So I finally got around to calling BoA to ask them about the fees at the ATMs down there. Last March I got hit by big ones and it really bugged me because I'd always used ATMs to get the best conversion rates.
They can't be specific as to locations, but said that they're affiliated with BanaMex and BanComer (and Santander Serafin and some other ones I hadn't heard of). I said, well, the ATM at BanComer last March charged me like $9 each trip.
She said that there will always be a 3% conversion fee, which stinks but I think still gives a good rate overall, but that the $5 ATM fee should not apply to me. She said if I get hit with the $5 fee, I should just contact them when I get back and they'll refund it to me.
Which I thought was interesting. Oh, and I asked about the rumored Bank of America ATM that I'd heard was in the Centro Maya mall up in PDC, she looked in her system and said she couldn't find a single actual BoA ATM in Mexico. Only affiliated banks.
Not sure if this is helpful to anyone, just thought I'd put it out there for what it's worth. I'm still going to use ATMs for my cash needs.
