My husband and I have been going to Mexico for several years and usually stay in Playa. This year we would like to spend our 10 days in the Tulum area. We would appreciate help in planning. We are in early 50s and in great shape. We like a lowkey beach vacation in winter to offset our other active vacations. In addition to chilling....we enjoy snorkeling and volleyball on the beach. We are interested in a small place and NOT AI. My husband wants electricity!!! No need for AC. We prefer an area where we will feel comfortable topless or nude. So, any suggestions for accomodations ...less then $100 per night, restaurants and/or activities ( we have already been to Tulum ruins, Coba and Sian Kaan)
and.... any info on Tulum pueblo...how far from beach cabanas, how to get there with no rental car and what if anything there is to do there. We are familiar with the collectivos and would go to Playa at least once.
....adn how to get from airport to cabana/hotel.

I know this is a big request...any info greatly appreciated!!!:) :) :)

Hi kayebee,

First, electricity can be found at all the cabana hotels along the beaches of Tulum, but at some it's "lights out" so to speak at 11pm. This is usually because some work with solar power, wind power, or generator.

Here are some hotel suggestions:

Ana y Jose has electricity, has been known to have a beach volleyball net. http://www.anayjose.com/

Azulik has no electricity in the rooms and has been known to have a beach volleyball net. http://www.azulik.com/

Los Lirios has elecricity and A/C volleyball net. http://www.loslirioshotel.com/

Posada Margherita has solar powered electricity, beautiful beach. http://www.posadamargherita.com/

Nueva Vida: This place does have nude beaches, and I've read that there are many people sunbathing nude, walking nude, swimming nude, etc. in the area. http://www.tulumnv.com/

Diamante K: This hotel is close to the Tulum ruins. This is the one we think we have chosen for our upcoming trip. http://www.diamantek.com/indexing.htm

Esmerelda K: Sister to the Diamonte. http://www.esmereldak.com/indexing.htm

Zamas: has a great restaurant, although I'm not particular to their beach. It's nice, just not as expansive as I prefer, and not great for volleyball, however great for snorkeling! http://www.zamas.com/

Maya Tulum: a wellness center/spa as well http://www.mayatulum.com/mayatulum/index.aspx

There are many, many more as well.

You will feel comfortable topless at ANY hotel along the beaches of tulum, and will feel comfortable nude at many of them as well.

As for activities you haven't already done, you could rent a car or hire a driver (or an excursion) to Punta Allen. You could get a cab or take an excursion to the ruins of Muyil. You could do the same to visit the cenotes, such as Cenote Escondido, which is south of Zamas, or Dos Ojos (on the highway to Playa) or Gran Cenote (on the road to Coba).

The Tulum pueblo is also a great place to be. Lots of great restuarants and shopping.

Playa is about a 40 minute collectivo ride from Tulum on the highway. Depending on where your hotel is locating along the beach road, you could walk to the highway to catch the collectivo or alternatively you can take a cab. To get to Tulum from the airport, you can arrange for transfers through www.playa.info, or you can take a cab. There is also a bus to Playa, I will look into whether it also goes to Tulum.

There is a reef about 200 meters off shore, and you can arrange for a boat snorkel tour for reasonable prices.

Hope this has helped, let me know if you have more questions!

I answered you the other day on what I knew of these two, with the exclusion of the fact that neither of these have 24hr. electricity. You would be best off for nude sunbathing in the Tulum area , but for snorkling it would be better as little North such as Tankah Bay or Akumal area. Have you tried hotelstulum.com for more lodging options and pic's???

Kaybee,

While we've never been to Tulum before, I am planning our trip for next May and it sounds like our requirements are fairly close. Hence I'll share my thought process.

We were married on Cozumel 5 years back, and last year went to Isla Mujeres and returned to Coz. We had a good time but too much running around for one week. Afterward we were more tired than relaxed. Hence I vowed for our next trip to find a place to flop and relax, and are also planning on 10 days. We want to do nothing, but also be able to be active if we so choose.

While I don't know about the Volleyball aspect of your requirement, I've decided to try Cabanas Copal (www.cabanascopal.com (http://www.cabanascopal.com)). There is another thread (http://www.tulum.info/showthread.php?t=137) on this board discussing which cabanas are best, and has a link to a map.

I'm looking forward to the massages, Eco-spa thing, but still being close enough (5K) to the ruins, and other beach areas. Since we run marathons, I think we can make the 5K to the ruins :). I suppose I'll need to make some reservations soon, and can't wait to try them out.

I hope you have a great trip as well.

Enjoy,
