My family and I may have the opportunity to move to Tulum for a couple years. We have three kids and while I will probably homeschool the younger ones, we are wondering if there is a good place for my 6th grader to go to school. Tulum or maybe Playa de Carmen? This is a big factor in our decision. Thanks!

There are some great schools there, actually.

We lived in Playa last winter for a short period (had to leave unexpectedly) and we home-schooled our children. However, we had friends whose children went to the school in Puerto Aventuras. It is a bi-lingual school, half day english, half day spanish. Their daughter was in grade three, and had a Spanish tutor in the beginning. I have heard from them and from others that the school is very good, with very good standards. It is not too expensive, less even than the private schools up here.

There is also Colegio Ingles in Playa, as well as a few others. Puerto Aventuras would be closer to you, though, and not such a pain to drive every day.

I can't remember the name of the school, but I'll look into it and post back here any info I come across.

PS. I'm jealous!!

Okay, I hunted down more info for you.

There is a good article in the Playa Maya news about Playa and area schools, click on the link to read it

http://www.playamayanews.com/article346.html

Colegio Puerto Aventuras runs about 3000 pesos a month, plus initial registration of 4000 pesos, and books that cost about 3500 pesos. There is also a uniform cost.

Check out that link to get some info about the other schools in Playa. I know Steve Ryberg (owner of the Playa Maya Hotel) has his kids at Papalote, the Waldorf school. It would be a bit of a drive for you everyday, but I think the Waldorf system is great.
