Hi,
It seems folks on this site know all there is to know about Tulum so I thought I'd tap into it and see if I got some help.
My partner and I are traveling to Tulum in mid-February. We have contacted many, many, many hotels/cabanas and most appear to be full or not available for the full length of our trip (at least oceanfront ones). We are now considering spending less on lodging so we can spend more on food and spa treatments. So, we are looking at Trece Lunas, which clearly gets rave reviews for its food...but not so much about its rooms.
I'm not finding a lot online, even their website is barebones, so would greatly appreciate any info about the look, conditions, pros and cons of the rooms at trece lunas.
I should also note that I'm okay with simple, and I'm ok with having to walk to the beach. I'm NOT OK with too many critters...or any for that matter. I grew up by in the Caribbean so I know mosquitos and I know ants. Those are fine. Vermin, however, is a problem.
Thanks so much!

We stayed at the Azulik last year and we walked by a couple of times. It is right across the street from the beach (can't see the beach because of the other hotel but, it is maybe a 1 min. walk) The rooms face the jungle, away from the road. Haven't tried the food yet but, that is on the list for this year in March. Good luck!

I met a couple of guys last March who were staying at Kin-Ha and then moved to Trece Lunas. They said the room was actually very nice, very nicely designed, but no view and a bit on the hot side. Still, a great price, and you're on the beach road...
Did you try Cabanas Tulum? They're on the beach and very inexpensive and they have a lot of rooms so sometimes have availability when other places do not. Not a lot of charm, though.

so, do you think that means that there are no fans in the room?
i've tried getting in touch with them but no luck yet. got one response that let me know they had availability but no answer to my other questions...
hmmm...
any other recs from folks?

First off, http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/Minniemex/Avitars/welcome.gif to the board!!
I am also a big fan of Cabanas Tulum - the rooms are clean but spartan - but the patio and beach are to die for!! You can hang two hammocks on the patio no problems!! The did have a fan mounted on the wall over the door, pointing at the beds. You are going in the winter, so I really doubt that it will be too hot at night.
There is also Los Lirios - I think DougSR stayed there - wasn't too impressed with it but, breakfast buffet is included with price and they do have air conditioning.
You mentioned that not one place has rooms for your whole stay - have you thought of just splitting it between 2 different places?? I know that I like to stay at just one place, but my last trip we split between 3 different places and it didn't work out too bad.... BR you can attest to mulitple places!

As for Trece Lunas, I've depleted my knowledge by passing along that second-hand info from those guys I met. I should have asked them if I could come up and see the room, but never got around to it.
Keep at them with the e-mails. You'll find a lot of people answer one question and nothing else, but just keep after them. Make sure your sentences are simple and clear if you think they may not be real good with the English thing.
The thing with Trece Lunas, however, is that while you're willing to walk to the beach, which beach will you be able to walk to? The beaches in that central area are pocket beaches, bordered by rocky outcroppings. You can walk down a bit further to the open beaches south of Maya Tulum, maybe even set yourselves up at the Ana y Jose Beach Club for the day (base of operations) and then just keep walking south and checking things out.
That's why I'd probably go with Cabanas Tulum. Right on the beach already, no need to "get there", ya know?
