If you have any info about the state of Tulum at the present time, this would be a great place to post it.
Last I heard phone service was still intact in Tulum, and that the situation had not deteriorated as much as it has in Playa and north.

There is new Video reports coming In from Cancun....I know that this is the Tulum forum but the Playa forum is jammed.....Cancun looks like a war zone. Most all of the buildings have damage.....Most of the front of the buildings are gone....People trying to carry whatever they can eat or drink.....Military trucks rolling in.....People asking when is the US army coming....They are wlaking around dazed and confused...Tourists are crying wondering how to get home....307 closed....

Mikey, do you have links to the videos?
The Playa site needs more bandwidth alotted. I don't think any of the mods have access to be able to do this.

Third hand info, but apparently electricity has been restored to Tulum and the roads are accessible.
If I hear more, I'll post.

I need to return to Playa from Campeche, heard the road from Cancun is flooded out and mostly emergency vehicles being allowed through. Has that situation improved - When you say roads to Tulum are passable do you mean south or north of Tulum - any recomendations on best route back to Playa del Carmen

This is what I have read over on the Playa board (http://www.playa.info)
I just got another phone call from Tony (Tony and Cheri from Hotel Zanzibar). He said they can see what has been posted here, but can't reply for some unknown reason.
They are still in Chichen Itza (Pista). They DID try and get to Playa today, but were turned back at Valladolid. He said that no one can pass and they were told to turn around. The toll roads to Cancun from there are closed by police, and the free roads to Coba and to Cancun are also closed. Valladolid is full of refugees who fled the storm. 307 from Tulum to Cancun is shut, they told him some places on 307 are under 6 feet of water. He has seen big truck rolling by, going toward Cancun/Playa, no doubt loaded with relief supplies. He also said that they are going to try again tomrrow to get into Playa, know that they may again be turned back...but are willing to give it a go. In true Playa fashion, he said if there is even one brick left of the Zanzibar, they will rebuild!
So I don't know what to tell you, Deb. This is from Valladolid, perhaps if you take the bottom roads, the highway 186 to Chetumal, you can get up there by that way. However I have also read that they are letting no one into Playa except military and aid workers. Might be best to wait a day.
If you DO go, probly a good idea to bring some food and fresh water for everyone there, I am sure they are running short on that.

We have contact with our manager. He traveled by car from Zahra to Tulum and the road is passable from the main highway in Tulum to our lodges on the beach.
Our staff is all well.
We have some roof damage and a few of our cabanas and villas need more repair inside due to some water damage.
Our restaurant at Copal has some damage. The restaurant at Zahra suffered very little.
The beaches are fine
We are electing to close for one week to clean up and take care of the major repairs. We will continue to update as we have more information.

We're supposed to go to Grand Xcaret resort in 3 weeks, could you tell me how's the situation there because on the web I could only find information on Playa del Carmen or Cancun. Any information will do, thanks!

Hi all,
I am writing this on behalf of a friend who is scheduled to go to this resort on Sunday and they haven't heard any updates on the status of the resort itself. Anyone know if they weathered Wilma okay? Any information would be greatly appreciated as they are going to a wedding that is scheduled for next Friday Nov.4th.
Thanks!

Cancun Aiport will probably still be closed except for evacuation flights. I read today that the line to enter the airport was over 2 km long! 35,000 tourists are trying to get out. Looks like Merida is the only way in or out at this time.

I called the resort offices in Spain because in Miami nobody answered and the line doesn't work in Xcaret. They told me that the hotel was damaged, but only the pool and beach area, but they're already cleaning everything. My family in Mexico heard that the hotel zone in all the riviera will be OK from the second half of november, but don't expect to go to downtown Cancun, that will be the last part to be cleaned up... if I find out anything else I'll let u know.

I went there twice this week. I cant be specific about properties for anyone (sorry) but it seemed like business as usual. The beach was wider at Paraiso beach club. James and I ate Carnitas on the main street for breakfast, and very nice they were too!
Another place I had lunch was the fav staple haunt Don Carfecto... There was a line as the town was very busy. Again service as ever great and good food. No one seemed overly affected by Wilma!
I was told by Abyss that they are running diving as of today!
Hope this helps somewhat,
JEZ

Thanks BoomBoom for your info.
Thanks also to you, Jez. That's great to hear about Tulum, my newest favorite place! (must say, I'm jealous that you were there twice this week... )
A WIDER beach at Paraiso??! Man, that beach was the bomb to begin with! Can't imagine it being wider. Wicked.
I just can't wait to be sackin' out on that beach again...*sigh*.

I have heard they are trying to change the density restrictions as a result of coastal changes caused by the hurricane. Does anyone have any info about this and how it will impact building restrictions and environmental permitting?
