 7 days it was $282.00
American is owned by same people who own Caribbean Rentals, Cancun Rentals, Continental and probably a few others. They all include all coverage with 0% decuctible in their rates. My rental showing insurance info is below. Regardless who you go with, make sure you read this:

Thanks so much Paul,

This sounds reassuring. We'll go with this outfit, but I was wondering if you now what type of rig you are getting. My wife is recovering from quite a knee operation, and I can't see her swinging her leg into one of those sub compacts.

Hi,
we just got back from Tulum. We rented a car right at the airport from Executive. It was $278 for 8 days, all insurance included. It was a 4 door Honda. Mid week the car would not start or jump but they sent a mechanic down and switched cars with us. It was kind of a pain, but they handled it well and as quickly as possible and you do take those chances when renting a car in Mexico.

They tried to tell us it was something we did but we were like 'yeah right, don't even try it' and they dropped it. My advice is to be as thorough as possible when picking up the car and noting any problems/dings and be tough if they try and push something back on you.

sorry if the answer is posted already, but, can you rent a car in tulum? i was planning on bussing or cabbing it to tulum from cancun airport, and then renting a car in tulum to get around. if there are no rental cars in tulum, is it fairly easy to get around by bicycle?? its been 10 years since i've been in tulum, i dont remember much......thanks!
oh, and how far is the south end of beach (near milamores hotel area) to town? <3

Ana y Jose rents cars (they are located 2 doors down from Cabanas La Luna), there is a car rental office (I forget the name) in the same plaza as the San Francisco grocery store, and there is an Executive Car rental location on 307 in the pueblo of Tulum. Bikes are great during the day, but if you plan to venture out for dinner even along the beach road, I'd rent a car for your whole stay.

To answer your question about the car rental ~ there are numerous places in Tulum Pueblo to rent also. Executive and Busters comes to mind right away. I know there are others, but I can't remember them right now. I would suggest though if you are going to rent you reserve online before you go. The rates are much better that way then if you just do a walk up.

Milamores is approximately 10KMS to the stop light by the San Francisco. Here is a link to a map which shows where all the properties are located on the beach road. (Boca Paila) http://www.todotulum.com/tulum-mexico-maps.php

There are numerous places in Tulum to rent a car, but I really don't have updated info. If you rent for only one day, the prices are usually double. I would suggest posting your question on the main forum. There are many people who have recently rented bikes, and can help you out with that type of rental, also.

There's a Hertz car rental in the same parking lot where the San Francisco grocery is. There's another Executive office that on the east side of the hwy just before you get to the San Francisco.

If you want to pick up your car at or near the airport, I give props to Easyway. They are easy and honest. The same people working there for the past few years. We lost keys at the beach one day, they came and brought us a new set and didn't even charge us. Another time there was a problem with the battery and we had to be at the airport, they rushed down with a new car for us. This is who we normally use unless they are out of cars.

For my trip next week, I rented from Easyway. Nissan Tsuru GSII auto., air conditioning, and unlimited mileage and full insurance. It worked out to $279 for 1 week, which is quite reasonable compared to the car rental prices around where I live! This is the first time I've ever rented a car, so I hope things go smoothly. I'll let everyone know how my experience with Easyway goes. :)

Used American, and all was great, except of course that I fell off of a pretty good sized wave, broke three ribs, and ended up in the Hospiten hospital in Cancun for a number of days. My convalescing wife was a trooper as usual.

We've been renting from Easyway for about 4 years now and have been very happy with their customer service and Jesus has been there for at least that long. We spent an anniversary morrning beachh walking at Xcacel. We decided to go for a swim and set the keys in the coffee cup. After a refreshing plunge in the lovely Caribe, we were blissfully happy and started heading back to the car. Mark was swinging his arms & holding his mug when I looked over and said, 'oh no!" The keys! We turned around and looked behind us 50 yards or so and saw nothing on the smooth sand. We walked back to where we'd been brushing the sand with our feet and even digging in the area we'd been at until we gave up. When we returned home to our casa, we called Easyway and they were there in an about 90 minutes with a new key and never charged us a dime. Another time they came to our resuce as the car we'd been driving had a small fire in the engine as I was returning from dropping off laundry and just before we were leaving for the airport. We figured out that the battery had been installed backwards and we had been driving around for a couple of weeks this way. They knew our time crunch and sent someone down with a car immediately. They left us the new car to drive to the airport and they drove the other car back. I'm almost certain that we wouldn't have received such personal service anywhere else. So, for us Jesus is the way. :)

I kind of compare it to banking with a local hometown bank or credit union vs. a big bank. Personal service.....and the cold Sol adds a nice touch after a long travel day. :beerchug:

I am super glad to hear all the good reports on Easyway. We are renting with them for the first time for our next trip. I emailed for a quote and my only specification was that we didn't want a car as small as the Atos. Jesus gave me a quote for a Dodge Attitude at $366 for 10 days with all insurance, zero deductible. In the past we've rented from American/Carribean/Cancun and never really had a problem with them but I wasn't crazy about the Timeshare guys that they share their offices with and their prices were higher than Easyway.

Bummer about the ribs Rob. That must have put a big damper on the vacation!

I've been to Tulum MANY times and am actually in the process of moving down there very soon!
I've rented from Continental and switched to Easy Way for my last two trips. Had two bad experiences with Continental and had to switch.
Easyway were wonderful and straight forward, up front contract, etc.

Hi minnimex!

Thanks!
I'm pretty excited... I've been so many times, that I decided to take the plunge and go explore a little.
I was planning on posting an intro and also my services in the service forum.
This is my latest blog post on my plans... my coming out, if you want to call it that... I have a yoga and fitness business where I live so this was a way of letting people know what was going on in more detail than after I told them personally:
http://www.pureblissyoga.ca/2011/10/look-out-rapunzel/

I have a yoga retreat at Shambala coming up in February (4 to 11)... $200 off right now for sign-ups before Nov 1:-)
Am definitely planning on doing/offering yoga classes. I teach a blend of vinyasa/anusara. Very alignment based, so there is an element of physicality, while learning how to move/breath and live from the heart. Accessible to everyone, no matter what your level or non-level;-) I also teach yin and restorative yoga... perfect for dealing with muscle, alignment, hormonal and immune system issues... or if you just want to unwind after your flight to Tulum. I have a fabulous Travel Yoga class... perfect for reconnecting and getting your vaca started with a breath of fresh air after the stress of traveling.
Right now I know I will be teaching at Yoga Shala and will be offering privates and group classes to whomever wants to book me. I am not sure of other places, at the moment, as I prefer to be loyal to one yoga studio, but will definitely be available to go to any of the resorts on the beach or condos in town to teach for the private sessions.
I will know my schedule for Yoga Shala once I am on my way... I hope to start to head to Tulum in December.
Very excited! Big changes!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Besos!

This does seem kind of expensive? Is it because you have full Mexican insurance? I saw somewhere here they paid $99.00 per week. Plus insurance?

April, there are lots of threads about the pros and cons of renting with or without insurance. My thinking is that I'd rather have the all-inclusive Mexican insurance than have any hassles with my insurance company when I get home (and pay whatever is owed on the car in cash before I leave Mexico). If someone paid $99 for a week, they likely didn't have any insurance included. And when you start adding the insurances a la carte it really adds up to more than what the local companies charge for their all-inclusive insurance with zero deductible. There are important exceptions to all insurance--any damage that occurs while the driver is under the influence (obvious), any damage to tires or axles (to prevent people from feeling like they can go 4-wheeling in a compact), loss of keys or license plates. But I still like feeling covered, even if I'm paying a bit more than I absolutely need to.

Just my two cents.

Just a caveat: If you are not using the full insurance, you will be liable for anything that happens there. Also, check with your US insurance if you think you will be covered under it. Most likely Mexico is an exclusion.

We always get full coverage in Mexico. It's not THAT much more and it's worth the peace of mind in my opinion. Anyway we rented from Easyway for the first time this time and got a good deal but I am NOT happy with them because they gave us a car with a paper license plate in the window ... not real plates. I tried to decline it but they insisted it didn't matter. For the first time in all our trips to MExico we got pulled over by the Policia because we had paper plates. They inspected the plates and the car and trunk ... it ended OK, but it gives them a reason to pull you over. Going forward I won't rent from any company that won't confirm real plates on the car.

We rented a car for part of our time in Tulum - we drove down to Palenque and visited a few places along the way. I just wanted to say that we rented from Avis, on the West side of the highway in Playa Del Carmen and had a great experience. No hassle, no bait and switch. We reserved online two days before and showed up to find the car we requested was there and ready. Was it our cheapest option, no. The car was brand new and worked well. The service was great and I'd use them again any time.

We rented from Thrifty at the airport two weeks ago. We got a brand new car with plastic on the seats and a paper plate in the window. We also got pulled over but it took two minutes for them to assure everything was fine and then chatted with us about where we were going and to have a good time. It was no problem. I would rather have a new car with a paper in the window than a beater with real plates that I have to worry about. But that's just me. There was absolutely no problem with renting and returning that vehicle.

After reading all the reviews i think Easyway would be the best, but i can't find a link for a pick-up station in Tulum Pueblo. :(

Could one of you guys tell me what i am missing or where i could find more information?

Another question of mine is, how the procedure with the gas will be? Pick-up full and returning full as well?

Many thanks in advance for all your help! :)

Hello
IN December 2011 we rented from easyway and it was easy. They pick you up outside the arrival area with a name card then transport you to their offsite site located on Hwy 307, five minutes to the Cancun airport so its so easy to drive from and dropoff when you return. When you return they drop you back at the airport and took like 15 minutes with the return and drive back. I am not sure about Tulum rental but you are close to Cancun so might be the same price. I think if you drop the car off in Tulum there is a surcharge.

They do not take your credit card number in case of something happening as some rentals do.
We got a compact with full mexican insurance as it is absolutely recommened and only paid $206.00 with tax. You dont pay airport tax as you arent renting at the aiport which can be additional 15%.

No complications and we had the car 1/2 full of gas and returned the same. In mexico we asked them how much to fill the tank in pesos so when we needed gas we only gave the gas station enough as I hear some will overcharge plus a little tip.

So will rent again from them for sure and they do speak english.

If you're just looking for a one-day, there are places in Tulum you can rent from. Easyway doesn't have a location in Tulum. I asked them once how much to pick up in Tulum and they were going to charge me a stiff fee, but Shebug picked up there and they didn't charge her extra, so it's worth asking them.
