Hello everyone! After staying in Playa del Carmen for several years, this year we want to split our time between Playa and Tulum. We have gotten much valuable information from this Board, but still need help with a few things. We plan on spending most of our time in Tulum on the beach relaxing. Having said all this, would you recomend a cooler for keeping beverages in the room and on the beach? Will we need a beach umbrella? In your opinion would going to a beach club be a better option than using the hotel beach? Thanks:)

If you are staying at Cabanas Tulum, you are going to be on one of the most beautiful stretch of beach in Tulum, but a visit to Parasio is always a good time. There really aren't any "Beach Clubs" such as what you find in Playa, like Mammita's etc. I doubt you will be dissatisified with the beach you find at Cabanas Tulum. Parasio is great for people watching..but, I so much more enjoy the seclusion and peacefulness of the beaches to the south.

I usually go to San Fransisco Grocery in Tulum and buy a cheap styrofoam cooler as well as some cervesa and wine coolers, just because it is less expensive than purchasing drinks from the beachside restuarants..but, it isn't necessary..don't forget the ice.

Beach Umbrella? I don't think it is necessary, there is shade just a few steps away in front of the cabanas.

Thanks Gale for your input. We are looking forward to having a wonderful time in Tulum. Since we probably won't be renting a car, it seems that everything but the SanFancisco will be within walking distance. We will be checking out the Paraiso beach for sure, we have read lots of positive things about it. I think we will go ahead and purchase the umbrella, might come in handy when exploring all the beautiful beaches. One other question we have is, does anyone know if clothing optional is ok at Cabanas Tulum? Thanks again, can't wait to get there.:):):)

Ken-L:
San Francisco supermarket is not walking distance from Tulum beaches (abour 2 miles), but a cab from there to the beaches costs no more than $30 pesos (2.80 USD). It worths, because soft drinks, beers, ice, etc. costs less than a half in San Francisco than in bars at beach area.

Regarding nudity, it's accepted along all the Tulum beach, but sometimes you'll be the only one in the nude. Specific places like Copal and Azulik are specifically clothing optional, and ratios can be 50-50% between textile and nude. Toplessness is the norm for women at Tulum.
Gabriel.

Unless you really like to walk, I would not consider anything in Tulum Pueblo, including San Fransisco Market within walking distance of Cabanas Tulum, it is about 3km to the Beach Rd/Coba Rd intersection and another km or more to 307.

I have seen alot of people walking the Coba Rd back toward Tulum Pueblo and 307, but in the heat it would be a hot walk. There are bike paths on each side of Coba Rd, so traffic when you walk is not an issue, but, you have to be careful and mindful of traffic on the Beach Road.

I agree, better to grab a cab into town.

We will definitely take the cab into town for supplies! Much too far, and would take up too much valuable beach time to walk that far! Just can't wait to get there. Thanks to all again.

A cheap cooler at the San Fran. is the way to go. You can pick up ice and beer there while you're at it. I wouldn't bother with an umbrella myself. What i find nice is just finding a good spot near a palm tree for shade when needed. Being in Tulum is very layed back. You hang on the beach all day soaking up the sun and swimming. I find it nice that you can find yourself a somewhat private little spot. I don't know of any beach clubs. When the sun goes down you grab a cab and role into town and stroll around and hang out wherever. I love it there. We're heading there in a few weeks and we always split up out time between playa, coz, tulum, and puerto morelos. It's a nice way to do it. Cab rides I think are 30 pesos to whatever place your staying and 30 pesos back into town. That was last year. It could be a tad more now...

Cabanas Tulum had several large palm trees for plenty of shade. That was pre Wilma in June of 05. I have posted pic's of the beach at Cabanas Tulum from our room in the pic thread.:) When we were there there was maybe 10 people that walked by that beach all day, so clothing could have been optional at that time, topless definately. You will need to rent hammocks for the front deck area of your room. I think it was 4 usd a day, well worth it as we spent many hours in them:D .

Thanks for all the helpful info.:) Good tip on the hammocks! Did you use them instead of laying out on the beach? We made our choice of a place to stay based on your great pictures and report on where you stayed. By the way, don't know if you remember but we met in Playa last June at a Peep meet at the Tequila Barrel. Can't wait, this will be our first overnight stay in Tulum. Any tips on where to eat and shop in town one evening? Thanks again. Ken

Hello Ken-L. My husband and I have stayed at the Los Lirios resort 3 times and just love it. We pickup a cooler & ice at SF and stock it with beer / water saving allot of $$ and you always have a cold drink. This is perfect beach, miles (and I do mean mile) of beach to walk through out the day, wearing a small bikini or for us we prefer our thongs (smaller the better and topples). If you need a web site for thongs let me know. We saw only a few nudes on the beach, but no one walking. This has been the BEST beach for being lazy and thonging. You'll love it!!

I remember you as "KennyL"?! Hubby and I met you at the Tequila Barrel on the same night and then ran into you several times during the week. Your daughter and a friend were taking spanish lessons I think. Met your wife and your son also. When you you headed to Tulum? We'll be there March 11-15.

Hi there Sandflea, Yup thats us, we remember you and Coy from the TB meet. Will be in Tulum from March 18th to the 21st. Looks like we will miss you there. But looking at Playa calendar, it appears that we will be in Playa at the same time and place. We will also be staying at the Luna Blue for a few days during our visit. March 15th to the 17th. See ya there.:)

We tend to go thongless and everything els-less on these beaches. But what web sites do you have for thongs?
